Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

[Sam wraps his arms around the Alpha, holding him close as he finally breaks down. There's no judgement from Sam. He doesn't consider this weak. Derek needs to heal, and the best way to do that is to lay all his pain out. Sam's proud of him for doing it.

He doesn't say anything. He knows there aren't words to fix the pain. Only time can do that. But there's comfort in the way he holds him.]

[Derek can't remember the last time he's cried, at least not the last time he's cried in front of anyone. The instant he feels arms around him, he can't hold them back any longer, and he stays like that, clinging onto Sam and letting everything out for a long while. He's grateful to the hunter for giving him this moment, even if he'd otherwise try to deny he really needed it.

A while later, Derek finds the courage to look up at the other man, eyes red from crying and all, and nods thank you.]

[Sam gives the wolf a soft, sad smile, gently brushing away the last of the tears. He'd known from personal experience that Derek needed that, and he'd suspected he was the only one capable of getting him to actually do it.]

We all miss you back at the loft, but if you're not ready to come back, I'll tell them I couldn't find you.

[He'll back Derek's play on this, no matter what it is. Now that he's broken, he can truly start to heal. That's all Sam wanted for him.]

[Don't take it the wrong way. Derek can't even bear the thought of facing everyone, not like this, and so he pulls away from Sam's comforting embrace in favor of going to kneel near a corner. His back is turned, though, it's not to dismiss...he just can't do it.]

I'm not ready to go back, yet. I still need time to think.

[He can't deal with more than one person looking at and treating him like he's something so fragile that he'd shatter at the slightest breeze.]

Alright. You have my number. Call me if you need anything.

[And he does mean anything. He turns to go, not wanting to overstay his welcome. He'd already pushed Derek past his limits today. There's no need to press him any more than that. Of course, if the wolf asked him to stay, Sam wouldn't leave. But the hunter is leaving it up to Derek.]

[Derek shuts his eyes at those words, knowing what they meant and what was to follow. He turns again, sits back against the wall to look at Sam, brows creasing gently with parted lips as if to say something. Nothing comes, not until Sam's walking away and the alpha sounds desperate to make him stop.]

Sam. Don't leave me. Please.

[He may not have been totally prepared for the others just yet, but Sam was different. He needed him.]

[Sam turns back to the wolf, part of him immensely relieved that Derek didn't want him to go. He didn't feel right leaving him alone, but he'd been willing to do it if that's what he needed.

Crossing the room, Sam kneels beside Derek, a gentle hand on his shoulder.]

I'll stay as long as you need me to.

[It's a promise, and one Sam intends to keep. He can text Dean later and explain.]

[All Derek can do is nod as he stares across the distillery. He knew Sam would do anything he needed and vice versa and right now what he needed was support, someone to trust. Who better for the role than Sam? Derek reaches up to take the hunter's hand in his own.]

Thanks.

[He squeezes gently then looks down again with a soft sigh.]

I just need someone here to keep me from doing something stupid. I want to kill them for what they did, but I'm just not powerful enough to do it.

[Admitting to his weakness and inability to avenge his fallen pack members hurts more than anything.]

We're going to make them pay, Derek. That much I can promise you. They aren't going to get away with any of the things they've done. But we have to be smart about it, okay? We have to find a way to make sure we've got the upper hand before we try anything. We've lost enough. We're not going to make it worse by being reckless.

[Sam doesn't know how comforting his words are, as they bring no instant relief to the pain. To the immeasurable anger simmering in all of them. But the hunter isn't going to stop until he's found a way to take revenge on the Alphas that had taken so much from his pack.]

I highly doubt playing smart is going to change anything.

[His words are comforting enough, though, they're just not enough to inspire any real confidence, but that could mostly be because Derek's incredibly hard on himself to begin with. There's so much to do and it seems like every time they take a step forward it winds up placing them ten steps back. He feels irrevocably hopeless fighting two losing battles; the Alpha pack and they're still no close to solving the darach problem.]

Maybe not. But playing stupid will get someone killed. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to lose anyone else. Least of all you.

[And despite the harm they'd done to Derek's pack, the Alphas were clearly after Derek himself. Sam can't even bear to think about what would happen when they finally decided that recruiting him was pointless. He's afraid Deucalion's desire for expanding his pack is the only reason Derek is still alive.]

[He can't help but throw Sam a scowling look, taking that remark as insinuation that Derek had been playing stupid before now. He rolls his eyes and shifts against the wall with a huff knowing that Sam had a point, he always did. And yeah, Derek's still fortunate the hunter was on their side and not another.]

You're not and you won't. When we rejoin the others - when I'm ready to - we'll come up with a plan...change our routine. I promise.

Take all the time you need, Derek. Just remember that there's nothing you have to face alone. You've got your pack, your friends, and you've got me.

[Sam settles in more comfortably beside the wolf, back pressed against the walls. He'll sit here as long as he needs to; as long as Derek asks him to. There's nowhere more important for him to be than right here.]

I don't have that kind of time. We can leave when night falls...

[At least then he'll be able to avoid most of the others, hoping they'd all be in bed for school the next day. When Sam settles beside him, Derek can't help but to lean against him slightly.]

Alright. If you need me to leave, just say the word.

[He'll understand if Derek wants some time to himself, but until the Alpha sends him away, he isn't going anywhere.]
