[All the world looks like his island, now. It's all James can think these days. All the world looks like his island, and there's no radio, no help on the way, no rescue. This is the way of things now.

So many people are just gone. There are no zombies, it was nothing so absurd as that. James couldn't have tolerated that. No; no outbreak of the dead rising. There was simply an illness, a virus that they discovered was an act of terrorism that spiraled out of the terrorists' control. Best guess had placed its origin in North Korea, but that was so long ago. Its origin didn't matter anymore.

The last reports they'd heard said that two thirds of the world's population was dead. Bond wouldn't be surprised if they were up to three quarters.

Some said it was darwinism at work; they'd discovered immunity early on. It hadn't done a bloody thing, and hundreds if not thousands of immune volunteers had died trying. James hadn't volunteered.

He'd done what he could, but ultimately that had amounted to nothing. He was meant to be first line against terrorist attacks on the Realm, but they hadn't seen it coming. No one had.

Tanner had been one of the first to catch the virus and succumb. It was strange; Bond had never realized how necessary, how pivotal Bill was until he wasn't there anymore. Q was next, and by the time he'd fallen, most of the world had been in chaos. MI6 was in chaos. Everything crumpled not long after; impossible to uphold government when most of most of the governing body spends two weeks in a slow, disintegrating death.

In the end, through harrowing trips abroad and frantic runs back, he'd found Mallory and Moneypenny still alive. No one else.

For half a year, they wandered the country; James would like to say they did what they could, but that's a lie. There was nothing to do. Sometimes they buried bodies, cleared roads. Sometimes they just kept moving, making food stores here, there. They stopped seeing other survivors. If not for the occasional radio wave, James would have through the three of them were the last alive.

Then Mallory was shot, proving quiet effectively that the country was not as empty as they'd thought.

It had been like watching a slow motion reel: his skills hadn't died in the apocalypse, he'd heard the noise, stopped in their constant forward march, turned; he saved Mallory from a quick death, at least, by pulling him hard to the ground. That was his talent and his curse, saving Ms from quick deaths and condemning them to slow ones. His heart had beat on his tongue as he executed every last man that had come after them. Some were young, maybe still teenagers. They still hit the ground with bullets clustered in center mass.

They had tried to struggle on, after that. The plan had been to find a car that still ran, to get him to an hospital and do what they can. In the end, though, he had a punctured lung. He died trying to tell them to carry on, Bond was sure, but it felt like he was being blamed.

He still dreams about it sometimes.

Difficult not to, the parallels are all there. Silva's island, M's death; now London looks the same, and Mallory's blood on his hands. He doesn't talk much anymore, not that he was ever particularly chatty. He stills holds her close at night, but not so close as his gun. He still smiles at her, on occasion, still kisses her and looks out for her with an almost obsessive quality, but he's been in the process of checking out for a long time, now. Immune he may be, but the emptiness has eaten away at his mind as surely as the virus would have.]

[ SHIELD was the first one to hear about the thread via a handful of operatives they had in North Korea. Things got too hot before SHIELD could even put their plan into motion. The Avengers weren't going to avert a nuclear war. Some would even argue that Tony Stark made things worse, but not even his big mouth could cause a war. They braced for impact and hoped the fallout would be easy to contend with. Clint was halfway across the world when he got the call that SHIELD was going dark for good. An all points bulletin to get home however you could and pray you had a job to come back to. They weren't a religious organization by nature, dammit if God didn't become the most talked about subject when your life was flashing before your eyes.

It took Clint six months to get to England with all the wreckage. Walking was your main form of transport until you got to the coast and then you begged for a lift across the ocean. He hadn't had the joy of experiencing it just yet, but he was ready for it. He could take care of himself and he was plenty certain those assholes running cargo ships didn't have that much training. Least that's what he was hoping. He could be completely and totally wrong and wind up getting his ass kicked. That did happen a lot.

Gretel was--a bump in the road? A flaw. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but meeting her was not planned. Attachments could make you vulnerable out here. He was lucky enough that he was on a solo op when the world went down the shitter. He couldn't wrap his head around how things might be different if Natasha was with him. She could take care of herself, but people used connections like that against people like him. It pissed him off that they could manipulate him so freely, but that was the price he paid for having friends now.

It's been a month and he's still stuck in the heart of London or at least what used to be London. It's all rubble and shanty towns. Sometimes you run into assholes who want more than their fill and Clint is more than happy to put them down with the supplies he has on him. Putting an arrow between the eyes is Clint's specialty these days. He doesn't hesitate to fire if things look even remotely suspicious. Now is not the time to sympathize.

The building they're in is barely a building. The top half of it is blown to hell. The bottom half is probably not structurally sound, but it's keeping the rain off them. That's enough for Clint. It's moments like these where he feels uneasy. Sometimes the way she looks at him makes him uneasy. He's not sure what he sees when she looks Clint Barton in the eyes and he doesn't care. ] You can always put on a pretty little dress and get us passage.
