( 'by the sea' is less a concept than a constant reality in her world. the sea is never far away, after all, and having escaped the country house at midnight to go wander by the beach, she finds it closer than ever. that she would not be alone is another matter, unexpected but welcome, and she looks at the stranger, then out across the still waves, then - lastly - up at the moon, full and huge, lighting everything up like some pale imitation of day.

although it feels like sacrilege, disturbing such a silence, she speaks regardless, saying, )
