[ this universe isn't supposed to exist. it's not part of what the tva would call the sacred timeline, it's what the spider society calls anomalous.

(miguel would call it a fucking mess, but steve doesn't like miguel much, so his opinion is irrelevant.)

steve wasn't given any details when he was sent to this universe. just miguel distractedly telling him to "fix the problem, your watch will tell you where it is. we're watching you." and then shoving him through the dimensional portal before steve could ask any questions or clarify how very much he does not work for the society, not like bucky does. they're not even spider people, they assist, they're freelancers, steve is not going to be ordered around by an overgrown arachnid—

anyway. point is. this universe isn't supposed to exist, and steve wasn't told why, but his watch has led him here, to cliffs overlooking an endless sea, and a girl who sends his watch into a flurry of angry pinging.

he didn't know she was just a girl, at first. he came in a little guns blazing, and that was a mistake, because now that he knows what the problem is (wrong gender, born wrong, complete timeline reset) he's not inclined to carry out the spider society's dirty work... but he has to earn the trust of someone he just punched very hard in the face.

(They didn't always get guests like this. Not normally. Someone from Jarilo, well, another person given he had been kept in the loop on the other guy. Gallagher didn't greet people in most situations, not like this given she's far from the type of person he would be removing. Or in some ways, far from his usual he's serving behind the bar once they started getting to know one another. That didn't stop them it seems like despite their respective ages from perhaps indulging though that didn't stray too far just yet, small moments of testing the waters with a degree of hesitancy on the bodyguards part.

Mostly from a thought or two that he could be barking up the wrong tree here until he started to notice Natasha was not someone to worry about. Not in the way it could hurt him. Meeting kind souls in a place like this is few and far between no matter where they come from; he's seen far too many get chewed up and spat out in comparison even as some nights together feel comforting to a degree.

Better than the times he spent drinking alone after his roughest days aside from him noting she started a habit of her own. To touch along the scars on him, the glow of them on occasion from his arms to his back, or even the ones along his front on his chest and other places. He hasn't stopped her from that and from whatever curiosity she has on them no matter his silence.

Instead, like now, he sits there with one of his rough hands upon her much smaller one. It's hard to resist truly. A comforting touch is something else he isn't that used to in the way she does it, but who is he to complain about this kindhearted woman? Even if some of his habits leave much to be desired.)
