Defrosting
![]() On occasion, the fun in playing a romantic relationship is not actually playing the relationship proper, but the build up. The characters grow closer, frozen hearts can thaw, emotional barriers may fall, and insight is gained, both about self and potential partners... ...plus, it can be entertaining as all heck to play either a. awkward dancing around the subject, if your character is that type, or b. embracing all that warming up. A little of column A, a little of column B may scratch an itch you never knew you had. Play one little vignette in time. You may find yourself craving some more.

Hi, he’s the problem.
How long has it been, now, that Hiei has spent circling between demon and human worlds, now? He’s almost lost count by now of how many times he’s come back to the human world to spend time in the fox’s home, now at least a bit more private than sneaking in via the window at his mother’s home. The fire apparition may once have said that he would never spend much time here, but ..
That was before Kurama had done such an expert job at sneaking past his carefully built walls. With many years of patience exerted against him, Hiei had eventually caved and allowed the fox in. From time to time he catches himself wondering what the hell he did to attract this kind of attention, but in the end always finds himself simply allowing and enjoying it.
Who knew what their futures held, after all.
The little fire demon stands outside a hotel, now, hands tucked in to the pockets of his pants, a surly slouch taking over his posture. The fox was at a ‘work conference’ as he called it, away from the town the little demon usually haunted, but of course not far enough to escape Hiei for a visit. Kurama wouldn’t be hard to spot in a crowd with his vibrant hair, nor would Hiei in an obnoxiously colored and too large windbreaker that is a bit too light for the weather if it was on anyone but the fire apparition.
Waiting around wasn’t exactly his strong suit, but for Kurama .. he’ll just scowl and test his limits.

Years, and his hard work was finally paying off in the little ways that Hiei showed his interest in more open and honest ways than could have been previously predicted. Of course, he was still Hiei, but the fox rarely struggled to understand the things he never quite said out loud, even when others did. While the fire apparition may never understand him, or his motives in giving all of his attention in this way, Kurama had never really expected him to. They'd always been so very different, after all.
Most of the people entering the hotel at this hour were coming back from the very event he'd attended or one like it. A sea of muted colors and well tailored suits or dress slacks with Hiei in a windbreaker at the center of the orderly chaos.
As if he'd arrived at the wrong place entirely.
Kurama stops short several meters away, staring as if he's not sure he didn't imagine the fire apparition's presence there. Recovering after a moment, the smile is reflexive as he closes the distance between them, taking in the whole image of the oversized colorful windbreaker, only speaking once he was certain not to broadcast the conversation for others to hear.
“Hiei, what a pleasant surprise.”
While it was possible the smaller demon had arrived with some pressing news, it seemed far more likely he would have done so in his typical cloak rather than dress in colorful human clothing. It's easy enough to assume he'll be promptly corrected if that were actually the case, at least.

As much as the fire apparition may complain about having to go back and forth between the Makai and human world so often.. being here with Kurama was a little bit of peace for him. A quiet moment for his mind where he could actually rest without having to keep at least one of his three eyes open for someone looking for trouble. The fox demon's gentle affection may have taken him a little while to get used to, but now that Hiei has felt it, he finds himself pining, from time to time.
It's still ridiculous to him to think about, sitting in his chamber in Mukuro's compound lamenting that his clothing has lost Kurama's smell, and how it was more comfortable to nap tucked in against his redheaded companion. And yet it happened with a certain enough regularity that found him here in this sea of muted colors waiting for Kurama.
The sea of muted suits make it easy to spot out the fox - his bright red hair sets him apart easily from others, though Hiei simply watches Kurama approach with no outward sign of his affection or relief that he's finally arrived and he no longer has to exercise his small shot at patience.
"Kurama." Hiei's tone is fond, at least, though to others there may not be much distinction. "Do you have anything else to do?"
He hopes not, or at the very least that he can go to the room and nap if he does.

The benefits were, of course, mutual. Whether he spoke of it or not, the redhead was also calmed by the fire apparition's presence. The familiar scent was a comfort and now especially, he appreciated whatever length of time he wouldn't be spending alone in an unfamiliar hotel room during this trip.
Kurama, who has been reading between Hiei's lines since before their first assignment with Yusuke all those years ago, notes the fondness in his tone - and every little miniscule hint offered for interpretation - the fire apparition's sharp edges slowly eroding over the years like sea glass. That small smile never wavers, as if at some secret joke only he knows the punchline of. After all, he knew how much of a fish out of water Hiei was just by being there to see him, such a small gesture that meant so much more to him than the fire apparition would ever really understand.
“Nothing pressing,” He ushers the demon into the hotel lobby as he speaks, directing them to the elevators, swiping his key card practicality without looking, elaborating casually. “Some paperwork that can wait, dinner eventually.” They'd been provided lunch, at least.

Hiei hadn’t really put too much effort in to expressing that he was listening when Kurama was discussing this particular business trip. He hadn’t, after all, intended to be here for this little trip. But things had fallen in to place, and the fire apparition had decided it would be worth the time to travel out to see his partner.
.. Beyond that, he’d also been given something that he thought the fox may enjoy.
How follows along as Kurama ushers him in and to the elevators, red eyes occasionally slipping to observe the other drably dressed salarymen around them also waiting for an elevator to their floor and room. Little things like this Hiei had eventually gotten used to, though he still found himself feeling absolutely alien among them all.
“Dinner with the other people here?” Essentially Hiei is asking if he will have to figure out a dinner for himself, in that, head tipping slightly as the elevator dings that their ride has arrived.
Hiei waits to shuffle on with the others riding with them, sticking close to his companion, nearly pressing to his side in an attempt to give himself as much space as possible in such a small area.

The fire apparition sticks out almost obscenely in his wildly colored windbreaker, a detail the fox can't help but find both amusing and slightly concerning - attracting human attention was still far outside of Hiei's comfort, after all.
His head tilts in surprise at the question, boarding the elevator before responding. The smile is once again automatic as Hiei presses closer, his typical mix of fond amusement. For the most part, seemingly oblivious to the fact that they aren't alone as everyone puts in for their respective floors.
“I was thinking of calling it up to the room. I'll be free for the rest of the evening, actually.”

Hiei thought he might be blending in, wearing something more colorful. How often does he hear that he ought to try more color in his wardrobe, particularly from the man on the elevator with him? It seems that this attempt had somewhat backfired if a few side-eyed glances from the others on board are anything to go off of. Hiei, for his part, does not seem to notice, his attention focused on the redhead he had come here for in the first place.
Thankfully, the fire apparition has gotten used to that look of fond amusement on Kurama's face, and doesn't really think much of it. Instead he's bolstered at the idea that there isn't a business dinner to be had, and they could instead eat in Kurama's room. Or at least, that's what he is pretty sure is being offered at the moment.
"Mn. Then dinner in the room." Hiei is content at least that he will not have to endure another crowd to eat, at least, and is bolstered by the idea even. They arrive at Kurama's floor without further incident, Hiei's hands still stuffed in his pants pockets as he follows his partner to his room for the night. Once they are in and the door is shut behind them Hiei pauses, reaching for the other's jacket to tug at him, the request no more elaborate than a quiet request of his name.
"Kurama.."

Attracting this kind of attention was likely not going to do his reputation any favors, but by now his mother seemed to accept his disinterest in relationships in general, and the odd company he kept, so he wasn't very concerned, at least. Once inside, Kurama's first priority would be to put on something more comfortable, but the tug at his jacket stops him in his tracks, green eyes turning to Hiei curiously.
“Hm..? Should I order food before getting changed?” He did seem particularly interested in dinner, before they arrived, and it wasn't as though asking for affection was going to be the fox's first assumption at this stage of things.

There would have been a time when Hiei would have disbelieved anyone telling him that he would one day have a (small) wardrobe in the human world. Perhaps there would be less disbelief that it would be stored with Kurama, considering how deeply ingrained his partner is, there. Even more now that he's met Shiori and others, slowly, and with much coaching on the proper ways to behave around them. Enough that he's been emboldened to show up in Kurama's hotel on a business trip as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
Kurama asking if he should order the food first isn't far off the normal mark. The fire demon is typically always some level of hungry, depending on what he's been doing in the day. This time, though, the guess is incorrect, and Hiei's little frown reflects it.
How to ask for what he wants, however, is the mystery of the moment.
With Kurama turned toward him he is offered another handle, and so Hiei reaches up, tugging the fox down as the fire demon's face tips up to (hopefully) meet Kurama in the middle.
