Daemons

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (see: The Golden Compass Movie, His Dark Materials on HBO, the books), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).
Basic Daemon Facts:
- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.
- If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
How it works:
Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a top-level, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

One side-effect of having limited opportunities to interact with all but a small handful of people is that Boba doesn't get to see many daemons. And certainly, the huge feline sitting beside Maedhros is one of the most imposing he's ever seen.
"That's your daemon? What is she?"
The boy's own daemon is tiny in comparison: a small, sharp-eyed bird perched lightly on his shoulder. She, too, watches the tiger, her head cocked inquisitively to the side.
no subject
He gives both the Boba and his daemon a small smile, grateful that they both seem more curious than frightened by his own companion. It get's tiring after a while to always have people shying away at the sight of her. Neither of them, after all, is in the habit of striking without provocation.
no subject
He sounds faintly envious. His father rarely lets him train with Senaar, his own daemon. 'We can focus on her when she's settled,' he tells Boba. 'For now, you need to know how to fight without anyone's help—not even hers.'
Boba knows his father has good reason for the rule. After all, there's no guarantee that Senaar will settle as something that can fight. But it seems a bit of a shame to him, not to be able to fight at her side while she's still capable of being anything.
Spurred on by the boy's thoughts, the little bird descends from his shoulder with a flash of white-banded wings and lands a respectful distance from the other daemon. Her gray head turns this way and that as she studies the other's form—and then, her body ripples and morphs, her tiny, feather-light body transforming all at once into a mirror image of Hendunárie herself, albeit somewhat smaller.
With that, she returns to Boba, lifting a large, furred paw up to him so he can inspect her new claws. Boba grins. "You should show Dad," he tells her. "Then maybe he'd let you train with us."
no subject
Hendunárie makes a pleased sound at the praise, flexing her massive paws to show just why people don't mess with her.
She bears the scrutiny of Senaar with the patience of one used to curious youngsters, and chuffs with fond amusement at the mimicry. A feline of some kind would suit the boy, both she and Maedhros thinks, once his daemon settles.
"It would help to burn of some of that boundless energy of youth," he says with a smile. "No young creature likes to sit still for too long, wether they be child or daemon."
no subject
My dad says that until she's settled, Senaar just needs to learn to stay out of the way in a fight. But his daemon's a snake and Zam's is a fox, so that makes sense for them. What if Senaar settles as a... as a tiger or something? She'll be able to do a lot more than just stay out of the way.
[ Boba knows better than to voice his complaints to his father—he'd just give Boba a look and the conversation would be over. Which is why he's now telling them to Maedhros, instead. ]
Did you and— [ A pause as he attempts to recollect the syllables, ] —Hendunárie get to train together before she was settled?
no subject
Still... there are ways for her to train and still keep from getting in the way. If she does settle as something as large as a tiger it is better for her to have a sense of her own strenght before that, or she might end up causing harm she doesn't mean.
[It had been... an adjustment for him and Hendunárie when she'd settled. Large predators was not a common form for an elf's daemon to take.]
In a way. I grew up in very peaceful lands, not many trained with weapons for anything but ceremonial purposes. Father did insist I train more seriously, though, and Hendunárie with me as well. So that moving as one became instinct... and learning how to reach out with our minds to one another.

· Come on, she already looks like she's wearing a suit.
She's generally friendly, but also usually more sad and prone to anger than Sanji. Â More emotional and protective over their friends as well. Chances are she will try to preen or cuddle with the other daemons of the people Sanji likes, even if he's not admitting to liking them).]

SecUnit did not have a daemon of its own. At least not now. It did once but the fact that it did not marked it out as not being a human despite it wearing human clothes and otherwise looking like a human male. It was only underneath those clothes that it had very machine-looking parts on it's chest arms and feet that would give it away.
Right now it kept a careful watch on the bird. ]
Is that your pet, or your guardian?
no subject
Neither. [ Sora is the first to answer, the black feathers of her head fanning out in offense. Sanji is quick to send her some feelings of reassurance to calm her down before he addresses SecUnit with more patience. ]
As the lady said, neither. She's my daemon, the personification of my soul. Most humans have them, but not all species that have souls have visible daemons.
no subject
Well, that is a new one on me. I guess that's why I don't have a daemon since I am not a human.
no subject
Sora tilted her head at an angle to look at the other man, curiosity in her eyes, but otherwise, she didn't speak again. ]
It's possible that's the reason. Given your, eh, line of work, it might be for the better not to have a visible soul.
no subject
[ SecUnit was still keeping an eye on the bird. ]
So does it do anything other than keep venomous snakes away from you?
no subject
She doesn't need to do anything but exist, it's my soul. But...she brings me plenty of comfort, if you must know.
[ Sora, press herself against Sanji's side as if to prove that point and he gently runs a hand down the back of her head. ]
no subject
[ Keeping any kind of pet would be a bad tactical idea, but it would be lying if it didn't admit that having the kind of companionship that was between Sanji and the bird would be nice. ]
So she is basically like a glorified pet?
[ Yeah that was probably offensive but it was pretty sure that it could take her in actual combat. ]
no subject
Sora is once again puffing up in annoyance at the pet comparison. Sanji just shakes his head, much better-tempered, and smiles. ]
Do you realize that by insulting her, you're insulting my very essence too? [ Sanji says it with a smile on his face and a silky tone that drips menace. He's not really mad, the tone is still playful, but Sanji won't let a lady be disrespected in front of him, and that extends to his own daemon.
The secretary bird titls her head after that, looking at SecUnit, and if birds had the ability to smirk, it wouldn't be difficult to see that this one is doing just that. ]
I bet he's just defensive because he know we can take him in a fight.
[ Yeah she went there! ]
no subject
It is less an insult than an actual question. You just stroked it as though it were a pet. I've seen humans keep animals as pets before and I will be honest that this doesn't look very different.
[ Hell, it had seen humans keep the simpler childlike bots as pets. Pets that could lift heavy things for them, though. ]
no subject
It was only a way to show affection and closeness. While it might look similar to having a pet, the reality is very different. Animals are their own individuals, Sora is an extension of my being. She also has her own personality, in a way, but it's a reflection of my psyche. She was there the day I was born, and she will disappear once I die. I don't need to earn her favor or love, as one would with an animal.Â
[ The chef makes a face after that, his expression turning sadder for a moment. ]
Some humans do not always get along with their daemons, though. Some argue, get violent, or even get bitten. It can happen when a human hates himself.
no subject
:Maybe that's why we get severed from any possible daemons we might have had. The risk of having a target that is for us but outside of us and the danger that a SecUnit and their daemons might get violent."
no subject
Maybe. It's still an awful thing to do to anyone, I'm sorry.
no subject
I don't remember ever having one so I can't compare if my time before I was severed is any different.
[ Routine memory wipes would also account for the fact that it couldn't remember ever having a daemon. Is it any wonder that it hacked its own Governor module and wasn't subject to its Bond company? ]
no subject
Hm, well, you don't act like those who have been forcefully severed from their daemon. Those who have been untethered can become nearly catatonic, they lose all creativity and ambition and often find an early death.Â
[ No one can't forget a pain like the one experienced when their daemon is far away from them and separated, even if they were really young when it happened. ]
We shouldn't assume the worst. Perhaps you still have a soul, it's simply not visible.
no subject
[ It shrugged a bit. Indifferent to the idea. ]
The whole idea of souls is a bit too religious sounding to be something that I would care about. Whether I have one inside me or I don't have one at all it doesn't impact the way that I function.
no subject
Then maybe things should change. Have you ever considered becoming a pirate?Â
[ Sanji knows it's not easy to simply step away from problems when they are created by the system itself, but he has to make the offer. ]
I see, makes sense. This is what I have always known, so it comes naturally to me and Sora.
no subject
[ It made a face at that. ]
I really don't like the idea of being a fucking parasite for as long as I run. It has taken a long time for me to figure out what it is that I do want, and that's not it.
[ Now it would contract itself out as a security consultant. But unlike before it wasn't allowing itself to ever be slave labor again. Now it made its own choices about who to work with, had no problem at all telling the humans that it worked with that they were being stupid and would be paid in a hard currency card at the end of the contract. ]
You seemed like a smarter human to me, why did you call for something so dumb?
no subject
Pirates are all about freedom. We helped people accomplish it before. [ Sora chirps in agreement, the feathers of the back of her neck fanning, this time in a proud way.
Sure, there are asshole pirates out there, like Arlong and Buggy who are all about living selfishly and causing harm, but the Strawhats are nothing like that. ]
It's good to hear you know so well what you want or don't want to be. Also, that is quite the talent—both praising and insulting someone all in one line.
no subject
It had less of a disgusted expression now. ]
Well, that's better at least. Though, no offense, but that all sounds kind of vague. What does a pirate do?
[ And does the pirate thing mean that you are mostly on a planet? ]
no subject
Currently, we're heading to the Grand Line, it's an ocean that wraps around the entire world, and we're looking for the One Piece. Ever heard of it? Is the name given to the treasure gained by the most famous pirate who ever liked, Gol D. Roger. It's hidden somewhere at the end of the world, and we're going to find it. We're just having fun along the way, too.
[ And they might occasionally topple evil governments and liberate whole countries while they are at it. No big deal. ]
no subject
[ It had a pretty limited experience of boats, having only been on a boat twice. But neither one was too terrible, even if it did get shot once. Yes, getting shot was so common an occurrence that it ranked that about the level of 'a neutral experience'.
Actually finding humans that wouldn't either be awful to it or treat it with as much indifference as you would treat an appliance, was novel enough to be remarked on. ]
I am also pretty sure that planets don't have an 'end' since they are round. Unless that is just a turn of phrase?
[ A metaphor? Did that mean it was a metaphor? The educational modules that SecUnits got were such trash. ]
no subject
[ Sanji, like any pirate, likes adventure. He doesn't enjoy unexpected problems, and he's aware of the dangers that come with traveling, but life is worth living this way.
SecUnit, my man, getting shot at should never be considered 'a neutral experience'. ]
It's just a way of speaking, yes. [ Even if SecUnit meant to say 'metaphor' Sanji understood him. ] I meant that the One Piece is a treasure that's really hard to find. It's hidden in a secret location along the Grand Line and the magnetic fields surrounding that area of the world make navigating it tricky. You could end up lost in the middle of the sea or stuck easily, and then get attacked by Sea Kings.
no subject
Wait, what are Sea King's?
no subject
Sea kings are huge, carnivorous monsters that live in all oceans, but especially in the Calm Belts. It's their natural breeding ground, you don't want to end there. Sea Kings can be bigger than whole mountains.
no subject
Sea Kings sound like the types of dangerous fauna that are on many different planets. They would probably have a weak area open to attack. And if not you could always make a sizable hole with a big enough projectile weapon.
[ It frowned as it looked at Sora. ]
Then again having such an open weak point where someone could attack your daemon and end up hurting you screws up any of those plans.
no subject
The concept of traveling to other planets is still new for Sanji and Sora, and both look at SecUnit with curiosity after that answer. ]
Do they? What's the weirdest kind of creature you've seen out there? And can most of them be eaten? We can just eat sea kings, their meat has a lot of flavor.
[ The secretary bird ruffled her feathers once she noticed SecUnit staring, but it was in a casual, shrugging way. ]
We're strong, fast. We've been fighting for survival since we were little, we're not so easy to defeat.
[ Briefly, Sanji makes a face, his lips a thin line, as if he is concerned that Sora is oversharing about their past. He quickly scolds his expression with a charming smile, looking back at SecUnit. ]
Why, is that concern what I hear? How sweet of you.
no subject
The weirdest one that I've ever seen was this weird gelatinous creature. It looked kind of like a jellyfish that was the size of a hopper that could seat twelve, but it could walk around with these equally gelatinous arms. It also left a sticky trail behind it whenever it moved. Like really sticky. Like I'm pretty sure that was part of its hunting tactic since whatever got caught in the slime trail it would basically be surrounded by the rest of the body and digested while it was still alive.
[ SecUnit made a face. ]
I don't think that anyone would want to eat it even if it was edible. I don't have a human gastric system but I still felt like something would have come out of it if I did just from watching that. And I am not a fan of any humans getting hurt.
[ But that was especially true for the few humans that it had become attached to ]
no subject
How interesting... I do like seafood, and that doesn't sound that different. Of course, being an alien creature, there's no telling how it tastes until you try it. That creature also sounds like it shares some traits with a common snail. Eating them is a delicacy in some places.Â
[ No matter how weird or unpleasant something looks, Sanj will always consider its nutritional value. He almost starved to death once, and since he lost any pikiness he could have had about food.
Still, seeing SecUnit make that face was kind of funny. ]
You'd be surprised at the things one is willing to do when starving to death is a very real possibility. Plus, I'm sure I could make it look appetizing if I cooked that creature. [ If anything, Sanji had faith in his presentation skills. ] It's nice of you to care, though. Do you never eat anything? not even for fun or to experience the taste?Â

In most cases, a sharp-eyed observer can spot her simply by looking up. There, from any sufficiently-concealed ledge or perch, one might spot a bobcat's pale green eyes staring back at them, tense and watchful.
Perhaps that might explain her name... ]

Not that it's needed most of the time. Their size is usualy enough of an intimidation factor to keep them safe.]
Well met, friend, I hope we are not intruding.

[ It is strange to see the man again after so long. Perhaps the passage of time is not quite as straightforward in this place as it is in Fett point of origin, but that hasn't shortened any of the intervening decades, not to him. Were it anyone else, Fett might not have even remembered the man at all. Yet Maedhros had indeed been distinctive enough to leave an impression—and so had his daemon.
Fett doesn't remember her name now, only that it had been long and difficult for him to pronounce as a boy. But there's no forgetting her form—that massive, feline shape simply called a tiger. He watches her now, no more afraid than he had been as a boy, though for very different reasons. As a child, it had been simple naivete that made him fearless. Now, it is the hard-won assurance that he could defend himself if it were needed.
Not that he's particularly expecting any such need. Senaar doesn't relax—she never does completely—but her bearing changes just slightly. No longer is she lying in wait. Now, she is simply watching. ]
Maedhros. It's been a long time.
[ He wonders if the man remembers him—or rather, if he recognizes him. He and Senaar have changed much since last they met... ]
no subject
Hendunárie inclines her head in a show of respect for his fearlessness in her prescence, she does prefer people that does not shy away from the sight of her.]
That it has, last I saw you you were much shorter. I hope life has treated you well since then, Boba.
[Hopes but does not count on it. He's lived long enough to know life is rarely kind to anyone.]
I'm glad to see you again regardless. It is a rare thing to meet old friends nowadays.
no subject
He doesn't really know how to respond to "old friend." So he doesn't. ]
Wasn't sure you'd recognize me. Though the years don't seem to have changed you at all...
[ Above them, Senaar leaps to a new, more readily visible vantage point—letting herself be seen, acknowledged, and yet still not surrendering the high ground. She's not the bold little bird brazenly alighting before a tiger anymore. Now, she is remote and ever-vigilant, always seeking out an advantage. ]
no subject
It is simply in his nature to act thusly. Fett had never done him wrong before and the boy he had been had only ever been as curious and kind as any other child. That made him a friend in the lef's eyes.]
It took me a moment, I'll admit, you have changed more than a little since last we spoke. But my people's memories are long, we do not truly forget anything. [Both a blessing and a curse that.] Simply the nature of us elves, that. Time does not touch us the way it does other races.
[Hendunárie takes a moment to look her over once she's made it clear she doesn't mind being acknowledged. With a slow blink the tiger nods in approval. It is always a bit sad when the innocence of youth is left behind, but it is a sensible way to be she thinks. Especially if one lives a harsh life.]
