[ everyone tells aventurine he is lucky. instead of ending up sold into a life of hard labor, he gets something else: cleaned up nicely, expensive clothes, a wedding. if he is really lucky, they say, his spouse will largely leave him alone; he will be afforded a relative life of luxury in comparison to others of his kind, living in a nice place, clean clothes, never hungry. and yes, he agrees that it is by far the best outcome of a life of slavery, but that’s just it; a forced marriage is still a chain around one’s neck, definitely not the ideal he wants to strive for.

but it’s fine. he can spin this to his advantage, he thinks. he knows little about his husband-to-be, but does that matter? the reason aventurine is here in the first place is because he knows how to act. how to become what other people want. if he needs to put on a performance to reach his goal, so be it. all he needw to do is last until after the wedding, when things are official. if he is lucky, he’ll just need to satisfy his spouse when needed, and then he will be left on his own.

that’s how this will go. the man he is mean to marry — veritas ratio - is described as someone who has everything. what use he might have of aventurine is anyone’s guess, but a gift horse must not be looked in the mouth, isn’t that right?

yes, everyone says aventurine is lucky indeed. a man from a good family, with a decent temperament. money. status. it’s all he could ask for… other than simply not being promised to a stranger at all. ]

( veritas ratio is not a man who wants for much. he also is not a man who has ever considered taking a spouse. why would he? it’s just a distraction from his own pursuits of knowledge and seeing the various planets. what purpose would a spouse serve beyond the basic and obvious physical ones?

it’s been on his mind for awhile. even after the ipc presented to him on paper who his spouse would be: an easy on the eyes slave who would listen to veritas. the tradition of gifting slaves to higher ranking officials in the ipc was archaic at best and deeply problematic at worst. veritas had insisted he did not need the promotion “bonus”, but he would be the only one to have ever rejected such a proposal in centuries, so.

no need to rock the boat, they say.

veritas is curious who the man will be. it’s no secret veritas ratio has no interest in women, after all. still, only seeing the man on the day of the wedding? how terribly cliché.

no matter. this will be over soon.

the venue is a lovely little winery on a pleasure-seeking planet and veritas has been told he has the entire villa for a week to spend with his new spouse. )

[ aventurine was not allowed to select his own clothing for this meeting, but he hardly cares; the fabric feels almost too decadent on skin used to far coarser material, and he feels wildly out of place, but this is a performance. all he needs to do is please his new owner… spouse? he has no idea what to call the person he’s been given to, but he supposes he will soon enough.

while acting demure is not at all in aventurines nature, he likes to think he has practiced enough to ace this test. he’d had to please the officials selecting him in the first place, and appearance was only half the battle. he’s fortunate here, too, isn’t he? visible skin remains unblemished, aside from the tattoo; he’s easy to look at.

especially all decked out in the clothing he’s been given. a nice bath, sweet perfumes… this is the nicest he’s looked in his whole life, probably. he is not anxious, because what’s the worst that could happen? he’s thrown back into imprisonment? he’d already been there. so aventurine is able to appear pleasantly calm when he is walked out.

ah- that must be the man. he’s pretty enough; it could have been some old, ugly bastard. aventurine’s luck continues to roll in. now… if only this veritas ratio has a personality that isn’t bottom of the barrel, but then again, beggars cannot be choosers, as they say.]

his eyes land on aventurine once the delegates from the ipc walk aventurine out. as promised, he’s objectively attractive and shorter than veritas with eyes that pierce through a room. )

You may go. ( a beat, as the ipc members exchange a glance, bamboozled. ) Yes, you. Leave.

( confused but deferntial, the two men leave aventurine there in the midst of the covered balcony overlooking the vineyard. ) Imbeciles.

( tell them how you really feel, ratio. sighing, he steps closer to aventurine, pace calm and even. )

[ ah. so that’s the kind of person he is. aventurine isn’t shocked; he knows how those above him behave, has been on the receiving end of it plenty. aventurine shrugs it off; his smile is placid, practiced in front of a dirty mirror.

…how is he supposed to address veritas? formally? informally? ]

[ a lie, but only half so. aventurine has been excited to get his foot in the door, to crawl his way out of slavery by any means necessary. and here his opportunity is, if he plays it right.
