He checks his timekeeper then moves to sit up against the stage to watch Nickov work. When the stripper comes in close, he'll keep eye contact and slips a few bills into his waistband, drops a wink. It will be only later Nickov notices the bills her in the max for the area (hundred dollar bills, perhaps).

She's a striptease dancer at a travelling carnival and therefore lives on the outskirs of polite society. She's not one to judge people by their appearance. If you're interested, I'm happy to write a starter but I'm hoping you could help me narrow down the options.

I'm thinking of her just coming for a drink or maybe she's fed up with the carnival and is looking for a new job and ends up chatting with Cricket who is the bartender. Maybe they hit it off and sleep together, maybe not. He could also have been helping the carnival with some repairs and that's where they meet. This is never a good time of year for Erwin.

Maybe it would be easier if it wasn't also early spring, when the world hadn't quite yet warmed but the rains had started, cold and wet and dreary, muddy and gray. It's a foul time of year by default, really, then add onto it the grief that weighed him down for weeks both before and after the anniversary of his father's death, and he's resigned himself to always just being pathetic and miserable for the whole month of March and part of April. Until the weather begins to turn for real, when there's more sun and more things springing back to life again, filling him with something that's like hope, but not quite.

It gets him through until next year.

It's been twenty years, now. The number seems impossible. Twenty years...and his father's murder is officially a cold case.

Some years are easier than others, but this year is the hardest yet, maybe. Twenty years on and not much to show for it, as far as justice is concerned. As far as life is concerned.
