A young woman, swallowed up in an oversized jacket and a ratty scarf, rings on her fingers shining orange in the firelight as she warms her hands. Blew in from somewhere, and she'll blow out again soon. But in the meantime here she is, waiting for spring and trying to keep out the chill.

i. She's eyeing the warm drinks being passed around the bonfire, obvious want in her eyes warring with pride and caution. If you catch her eye, she hesitates, then asks, "You done with that?"

ii. Does someone have a guitar, a ukelele, a harmonica? She tips her head towards the music like it offers some of the same warmth as the fire, and taps her hand in rhythm on her thigh. When she picks up the melody, she hums along, with clear tone and good pitch.

iii. The fire's starting to get low. Eurydice eyes the embers, then stands up and glances at one of the other folks around the circle. "We need more wood. C'mon, I saw some pallets back a ways."

A young boy (a young man), working on a song. Doesn't talk much, well -- not at first. Get him to start and he just about won't stop. Not that much to look at, at first, either: scruffy hair, trousers that just about need the suspenders he's wearing to sit at his waist and not his hips after a lean season.

But he loves a bonfire. Sitting and listening to everyone who gathers near, a bright grin when they ask if he knows a tune (he always does; or maybe not, but start singing and he will now). It's where winter fades at the edges, where everyone's warm and happy just for a few moments. That's what he wants.

That and. There's this girl. Woman. Across the flames. He looks at her and he can't tell what he's feeling. Something sad and excited and -- it's like nostalgia. Like he's homesick for a place he's never been, only she's a person, not a place, and he's never known her, but -- it winds its way out into hesitant arpeggios and a steadier fingerpicking, a late spring afternoon still stretching out shadows long with someone singing a tune.

She picks it up and hums along, her voice smooth and clear until it winds down. There's a cup of cider being passed around, and he takes it with a nod of thanks, lifting it to his lips. Her eyes catch his in an unguarded wish, and he freezes, just looking back -- wonders for a minute what it'd be like to have her just be looking at him and not the cider.

"You done with that?"
He becomes abruptly done with that as urgently as anything he's ever done and nods. Shifts over around the curve of the fire to pass it along, shouldering his guitar to pass it. There's always enough to share.

Orpheus passes the thermos to her with both hands and just watches her drink for a moment. Ruffles his hair.

"You're beautiful," he says, abruptly, earnest. Then, flushing: "Your voice, I mean."
Well, he doesn't not -- "I -- mean. ..." He means a lot of things that want to burst from his lips, that some lone voice of caution is holding back.
