Familiar with the concept of 'pet shaming'? Basically, your pet does something bad, you give them a sign, and take a picture so the whole world knows their sins. Google has many examples. Now. We do this for our characters.

(( Gaja would be deeply moved if he knew that. He figures Nam just puts him in a hole until his newly formed body is strong enough to pop back out. Those times are always so unclear to him, he couldn't really hazard a guess and how Nam protects him.

This teasing, though, is going to earn Nam a visit with Gaja's fuzziest hat. Bad behavior isn't rewarded. ))

[ ever since the very beginning, nam has been wrapping himself protectively around the bird, though in those earlier days, the protection wasn't for the bird, but rather the river and land around it. as centuries passed, though, new reasons have cropped up. he'd discovered something new that he wanted to protect.

this teasing, though, should be tolerated and not punished! based solely on the fact that nam has not yet simply swept the bird's ashes into the river to be done with him! which is something he will try to do to the fuzzy hat should it make an appearance ]

Aren't you far too old for such a childish response?

(( there will always be fuzzy hats, nam, even if he only see them once every few centuries. ))

[ fuzzy hats. oh the horror of it all. perhaps some day they will become obsolete and gaja won't be able to find them anymore. then it would only be a matter of time before gaja's collection of fuzzy hats started to run out. they'd become too old to wear and there'd be no new ones made to replace them. what a lovely future that would be! ]

I do. But I like to imagine that one of these centuries, you'll emerge from the ashes of your childish attitude, reborn as someone who can act a little closer to your age.

[ though in truth, he would miss the petty and childish bird. not only would it change so much about the gaja he's grown accustomed to, but then who would nam get to be petty and childish to in return? ]

Think as you like, bird, but that doesn't necessarily make you right.

While that may be true, the fact that you're wrong does make you wrong. I'd much prefer if you were less of a petulant child.

[ he does like gaja just the way he is. after all, if there was anything about the bird that nam truly didn't like, he would've removed gaja from his life long ago ]

(( that said, he immediately reaches out and pokes Nam's cheeks with his index fingers. ))

[ nam leans back and swats at gaja's hand. he doesn't like being touched unnecessarily on the best of days (yet he lets gaja get away with it more than he'd ever actually admit out loud) and today is certainly not the best of days.

brows pulling together and eyes narrowing ever so slightly (a big change for the usually stony-faced dragon), nam takes a full step back from the bird ]

Do you not have some far away stretch of the world you should be exploring?

[ which is nam for "get the fuck away from me". because he heard 'cute' and immediately thought of looks. and his vanity simply couldn't take it. had he thought about it for more than a split second he might've realized what gaja actually means but... ]

(( woops. gaja recognizes the misstep immediately. and given that nam's ego took a hit, he knows better than to try to backpedal and try to explain himself. it would sound defensive and only add more fuel to the fire of nam's upset. best to let the dragon realize what gaja actually meant at his own pace.

so the phoenix bows his head in a nod. disappointed? just a little. he does so enjoy spending time with nam and cutting it short happens more often than he likes. at least he could spend the next decade hunting down the perfect apology gift. ))

[ nam is a little disappointed too, truth be told. he enjoys his time with gaja and often cherishes it when they get to see each other. so to send the bird away so abruptly stings a little. but to be insulted by gaja stings even more (even though nam technically insulted gaja first by calling him a petulant child. even though what gaja said wasn't really an insult).

the dragon just needs time to stew in and sort out his feelings. and once that's done, he'll have the chance to realize his mistake. he just needs some time. he'll come around.

nam turns his head to the side so he doesn't have to look at gaja anymore. who's being the petulant child now? ]

(( is gaja willfully misinterpreting nam's statement to mean 'if you must leave'? it's very likely. it's also just as likely that he isn't. he is, of all things, a hopeful being. ))

Must is a strong sentiment.

[ considering nam's misinterpreted misunderstanding, it's only fair for gaja to have one of his own regardless of whether it's accidental or by design ]

Perhaps, but it's a sentiment I stand behind even still.
