Marriage for love is a such a modern concept. In the past, marriage was
recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS:
STATION: You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
FEUD: You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
ECONOMICS: Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
EMPIRE: You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
TRIBUTE: You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
BLOODLINE: Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
DISAPPROVAL: Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.



POSSIBLE SCENARIOS
FIRST MEETING: This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse.
COURTSHIP: To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates.
ENGAGEMENT PARTY: Be it a huge, formal affair or a small, intimate get together, you're celebrating (or pretending).

[ Lucifer hadn't exactly intended to every remarry. There was Lilith, he's still pining despite the very definitive separation, and after that kind of whirlwind of a romance, well. He has Charlie now — on speaking and living in the same hotel terms and everything! — so it's not like he needs to find anyone else to shower his attentions on. Or try for an heir or whatever Pentagram City's Overlord council had sent some kind of boring message about that he'd skimmed and promptly thrown away.

It's only when Charlie comes knocking on his door, suckered into being their messenger because this was a very important matterh with the war against Heaven, Dad! and her big, pleading eyes, that Lucifer begins to think maybe he should have actually read that long, boring letter.

Because he has no idea how he's ended up here after the whirlwind ceremony and mind-blankingly awful reception, standing in his room with the blood red ritual ribbon still tying him and Alastor together. Because they're married. He's married to Alastor. They are now, somehow, king of Hell and royal consort, husband and husband, and—

Lucifer drags Alastor over to the bed by their ribbon-tied arms, flops face down onto the mattress, and screams into his pillow. ]

[Maya isn't even sure what a Margrave is. All she really does know is that while a Fey leaving Kurain Village to marry a man is unprecedented, there isn't really much she can do about it. Her duties have been made clear to her, and she's bound to those duties. Kurain needs allies, people to trust in their ways and believe them to be good and useful, and Morgan has spoken at length on how someone whose mother was irresponsible enough to abandon the village is obligated to do whatever she could to strengthen its bonds. She's sent Maya off on her own with only a guard arranged for her by the Margrave— well, her and the assets that contributed her dowry. Money in exchange for power and the quieting of a voice that would prevent another's rise to power.

Though the journey was long, the first day or so of her arrival is so busy that Maya barely has time to think about it all. Ladies whose names she can't quite recall yet take her and dress her in clothes more fitting of the region (as surely she must be cold in her own, which she understand,s though she doesn't particularly understand why she isn't made to take care of it herself), and then there are meetings and introductions and more people to learn the names of than she's quite had the chance to process just yet.

And then there's the curious nature of her betrothed. Morgan had made it out to be— well, that Maya had better not complain about what she'd got, because they needed this union. It had made Maya wonder if maybe he'd be unattractive or something, but instead the glimpses she's caught of him are of a man with the reddest hair she's ever seen. Which can only mean, in her mind, that Morgan's warning must be because he's mean instead of unattractive.

Her own assumptions have her feeling wary on the day they've been set to meet. She's got no attendants of her own— Kurain doesn't really have attendants, after all, and if they did Morgan would never have let Maya be spoiled that way— but suddenly she wishes that she'd been allowed to bring any familiar face with her. As it is, she's being sent to a foreign room in a foreign land to meet with a foreign, very pretty man. Or, she supposes, she must be the foreign one in the situation. Whichever it is, the thought of it is making her a bit more nervous than she expected to be as she waits for Sylvain to enter and make his own introduction.

...No, no, even if he is mean, they're doing it for the love and sake of their people, aren't they? And so, she decides, she should try to make a good first impression! She should choose the right thing to say, she's sure, and as she sits at this strange table in this strange chair, she mumbles to herself, trying out different cadences of good morning and good day and good day, sir and How does this day find you, misterrrrraaagh, no, not mister, right?

But in the middle of her rehearsing, the door to the room clicks and begins to sweep open and in Maya's hurry to stand, she knocks the chair back onto the floor with a clatter. She jumps like a startled cat, mouth stretching into a line, and does the quickest thing she can think to do;

try to push the chair back and further away from herself with her foot. This does actually nothing to hide it, and so Sylvain's brand new fiancee is left standing in the middle of the room with a chair on the floor behind her, blinking with eyes as big as a cat's.]

She had a choice on whether she would meet him before now or not, and she said no. It's not that she didn't want to exactly, but she had her reservations. With the chance of them not getting along at all, Oriana was reluctant to get this whole thing started any earlier than it had to be.

Now it's the day of the wedding, and she's dressed in this ridiculous dress, and about to face the man she's avoided meeting for longer than she probably should.

At least her father had made quiet apologies about having her do this, even though she's still here anyway. She knew that there was a lot riding on this, their ability to travel, and her own ability to find security outside of the carnival itself, as well as protection, but she's still not happy about what's going on.

However, she puts a smile on, pushes away a lock of hair, and opens the door where her fiancé was waiting.

"Hello," she says carefully. "If we despise each other before the end of this wedding, I reserve the right to make this relationship cordial, but nothing else."
