courtship: you're old-fashioned - or from an old-fashioned society - and to pursue someone, you have to present them with a gift to make your intentions known.
serious: be it an engagement present or something else, you want your special someone to realize that you want to take things to the next level.
ownership: the present's twofold; it also shows everyone else that this person is yours.
apologize: oh. you've really, really screwed up. can you make it up to them?
special occasion: ordinary gifts won't do for a birthday, anniversary, or wedding.
homemade: this is no purchased trinket. you made it with your own two hands.
priceless: the item you give came at great cost, is an heirloom, or previously owned by someone you love.
