Karaoke (カラオケ, clipped compound of Japanese kara 空 "empty" and ōkesutora オーケストラ "orchestra") is a type of interactive entertainment usually offered in clubs and bars, where people sing along to recorded music using a microphone.

[ In Non-Specified Jamjar land, Rin is at least familiar with the concept of karaoke, but she hasn't yet gotten very familiar with modern music. It sounds very different than what she's used to, and though not at all bad, it can be a bit too much sometimes.

She flicks through the options until she finds something that is maybe not quite so... fast, and settles on what must be an oldie for Youko. Her voice is clear, but her singing strained as she tries to go along with the lyrics on the screen.

Afterwards, she plops down on the sofa at lets out a puff of air. ]

Ahhh! Sorry, I don't think I'm very good at this.

[The pitfalls in her performance don't stop Youko from clapping for Rin, or trying to be encouraging for her friend when she flops down on the couch. After all, the point of karaoke is stress-relief and fun.]

I think you did well. It's just hard when you're not at least a little familiar with the songs.

[She picks up the wretched tablet that controls the machine — what she wouldn't give for a simple book — and smiles at Rin, gently elbowing her.]

[ The encouragement is balm on Rin's soul. Usually when she tries things and fails at them, people tell her how stupid she is for it. So she pumps her fist and nods with renewed resolve. ]

[If Youko did not believe in second chances, the hypocrisy would damn her first.

Rin's enthusiasm is infectious, so much so that Youko is even willing to fight with her phone to hunt down the lyrics to her song, showing her friend the results in stationary miniature when she succeeds.]

[ Rin leans in close to read the lyrics on the small screen, forming the words with her mouth and muttering under her breath. ]

Hmmm... I don't know if I can remember it all, but that should be better. Alright!! Let's try again!!

[ She bounces to grab the microphone ferociously, looks over to Youko, and nods. ]

[She is going to remember Rin's determination the next time she feels like she's flagging in her studies.

Youko watches the other girl bounce into place and give the go ahead, returning her nod firmly, typing in the song number and hitting the start button on the pad. She gives a little wave and a grin.]
