The Soulmate Meme

A soulmate (or soul mate) is believed by some to be the person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity, similarity, love, sex, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, or compatibility. In our world, the concept of soulmates is quaint, but frankly antiquidated. But somewhere out there, in the vast cosmos, there is a world that still values this tradition. No, not just values. Society is practically built around it. After all, they've found the powers of the soulmates. When they're together, both halves of the whole can find a peace that is desired by all; not only that, either, but also the two can unlock the. Everyone is believed to have a soulmate, and those who have yet to find there's a sense of emptiness that cannot be filled by other distractions. There are few limits on who can be destined for each other. The fates have often chosen people completely opposite of each other, some even on opposing sides or factions. Attraction between soulmates is instantaneous upon the first meeting, though relationship styles can very. It's almost always romantic, but sometimes not sexual, despite that usually being the case. Some even say that procreation can only be done by soulmates, but that's only a rumor and highly untested. Yet this bond is not always sunlight and rainbows. You'll practically feel each other emotions The problem, of course, comes in finding one (if you even want to at all, as some rebel against the system as much as they can). How many people are out there, and what's the probability of finding them in a lifetime? What if they're not in the same country or even the same planet! There's also the dilemma of having only one soulmate. Though people can have plenty of lovers, those in this world can only find true satisfaction from their other half. It's a twisted and difficult web, and sometimes unmatched people can face prejudice from those around them and the established order, but finding that one special person is said to trump all of that. Natasha doesn't believe in soulmates. She knows other people do, and that they exist — she's pretended to be the other halves of countless people. But that doesn't mean she believes that you have to find them; that for some reason you're incapable of living on your own up until that point. Natasha values freedom and bodily autonomy just as much as she values spiritual autonomy. It isn't, contrary to belief or rumor, that exact culture that makes her trust Clint Barton anyway, and the only time she ever second-guesses her belief in the world is when she meets Coulson.

She likes his silence, his mild tone of voice, the unflappable way he'll give her directions out of a building about to collapse in on herself. It's a strange feeling, but Natasha's been trained since birth; she can easily explain away those moments of being 'clued-in' to his emotions by her extensive training.

It's only after the Chitauri, when Natasha finds herself spending night and day at his side until he's well enough to be released, finds herself worried, that she thinks maybe those first instincts might have been right.

The world is a strange place.

Mycroft finds himself moving through the city after a man he doesn't know. He's pulled towards him though, gravitating to him like something caught up in a magnet.

He cant' resist.

Eventually he catches up to him, putting on a genial smile and tapping on on the shoulder.

"Excuse me," he says politely. "This is going to seem odd but I can't seem to take my eyes off of you."

The door to the room in the random warehouse, why is it always a warehouse, in the meat packing district flings open, why is it always the meat pack district, two large goons drag Clint back in to the room. Dumping the blond on the floor, the injuries are obvious, they've been torturing him trying to get codes he doesn't know.

"Hope our ride gets here soon." He gives a wet sounding laugh a small trickle of blood running down the side of his mouth. He tries to sit up but it's not working out so well with the stab wound to his thigh and a broken wrist.

He looks over at Phil and takes a slow deep breath, he could get through this as long as Phil was by his side he decides, but still there is that lurking thought that he's not going to get out of this one alive.

She knew instantly that he was different, special somehow. But at the time she couldn't articulate what it was, or why she seemed to be the only one who felt it. It wasn't like she had much time to dwell on gut feelings, anyway - there was a body to be examined and exchanging pleasantries with the detectives on the case was over.

That was how they'd met. Introduction in the hallway before pulling out the remains of a murdered woman. Nothing particularly cheery or even romantic about their first meeting. Molly didn't even see him again until another case a month later. It was a less gruesome case, one which allowed for a bit of small-talk. They had coffee and talked about music. She liked him, and it somehow didn't bother her that he was a bit older. He made a good friend.

Eventually, though, Molly became very aware of her colleagues and outside-of-work friends pairing off and finding their soulmates. Greg was married, had been for a while. Veena and Arthur finally stopped dancing around the subject and went out. And Sally Donovan, well, she was shagging Anderson and apparently didn't give a damn that he was married. Apparently when you knew who your soulmate was, there was nothing to hold you back.

And she stayed the same. It made for a very lonely time, during which she concentrated on work. Maybe that was why she latched on so desperately to a certain consulting detective. He unintentionally insulted her quite a bit, but at least it was something. Besides, there was something special about Sherlock, and the part of Molly trying so hard to find love mistook it for the feeling of a soulmate.

But as she learned, very much the hard way, it wasn't. Her affections were utterly misplaced, and it wasn't until after Christmas that she realized it. "Me an' the wife, it's all sorted." Why was it that those words, so happy on his end, filled her with dread? Molly realized where her heart truly wanted to go, but she couldn't. She couldn't be like Sally, sneaking around for a lover's time and affection. She just couldn't.

She'd been willing to suffer in silence, but only a few weeks went by before one of the hospital interns found her a bawling mess in the break room. And since she didn't have any family in the city, a cruel twist of fate had them calling Greg Lestrade, Friend to drive her home.

The one good thing about about being in this crazy city was that there was no way he could run into his soulmate here, not that he believed in the things of course. It was just some romantic rubbish Mani and Pandeia liked to go on about.

And hey they even had a beach party going on right now! Bonus! But then he saw that other new guy across the beach and his stomach flip flopped and his heart skipped a beat and no. No way. It was meant to be a myth! And it sure shouldn't have been someone from another world. A human from another world!
