This is the cutest, most romantic au

Eclipsed on popularity only by the coffee shop AU, the flower shop AU is one of fandom's perennial mainstays. Add in shipping or gen and this slice-of-life trope really blooms!

- Comment with your character, of course! Include preferences and, if desired, a small blurb about what role your character might take. Don't be afraid to bring in adjacent AU types, like coffee shop AUs, modern AUs, or the ever-popular flower shop/tattoo parlor AU.

There are a lot of flowers. They line every wall of the shop, flourishing in mismatched pots and spilling out onto the street. There are even a few pots of flowers behind the counter, cordoned off behind a rope. A sign reads DANGEROUS: DO NOT TOUCH OR EAT.
The whole vibe is closer to an enchanted forest than strictly a business, but the shop isn't without its customer comforts. There's almost always tea on offer at the counter, brewed from the shop's own blossoms and herbs. And there's exactly one spot to sit, a patio chair next to a little bookshelf. The shelf holds volumes like The Language of Flowers and A to Z Herbal Compendium--and, of course, more flowers.
The online reviews say things like At first I wasn't sure this guy knew what he was doing, to be honest, but the arrangement turned out breathtaking! My wedding went perfectly and Thanks to Matt for a magical 40th birthday
(Reply, from the business owner: Hahaha, thanks so much for the opportunity, Sofia. Happy to provide metaphorical magic anytime) ]
i. matt hires you
[ It's your first day at Breathe Sweet, and who knows why you've decided to take on this job. Change of scene? Cover for your new identity? Investigating a hellmouth that may or may not be under this location? Whatever the reason, the application process was not rigorous! Also, magic was not mentioned at any point.
No reason.
Matt, your ostensible boss, looks momentarily surprised to see you. Then he seems to remember oh right, employee, and gives you a tour around the very small space. ]
And I'd wear gloves back here, just in case you brush up against the– [ He gestures towards DANGEROUS: DO NOT TOUCH OR EAT. ] Try not to breathe too deep, too. Foxglove has been known to affect people through its pollen.
ii. there is no demon in this prompt
[ Matt has been getting suspicious that certain entities from his past may be stirring.
Some of it is general ill portents. Unusual weather. More people getting sick than he's used to seeing this time of year. Flowers wilting in their pots with no apparent cause. And some of it, for want of a better word, is internal. The bad dreams he had for years after that night in high school are returning–which is to say, the dreams themselves aren't identical. But the shadow at their center, rapacious and mocking, is all too familiar.
Matt isn't sure what to do yet. So in the meantime, he goes to work. He arranges bouquets, he works to perk up the drooping blooms in his shop, he pours tea. If you need flowers for any reason, he's here to help! (If you need spells cast for any reason, he will pretend badly that he doesn't know what you're talking about.)
THWACK! goes a dead bird against the front window. A crow, it looks like. ]
Huh, [ Matt says distantly. He seems to be staring past the site of the impact, rather than at it. ] Weird.
iii. for nefarious and/or evil characters
[ Listen, I saw I read one recently where Character A was a mob boss who sent flowers to his enemies to "send a message." And it spoke to my soul.
So let's say your character has less than savory intentions in life. Maybe they ARE a mob boss who sends flowers to their enemies. Maybe they're out here supervillaining. Maybe they're looking to avail themselves of a certain florist's magical abilities, but have correctly deduced that he wouldn't be on board if he were asked directly. (And he is not sneaky. He could easily be spotted casting spells after hours.) I can guarantee you a space where Matt WILL buy your cover story and WILL NOT guess your wicked schemes unless they're ridiculously obvious. ]
iv. wildcard
[ This is all just what came to mind for me. Feel free to throw something else on the board! ]
[ ooc: Character info here & PSL prefs here. Brackets or prose are equally good by me. ]
There is no Demon in this Prompt
He'd been shopping for an interesting assortment of plants; he'd even called ahead to see if Matt might have moly in stock. So perhaps the reaction being atypical wasn't a complete surprise.

In the here and now, Matt blinks back to attention.
It's definitely not the question he expects, but he's grateful to be given a direct, simple inquiry. Something with a yes or no answer. He slides out from behind the counter and crosses the shop, forest green Breathe Sweet apron flapping lightly as he strides. He reaches the window and peers down. A wince.
"Just the one, yeah." He turns back towards Randolph. "I guess I should call animal contr--"
THWACK! THWACK THWACK!
That's three more crows, apparently. Matt jumps and swears, dragging a hand through his nest of dark hair.

He moves a pot of aloe closer to the window that’s being assaulted the moment he finds it.
