If it serves as an effective deterrent, I'd say yes. However... it doesn't always, and often revenge is expensive to the outraged party in time and resources.

Revenge is often too corrosive to be of much use.

I do occasionally pursue the redress of grievances, and I have enforced the law, on occasion, with pleasure. But I have the luxury of a position of interpretive power that means I can do so... an avenue not open to everyone.

The tricky thing is, that pragmatically I'd want the people who hurt me to be unable to hurt anyone else. And I want people who are like me to not have to grow up with that shit.

But some of them, emotionally speaking, I'd want them to feel how I felt when they hurt me, and understand what it was to be the child I was, and I don't think that's possible.
