It was given to me. As, perhaps, it falls upon each of us. Choice is not so free as we might like.

Such shocking news as I received could hardly have been brushed aside, and it seemed unwise to dismiss the pleas of a familiar ghost. If nothing else, I owed my father the duty of investigation; from there, the seedling simply grew.

And you must understand that consuming though it became, this was not the only venture that constituted my existence. I counted myself a son and a student (among other roles) before I became a man of schemes and murder.
