THE MAFIA LIFE MEME

Sure, there are slick suits and Tommy guns, but the Mafia is about getting a certain level of respect and power. You might have to get your hands dirty sometimes, but you are near untouchable... as long as you don't get on the wrong side of someone higher up than you, that is.

The Family
1. Boss - The boss is the head of the family, sometimes called Don or Godfather. The entire family answers to you and you take a cut of every operation taken on by the family. Even though your position has the highest respect, it comes with its fair share of responsibilities and danger. You better watch your back and learn to deal with the stress.
2. Underboss - the underboss is usually appointed by the boss and is second in-command. They deal with the day-to-day responsibilties of the family. They are also the successor in case anything happens to the Don.
3. Consigliere - The consigliere is an advisor. The Boss's right-hand man. Mediator of disputes, representaitves, etc. They are the third ranking member. The Don appoints someone they trust deeply.
4. Capo - Capo, or captain, is in charge of a crew of soldiers who report directly to them. Each crew contains a number of soldiers and associates. The capo is appointed by the Don and reports to either him or the underboss. He is responsible for any assigned tasks, including murder.
5. Soldier - A soldier is a member of the family. He is a made man and cannot be touched without permission from a soldier's boss. They are the workers and usually handle committing crimes from assault, murder, intimidation, etc.
6. Associate - An associate is not a member of the Family officiall, but they do work with them. Their duties can run from carrying out similar tasks to a soldier to being nothing more than an errand boy. They can be lawyers or dirty cop, doctors, or anything else that might be useful to the family. They can be made official if recommended by a made man already in the family.
7. Rat - You're lower than dirt by Mafia standards. You've the code of silence, Omerta, and told on your family. If you aren't put in witness protection, you are an extremely likely target. Good luck watching your back and you better hope that deal you made was worth it!

Outsider
1. Lover - Either a spouse or a kept lover on the side. You are to be treated with respect and as long as you keep your mouth shut, you probably won't want for anything if you're involved with a higher up in the Family.
2. Cop - You finally got the dirt you wanted or maybe you're just watching certain members really close. Maybe you just want a nice little pay off to keep your mouth shut too.
3. Family - Family by blood. Father, mother, sister, brother, child, etc. You might be kept in the dark about the business or just turn a blind eye to it. Maybe you want to finally confront your family about their activities and get an honest answer out of them. Maybe you're offering a hide out or to stash goods, even if it's reluctantly.
4. Indebted - You made a deal with the mob and you are now indebted. Either you pay back your debt or you're in deep trouble. You might intimidated, roughed up, or murdered. They might be threatening your business or possibly even your loved ones.
5. Avenger - You knew someone who got in trouble with the mob or was wronged in some way by them and you're out for revenge now. It might be downright suicidal, but you're not going to be deterred.
6. Targeted - You either know something you shouldn't or did something else to get on the Family's bad side. Now you're being targeted for assassination. Maybe they've already found you or maybe you're getting as much stuff together and hitting the road as soon as you can.
7. Other - Maybe something was forgotten off the list. If you can think of something else you want to do or be, this is the option for you.

[While Marlowe would still be a non-mobster detective here, he often has to work alongside gangsters and will do so again. He might also find cruel, money hungry, bloody minded gangsters to be very hot and sexy, and he might shoot his mouth off so they'll slap him around. Anything is possible!]

If you'd asked him in high school, he'd never have even considered ending up here, but that had been before he'd met Gojo Satoru. The high school itself had been one of the best ones in the city, difficult to get into but he'd managed. Scholarships had been integral to him making it through all three years and then university.

He'd done his due diligence and while he was still on patrol, he'd made some connections and was at least looking at moving up within the next year or two. He kept his private life private though and with good reason. He'd been following the detective he was assisting working on a case that had just come up, tied to one of the largest families in the area, so he'd been reading the file, lost track of time and it was nearly midnight when he let himself back into his apartment, checking his phone as he locked the door.

"You know I hate it when you sit in the dark like that." His voice is neutral, Suguru putting his bag away before moving further into the living room.

"You'd rather I turn all the lights on, inviting questions from your neighbours why everything is illuminated when you're not even at home?" he sing-songed, the ever present insolence in his voice toned down for Geto's sake. "I'm not the one who'd get into trouble, honey."

Nobody on his side would care that Gojo is dating a cop, because nobody on his side would believe it in the first place. Everyone knew their waka had several girls and boys, all of whom were madly in love with him, and of better standing than a cop.

"Welcome home~"

"There's always a happy medium and my curtains block out light." He counters, entirely umpressed, his expression twisting slightly at the endearment.

"...Are you staying the night?"

Satoru blinked, astounded that Suguru assumed he would go through all that trouble (yes, drawing curtains counted as trouble) when his solution was that much easier.

"Why? Feeling lonely?"

"If I was, I would have called Shoko." It's dry, Suguru moving to close the curtains before turning to walk into the kitchen, hands rising to take his hair down so it fell loose down his back.

"Food?"

"Ouch."

So Gojo was just the (in)convenient bed warmer? His ego was going to bruise.

"Sure. What are you making?"

"Who said I was making anything? There are leftovers in the fridge or you can order something." Because like hell he's spending his money on Satoru given their difference in income.

"Take your pick."

"Whew, that's cold." Unfolding himself from the couch, Gojo made his way over to the kitchen to check out the fridge. Leftovers are still food and there's no point in wasting that.

"Are you just living off take-away these days?"

"I've been working nonstop so yes. more or less. Some of us have to do that, you know." It's dry as he drops onto the couch, running fingers through his hair and rolling his shoulders.

[Ayo! I'm not much of a superhero reader but I could definitely see Selina as a mob boss. This journal is for my OC, who could be anything from a boss to a goon to consigliere to Selina. I also run the journal for Philip Marlowe, who's a detective and deals with gangster all the time. Wanna do some girlboss gangster shit?]

[Word! And lol, same here life is busy and I'm glad to backtag when I can. So no worries if you don't get back at once. I'm all about mob stories and especially noir as a genre (bc it's full of mobsters), so I can see a number of things working here. Luka has a couple AUs where he's a mob boss himself, he's the right kind of prim and ruthless for it, but he also makes a great bodyguard/henchmen so it really comes down what you'd like to play Selina as. I could also see it working where he's a mob boss who's contracting out a job to her, if you wanted to keep her OG vigilante status.]

[ selina was depicted as being very "for the good of the city" in the brief time she was head of the calabrese family (not canon anymore, afaik, but my headcanon has her as the illegitimate daughter of a different gotham mob boss) -- if she can control x, y, and z, she can try to clean up the city that she loves despite the fact that it's kind of a cesspool. she can be very cold and ruthless in her dealings, she can be outright terrifying, but she's also a big softie where innocents are involved. other than that, i'm pretty go with the flow?? i have no real preferences, so i'm down to roll with whatever you're feelin'. ]

[Well as a feminist and lesbian I think that Selina Kyle as a mob boss is just too cool and idea to miss! Maybe Luka could be a vestigial part of another mob and he helps her stage a coup against them to get into her good graces and leverage a position of power in her family. He's immortal, which can be played a few ways but I think in a mob/modern setting it would probably work best as 'enh he's just been in the business so long you kind of ignore how long he's been here,' especially since he won't be family-family to any of the people he's working for. Closer to a contract killer or outside consultant whose work has gotten him in good with a family he no longer cares about, and everyone just assumes he's been working since he was a kid and that's why he's in his '30s' and yet dons in their 80's remember him.]

[Canonically an intelligence officer who was under assignment in the mafia on behest of the government but eventually returned to the government once his assignment ended.

So something along those lines, kind of a liasion type position depending on the situation since he has ties to several organizations.]

[Boss. Canonmates welcome. For crosscanon, he's very much the organization is what matters and he will make choices based on those parameters. He's not the worst mafia boss either.]
