[Bringing the junkyard owner's son back home the other night was about as smart as jamming a wet fork into a power socket. He'd known that the moment he recognized the guy, beaten and bloody on the pavement, barely conscious as the punks who'd been working him over scattered into the woods like cockroaches. Kane had let them run, not even sparing a glance to watch them go as he bent and without hesitation hoisted the "psycho babysitter" of Haddonfield onto his good shoulder. The smart choice would have been to walk away and let Corey Cunningham be somebody else's problem, but nobody ever accused him of being smart.

So he brought Cunningham home, stitched up the nasty gash above the guy's eyebrow and cleaned up his other cuts and scrapes, then left him in the spare bedroom and went to work in the morning like none of it ever happened. The only explanation he bothered leaving for Corey was a terse one-sentence post-it with directions to the door. Cunningham was a big boy who could show himself out and if he had sticky fingers, the joke was on him because there wasn't anything in the place worth stealing anyway.

There wasn't any sign of him when Kane got home that night, nothing seemed to be missing, and he figured that was the end of it. So much the better too, because up to that point he'd actually been doing a good job of not drawing any attention to himself for once. No more attention than a guy pushing six foot two, built like a Mack truck and wearing a beat-up prosthetic arm drew just by being around in a town like Haddonfield, anyway. Eight months in and he still drew stares going about his day, but he'd expected that. That was why he took the repo man job.

If it was like a dream sometimes, this simple peaceful life in midwest suburbia, then feeling his doorknob already unlocked after coming home from a late night's was like a splash of cold water jolting him back awake. An observer might have thought the knob buzzed him with a burst of static electricity from the way his hand twitched around it.

The sleepy-eyed and easygoing Kane that Haddonfield knows isn't the same man who eases open his door and carefully steps inside. The muscles on his large frame are drawn taut, his sleepy brown eyes have sharpened into slits, and he checks around the corner before flipping on the light with his false hand and stepping briskly into the living room.
