A cigarette smokes itself in the plastic ashtray in front of him, and he watches the room from a corner booth. He's a slump shouldered, short, acerbic little man with his crumpled hat hung on the post at one end of the booth. Between bites of egg he pokes at the toast and puffs on the cigarette, the last of the days two packs so he's trying to make it last.
