Hygge (Danish, noun): a complete absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing things.



Dark winter evening: it's raining outside and it's cold, you're stocking up on blankets, lighting all the candles you can get your hands on and the tea's already brewing in the kitchen. Fend off the darkest season as the Danes do and have a good time with people you love.

First summer picnic: the sun's shining from a clear, blue sky, the temperatures have finally risen after half a year of depressive icy greys and it's time to go outside, bring a picnic basket and break out the wine and strawberries. Enjoy the sunlight while it lasts in a park somewhere or in the forest, if you're adventurous.

Autumn stroll aftermath: the winds are harsh and the leaves colour everything golden and red. Coming home from a walk that has left your cheeks red and your hands cool, go make some hot chocolate and fix up a bowl of marshmallows, it's time to get cosy.

Springtime playtime: the outdoors are turning a fresh green and the sky is bluer than it's been all winter. Bring sodas and sandwiches and go play in the garden. Some exercise should be healthy for the mind as well as for the body, because a game is the best way to shake off winter and reconnect with friends.

[ It's mid-winter, but wildflowers still thrive in some of the snow-dappled front yards of the little cottages to the north of the Court of Fontaine.

There are still corners of Fontaine that don't seem cursed by the egregious inequities of the city, but they're dying out. Unlike the Court, where the well-to-do walk past neatly paved streets and consign those less fortunate to the sewers and shadows, the villages in Fontaine's mountains are seemingly untouched by concepts like the haves and have-nots. Many of these villages are beautiful, but also partially abandoned, with their residents having long left their quaint little towns for the promise of better prospects in the city. Liyue is going through something similar where most of the residents of Qingce Village work in the Harbor; so too it is with Fontaine, and these little hamlets out in the mountains are in such a late stage of death that they don't even have names to go by anymore.

Aether seems to know his way around these abandoned hamlets, though. The snowstorm that overtakes them as they're hiking up the cliffs is gentle — hardly the kind of raging blizzard that strikes without warning on Dragonspine — but the traveler takes one look at how he and Wriothesley are both dressed and makes an immediate beeline for one of the cottages nearby. It seems locked at first glance, but Aether fishes out the key from where it was hidden, dozens of years ago, in a flowerpot out in the yard. Then he turns the lock, easy as anything, and pushes the door open with his shoulder, speaking above a light creaking of its hinges. ]

Paimon and I borrowed this cottage last time we were here... Took us half an hour just to clear out all the dust and cobwebs. But that wasn't very long ago, so it should still be pretty clean.

[ He beckons Wriothesley inward with a light twitch of his fingers, looking for all the world as though he's invited the fortress administrator into his own home. The traveler even takes his shoes off at the entrance, busying himself with lighting some candles and oil-lamps to illuminate the house. ]

And as if some ominous sign, a storm had settled in and knocked out all the power within the surrounding area. Omega, though, knew what the cause of it was. Water still held some residual feelings about the events unfolding, no doubt. To be called back into service after all that had transpired those years ago.

He would seek them out later. Let them settle, first. Until then, the Elemental could be found in the kitchens making some tea by light of lantern and candle. Here there was a quiet that was enjoyable and for a split second he could feel the sharp cut of irritation when the kitchen doors opened. Though it faded away when he saw just who had entered. ]
