congratulations: you are dead! maybe you know how, maybe you don't. perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming -- but none of it matters. you know you're dead, and the ship is taking you to an afterlife. perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

it'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people on the ship. death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. but death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive -- or long gone.

More than anything else right now, Steve is reminded of the ship that carried him across the Atlantic with the USO, so many years ago. Just him, a few stage hands, and a dozen girls shivering in the dance skirts they'd been talked into wearing so the press could take a few photos of them all before they got on board. He was cold too, in all the knit spangles, but at least his legs were covered. The wind over the sea bites cold.

At least, the wind over the Atlantic bites cold. Not so much this ocean, or whatever it is. You can feel the motion, but the wind is neither warm nor cool. And there are no backup dancers next to him, trying to use him as a windbreak, which is for the best because he's too small for that now.

"I guess it's been a long time coming," he announces to no one in particular. "When everything you do starts remindin' you of something you did before, it might be time to call it a day. Too many memories."

[Contrary to her the giant red headed elf sharing her quarters on this vessel seems to have quietly accepted his fate. He stares with dull, emotionless eyes at the display before him. The rage doesn't faze him much, it is the weeping that finaly moves him somewhat for he has never been good at ignoring the pain of others.]

Do not weep, my lady. [He tries to comfort her. Though he makes no move to stand or approach her, still to drained from long centuries of barely hanging on to life to even stand.] It is not so bad a thing as all that.

[Being dead did not bother him much, if anything he felt slightly relieved at the fact. He didn't have to fight anymore, he could simply lie here on the floor of this strange vessel. Still and unmoving, finaly free of the great weight his life had felt like at the end of it all.

Hoffman appears next to him on the boat, fading in like a cheap transition. He's slumped over at first, but awakens sharply with a yell. He looks different than he did when Strahm last saw him. Disheveled, in a thick coat and jeans both covered in filth, and the right side of his face disfigured with a long, winding scar that goes all the way to his ear, haphazardly stitched together.

He looks around frantically. Doesn't seem to notice Strahm at first, too concerned with Gordon, who he's had many a starvation-fueled dream about while dying in the place where the bastard sawed his foot off. Is he here? Can he strangle him? Beat him? Bite his throat out? Hair falling into his eyes, he stands, stumbles, and crashes to the ground, rocking the boat they're both trapped in.]
