Clint loves the fall.
Even better? He loves the fall in the country where the air is crisp and fresh and it isn't New York where it smells like.. well. Less said about that the better, right?

He's bouncing a bit like an excited dog as they approach the carnival. No marks to track, no targets, just a day off.

"Come on Tasha, it's gonna be great! Games we can win, junk food, pumpkin tossing, perfect way to spend a Saturday!"

It's not often that she and Clint manage to get out of New York for a fun reason. Especially lately. It seems like every time her phone rings, it's another urgent mission. Which makes sense - she and Clint work well as a team, and they're undoubtedly the most adaptable agents on SHIELD's roster.

Unfortunately, it's made it a little difficult to explore this blossoming feeling of oh, we're doing this? that their friendship has been steadily growing into. But they finally hit a Friday without a summons from Fury, and she hadn't been able to resist the suggestion that they make the trip out to attend a fall carnival.

There's an amused look on her face as he practically vibrates with excitement beside her. Her shoulder bumps into his as they wind their way towards the carnival entrance. "I think the order of the day should be gaming the games so we can hand out stuffed animals."

Clint really owes Coulson one for letting them take off for a weekend. Who else but their handler would key in on feelings that they hadn't quite figured out yet?

He grins at her, steering them towards the midway. "Loser buys the first round of junk food and beer." Because they have to have fun and make it a game, right? It takes the pressure off the idea that this might be a capital D kind of date.

Natasha will, of course, feign perfect confusion if Coulson dares to suggest he knows what's going on. Possibly even after she and Clint manage to figure out what exactly it is they're doing. He's one of the few people in her life that she's truly comfortable with. There's a lot at risk.

But it's hard to ignore that growing feeling that there's a magnet between them steadily drawing them closer and closer together.

"Deal. But you have to use your left hand for the shooting games." She arches her brow at him as her lips twitch into a little smile.

Any time Clint can coax one of those little smiles to the surface, it feels like a win. He's learned her expressions, to spot the genuine reactions and the times she needs to retreat. Lately there have been more moments of just those genuine ones and it's pretty perfect. It makes his stomach do a weird twisty thing that he likes.

"Fine," he concedes with a smile because they both know that isn't really a challenge.

Darts are a good warmup. Sure they're off balance and dull as hell, but Clint walks away with a massive stuffed Hulk under his arm and a smile on his face.

"C'mon. Let's find a kid to give this to, I'm starving."

Natasha appreciates the way that Clint can read her. It's not something she ever expected to find in another person. At one point, even genuine friendship had felt out of reach. But he's been a steady presence in her life, drawing her into his orbit with an easy humor and unexpected honesty that's - well, enormously appealing.

She looks amused when he claims a ludicrously sized Hulk for his efforts. "One game and he's ready to pack it in. Are you afraid I'm going to show you up?" With a pointed arch of her brows, she turns toward the shooting galley game and hands her money up to the game attendant.

She claims a fake rifle that's attached to the game stall with a wire. It's light as hell, and she can see the way it pulls to the left as she holds it up. It only takes one shot for her to figure out how to compensate, and she pings down the row of fast moving targets on the upper row. The attendant hands over an oversized stuffed pink money, and Natasha grins at Clint as she turns and balances the animal against her hip.

"Now we can go."
