Marriage for love is a such a modern concept. In the past, marriage was
recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS:
STATION: You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
FEUD: You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
ECONOMICS: Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
EMPIRE: You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
TRIBUTE: You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
BLOODLINE: Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
DISAPPROVAL: Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

FIRST MEETING: This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse.
COURTSHIP: To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates.

[ The arrangement is made — naturally – without the involvement of either of the two parties to be wed. Or so Astarion assumes; he certainly hadn't been consulted, and as far as he's gathered, such things don't really happen to anyone who does have even the slightest fraction of agency. His first reaction, when he's informed, is spite. Of course this would happen, of course the natural progression of his enslavement would be to be sold off like chattel, except— except for the fact that he knows full well leaving the palace is hardly the same thing as leaving Cazador's sphere of influence. He's expected to be good, to be a willing puppet, perhaps even a spy, and distance won't stop his master from compelling his property to act as he so desires.

It's with that thought in mind that Astarion thinks past his initial dissatisfaction — at least a few years tied to some dreadfully dour woman, no doubt — and begins to consider the notion that this will likely be the best chance he gets to shed the metaphorical chains he's been bound by, these past two centuries. Frankly, it makes him laugh; the idea of a goddess bartering with a vampire, no matter how prominent, feels like an imbalanced deal at best. Perhaps, should he be able to curry his wife's favor — which should be easy, considering the degree to which enticement has become his weapon of choice — she might be able to do— well, something.

Still, he can't help a sigh as he awaits his to-be bride in one of the many rooms of the Szarr Palace (a meeting place he suspects was a sort of concession on the deity's part to give Cazador the impression he holds some sway in this exchange). As he stares at the portraits that line the red and gold walls, his fingers hooked loosely behind his back, he almost feels resentful of the fact that he thinks this might be a good thing — he will no longer be expected to bring victims back to the house, and the fact that he won't have to return here every night gives him a significant amount of latitude, but it's hardly real freedom. It's the spectre of it — enough to keep him obedient.

Even now, he feels like some kind of pet, dressed in clothes that had been picked out for him for the sake of this meeting — black fabric, embroidered with silver thread — though he'd taken care on his own to fix his hair, to apply a little perfume. All things designed to hide what he really is, though he expects that whoever walks into the room next will already be well aware. Both a blessing and a curse — certainly unusual, given how much trouble he's used to going through in order to conceal his nature.

—All in all, not a particularly romantic train of thought to be pursuing on the eve of a wedding, let alone his own. He shakes his head once, biting the inside of his cheek— and then the doorknob clicks. In an instant, he changes; eyebrows arching, a smile spreading across his lips, his gaze heavy — inviting — as he turns toward the door. Even as he bows, he feels a little surprise — she's a pretty thing, isn't she — though he refrains from starting with that thought.
