The Reincarnated Lovers Meme

Everyone knows the feeling of when you see someone and you know you've seen them before. Isn't that a part of déjà vu? But what if the connection you have with that person goes beyond the superficial recognition of familiarity? Perhaps you were connected once...in the most intimate of ways. Some religions and philosophies believe in reincarnation of souls, and it's said that souls could be reincarnated together - once again to follow out the same path they did before. Or maybe not. Maybe it could be a second chance for fixing things that went wrong before, like the a tragedy or circumstances keeping you apart. But can you take that chance? Do you even want to? HOW TO PLAY Comment with your character, stating preferences and pertinent information. Tag around to others and roll the RNG to determine what your scenario will be. The first roll determines the parameters of the "past life," the second the parameters of the "present life." The meme is intended to take place in the present, but there's nothing stopping you from playing out flashbacks to the "past." Play out the scene! WARNING: There will probably be triggers here.		A. THE PAST Medieval: The two of you lived in the middle ages or an equal high fantasy setting. Kings, queens, knights, wizards, your doomed love was set among the sword and shield. Feudal Japan: During this time, honor reigned supreme and warriors lived and died by the sword. Perhaps the two of you lived here? War: World War I, World War II, World War...III? Whatever the tension was, the two of you weren't living in happy times. Not Human: You were gods, demons, monsters, angels - or at least one of you was. Need to Be Near You: You don't know why, but you have to be close to this person, to protect them, to love them. Memories: You're having memories of your past life and it's freaking you out. The Reveal: Somehow, the truth is revealed to you about who you used to be and what you life was like with this person. But I'm Taken: Unfortunately, you've already moved on to someone else who doesn't fit into the picture of your past. You Have to Be With Me: You're determined to rejoin with your past lover...even if they're not interested. He Doesn't See Me: You're afraid your lover only sees the past "you" and not the you who exists now. Are they in love with a memory? Madness Ensues: It's getting hard for you to tell which life is the "real" one, the one you have now or the one in the past. Perhaps you only see one way of release: becoming reincarnated again. It All Worked Out: The battles are fought, the war is one. You've earned your happy ending in this life and the two of you can live together. WILDCARD or CHOOSE YOUR OWN

Runyu is never good enough. He can never save those he loves. He'd failed to save Xiao Xingchen, who had claimed his heart with kindness and selflessness.

He won't fail again. Not Xingchen. So he waits for the feeling that the sweet man has been reborn before swooping down to the human world and watching him, hunting for the best time and way to show himself. And he stops attacks from happening, or at least those that would cause real harm.

Gradually he crafts a persona in this world, and makes it difficult to avoid bumping into the beautiful man every few days. He's just moved in, after all. Surely it can't be on purpose! But he doesn't let himself linger excessively long when they bump into each other, not wanting to scare the other away. Each time, he looks for any sign of recognition.

Xiao Xingchen is indeed reborn, his body whole again. When Runyu first sees him, he is only a child, playing gently with a litter of kittens that had been born in his family's barn. He grows steadily, as humans do, and he lives a quiet, humble life, devoting himself to the creatures in his care. Runyu is one of the villagers that he sees most often and even though he gives the man a happy smile, he can't help feeling...strange.

It isn't until he is an adult that he begins to, at last, seek Runyu out. Carefully. Sometimes he even tries to spy on the man, his expression one of deep concentration.

Oddly enough, Runyu doesn't seem to age. People don't think to question him about it, they just accept he's odd. Maybe in that respect he cheats, but he simply doesn't care. Not if it lets him stay close and watch over Xingchen.

He loves the happiness in the child's smile and he always makes sure to pause and speak with the growing boy. But then that changes, and he finds himself searched for. He doesn't make it difficult for Xingchen to find him, though sometimes, he plays. Pretends he isn't aware he's being watched as he meditates, or works in his garden that supplies a great deal of the herbs and spices for the village.

It's when he goes out to the forest with a basket that he waits out of sight for Xingchen to catch up, and one such day that he leads the way deeper into the trees than most dare go. "You have been watching me quite a bit lately," he murmurs without turning to look at his follower. As if he can talk!

The oddity draws his attention to Runyu more. Who is this man and why does he feel...familiar? Xiao Xingchen is innocent and curious, hiding poorly as he shadows the immortal's steps. Even when he isn't necessarily trailing him, Xingchen will sometimes find himself in Runyu's garden because it feels...safe.

On the day he follows the other man into the forest, he knows he shouldn't keep going and yet he must. Something compels him onward and though he slips behind a tree when addressed, he flushes with confused emotions.

"You interest me." he murmurs, almost apologetic as he peeks out, "Runyu..." his very spirit shakes as he says the name, "May I tell you something strange?"

Runyu hears that apology and it makes his heart clench. But the sweet voice is just as he remembers, and it soothes his spirit. The question finally has him half turn, head turning to study the young man with a serene little smile.

"You can tell me anything you want."

His senses stretch over the woods. They're safe here.

A sense of calm follows Runyu's response and Xingchen steps out from his hiding place to stand beside the tree. He is dressed in humble robes yet, oddly enough, they are still mostly white.

"I've had dreams about you. It's...me...in them, but not me." he shakes his head, "I feel close to you in those dreams - like..." his cheeks flush, "we are...partners."

That isn't exactly the right word for it.

His eyes widen just a little and he feels his face heat just a little as he ducks his head. So. Is it really time? Runyu glances at Xingchen again, feeling his heart start to race.

"Then let me ask you something," he offers after a moment.

"Do you believe in rebirth? With all your heart and soul, do you believe it happens?"

"Yes." Xingchen answers without hesitation, "Our spirits cycle through life and death multiple times." he then blinks and tilts his head, resting a hand on the tree's trunk, "Are you saying I have been reborn?"

Xingchen earns a much warmer smile at that utter certainty.

"...Yes. I have been waiting for you. Your dreams are at least based on memories of a past we shared."

Runyu waits a beat. Here comes the true uncertainty. "Does this bother you? That we have been, in another life, together in every way two people can be?" His heart and soul ache to be reassured. To bask in the light that in Xingchen.

To be seen and loved just for who he is.

A cascade of longing grips his heart and refuses to let go. Xiao Xingchen pinks to his ears and stares at the beautiful man before him. Had they really...been lovers? His dreams have definitely skewed in that direction. So much so that he has awoken hard more than once or twice.

"No." he breathes and takes a few steps towards Runyu, "I called you... A-Yu." his voice quiets shyly, "You used to kiss me and lay in my bed."

The blush gives him hope. There hasn't been a day he hasn't thought of Xingchen since he'd lost him.

Runyu shivers at that breath, and then that almost forgotten name. It draws him closer, each step Xingchen takes is mirrored. "And you were my A-Chen," he answers softly, hearing the longing in his own voice.

"Do you remember what I am? Who I am?"

Now he hesitates. He doesn't want to sound crazy, but they both know he is a terrible liar. It's best if he tells the truth.

"A...A god." he murmurs, flushing darkly at the sound of his once nickname, "You look after the night sky. I would sleep under the stars to be close to you."
