YES EXCELLENT.
[he's waving a small cookie in one wing, furiously enough that it's hard to see the little slip of paper still sticking out of one end of it--which has a bite taken out of it. well, it's his first time eating Chinese delivery; can you really blame him for not knowing there was something inside? a Le Bel can hardly be expected to understand the customs of strange foreign commoners!]
no subject
[No need to go shutting down his favorite takeout place! Tamaki sometimes forgets that not everybody eats commoner food on a regular basis like he does. Making a placating motion with his hands, he launches into an explanation.]
It's all a part of commoner tradition. There are fortunes inside of the cookie to give them hope about their simple lives! It's a sort of two-for-one deal, a meal and the insight of a motivational coach. It's such an interesting idea, don't you think?
[He cracks open his own cookie, careful to take out the slip of paper before eating it.]
Go ahead, my friend. Read your fortune and learn from the wisdom of the commoner's cookie!
no subject
What wisdom could peasants with highly unsanitary practices possibly have to share with me?! And why are the people of the East so obsessed with these slips of paper that supposedly predict their futures? Next you'll be telling me I ought to tie it to a tree if I wish for it to come true!
[Tanabata still confuses him.
Even as he says this, though, cracking the cookie open and then setting it aside to focus on the little paper--because he's curious despite himself, and it seems less likely to give him some kind of disease than actually eating the thing.]
no subject
[He looks down at the tiny slip of paper and reads from it with a great flourish.]
"A truly rich life contains love and art in abundance." Ah, see! This fortune was meant for me!
[He digs through the takeout bag excitedly to find another cookie. Thankfully, the restaurant knows of his fondness for the cookies and always sends him more than he should ever need.]
Read yours, read yours!
no subject
[Upon hearing it, though, he does quiet a little, embarrassed for some obscure reason. And then he finally turns his own slip of paper upright to read from it, with an exaggerated huff, so put upon really!]
"Keep your--"
[Hey, wait.]
There is a word torn out of this one--ah! I bit into it! I consumed part of the paper! "Keep your--something--secret for now!" . . . That was the most important part of the fortune!
[He actually seems kind of worried by this. How can he ever know what needs to be kept secret now?!]
no subject
[The ease with which he's explaining this might imply that he himself has eaten a fortune and had to justify this sort of thing to himself. And look at how well he has bounced back from that! His fill-in-the-blank fortune clearly led him on the right path.]
no subject
[But he's still staring at the fortune, so it's pretty obvious he's taking it more to heart than he'd like to believe. A test, is it . . . ]
. . . Anything I was already inclined to keep secret, I would not be changing my mind about anytime soon. And as for anything I am not inclined to keep secret, I would not be convinced to do so by some slip of paper lurking dangerously within my food. As such, I've already passed this test! I would have hoped for some greater challenge, but we can't expect much from the common people--did you take a second?
[Only just now noticing, as he sets the bitten-up fortune paper aside with a triumphant flourish and finally glances up again. How many cookies do we even have, Suou?!]
no subject
[He gestures to the plastic takeout bag that is filled entirely with cookies before unfolding his second fortune.]
Let's see... "A dark cloud looms over your future's horizon."
[. . .]
[What an awful fortune! Tamaki dramatically hangs his head once he realizes that fate is no longer smiling upon him. In all the fortune cookies he's eaten (which is quite a lot) this is the absolute worst he's gotten.]
I'm doomed! Did you hear that? A dark cloud is going to cover the rays of sunshine that usually shine upon my life!
no subject
--Don't tell me you're taking it that seriously! Idiot! You said yourself they're prepackaged. Anybirdie might have gotten that same fortune; it was only chance that it ended up in this bag! I might easily have chosen that one myself! Don't resign yourself to having your fate determined by some commoner's cookie.
no subject
[Despite being a very intelligent person, when it comes to some simple things like bad fortunes, Tamaki can be quite the idiot. To him, a bad fortune is equal to one of those curses from Nekozawa. Sakuya's logic does nothing to calm him down. In fact, he's only getting louder about his bad fortune.]
The last time I got fortunes, they all came true. It said I would have a huge success, and I ranked second in the class on my math final! [Nevermind that he always ranks second on every final.] Another said I would meet a beautiful girl, and that happened too! [Valid, if you completely ignore that he works in a host club and is paid to have encounters with girls.] My last fortune said a friend would come to me with the answers I seek, and the next morning Kyoya had a full report on something I asked him about the week before!
[In short, Tamaki is one of those people who falls into the exact trap that fortunes set, starting to apply the fortunes to events that are probably going to happen anyway.]
no subject
Calm yourself, Suou! Panicking over nothing won't improve matters at all! If you're so convinced that this fortune is destined to come true, there must also be some way to avoid that fate! There is always a loophole built into that sort of tradition. For example, my mother once told me of a custom involving the fortunes at Japanese shrines during holiday celebrations. There is a certain rare fortune that one may receive in an envelope; whomever lays eyes upon it will die in seven days' time, but the crisis may be averted by tying the fortune to a wire fence and then spending an evening watching a film with a loved one. . . . Though I don't recall if it needs to be a specific film. The point is, there must be some traditional custom to ward off any danger--if you are convinced there is a danger!
[Sure, that seems perfectly rational. Sakuya may be terribly gullible himself about the customs of non-French cultures, but at least he's calm about it.]
no subject
[Tears of joy are practically glistening in his eyes at the suggestion that he isn't resigned to the awful fate set before him. Surely the fortune cookie gods created a way out of bad fortunes for innocent souls like Tamaki Suou! This sort of rationality - that is, the kind that isn't really rational at all - is something he can get on board with.]
[. . .]
[His slight improvement in mood quickly comes crashing back into hysterics once he realizes that he has no clue what the loophole is.]
I haven't heard anything about how to get out of a bad fortune! I've only ever had good ones! Perhaps I will call the restaurant back, and they'll be able to tell me how to get out of a fortune cookie's curse...
no subject
[That's both dubious and convincing; it's true that he always seems to be happy, and fortune always seems to smile upon him . . . but surely that's only a coincidence!
Cracking open his own second cookie, only half-conscious of it, and eying the bag thoughtfully.]
. . . Hmm. What if you simply continued to open them until you received a fortune positive enough to outweigh the effects of that one? Surely the majority of them must be positive, especially if that is all you ever receive. And surely the most recent fortune you open must trump a past one, or else you would not have been fated to receive it. It's as simple as that!
1/2
The perfect loophole! What would I do without you, my friend?
[He immediately digs a cookie out of the bag, rips off its wrapper, and cracks it open. The cookie itself is tossed to the side, since the fortune is what's important here! Tamaki clears his throat, then reads aloud what he is sure will be something good:]
"Watch your back."
no subject
[That good mood didn't last very long. Two bad fortunes in a row? He's definitely cursed.]
no subject
[--concerning . . . no, this is stupid! Walking over to grab that one too, looking it over to confirm--my God, it really does say that.]
What sort of fortune is that?! That sounds more like a threat! Could it be these common cookie-mongers are attempting to warn you of their own plans?! --Aha, one moment!
[They can't have known Suou wasn't alone, could they? If all of these cookies were meant as a declaration of intent, then most of them will be bad fortunes, right?
Sakuya cracks open his own second cookie the rest of the way, discarding it in favor of the fortune inside:]
"Live like you are on the bottom, even if you are on the top."
Wh . . . what?
no subject
[Tamaki can feel pieces of his soul flying away into oblivion. How could such a good day turn on him like this?]
Now we're both doomed! I don't even want to open another cookie! It's only going to pile on the misfortune!
no subject
[The very idea is distressing enough to make one forget that this is a completely ludicrous reason to fear that might happen, even! But not enough to break Sakuya's spirit; they can still win this thing. Nothing is impossible!
He grabs two more cookies, throwing one at Tamaki's head, and then considering the other himself. Wait . . . ]
Aha! I've got it. You have not actually eaten any of the cookies since that first one, have you?
no subject
[Why are you throwing things at him?! Isn't the emotional turmoil enough? He doesn't need plastic wrappers scratching at his beautiful face, too - Oh. He sees what you're getting at!]
I have not eaten the cookies... [He snaps his fingers as he reaches his eureka moment.] Yes, I understand now! Commoners, who cannot afford such frivolity, see wasting food as a sign of disrespect. Since these are commoner cookies, our waste has led to our misfortune. In order to right this wrong, we must actually consume the cookies before taking the fortunes from within!
[Ahahaha, they're so smart! He takes his cookie out of the wrapper, actually eats it this time....
Then doesn't look at his fortune. He gives Sakuya puppy dog eyes, hoping that he will read his fortune first. Tamaki is still too scared that his will be bad.]
no subject
Once he's finished his, he gives Tamaki a long-suffering look, and reads over his fortune with a sigh. It doesn't take a mindreader to know what's going through Suou's empty head.
Ahem:]
Your--secret desire to--completely change your life will . . . manifest.
[Oh.]
no subject
With that logic spurring him on, Tamaki clears his throat and reads from his fortune.]
"Remember to share good fortune as well as bad with your friends."
[Ha. Ha ha ha. Even after eating the cookie, he still ends up with a fortune like this. Why, commoner cookie gods? He's done nothing but appreciate your culture! And he always tips the delivery boy generously!]
Sakuya, did you hear that? Our fortunes are shared.
no subject
I-I refuse to share in your bad fortune! I flat-out refuse to--wait, Suou! That's a simple enough solution!
[He pounds his wing on the floor, as if to call order to the court, and then lifts it in a sweeping gesture.]
It's only your fortune that's bad, not mine. If I take just one more cookie, and I receive a positive fortune, that will be the end of that! Our newly shared good fortune will surely outweigh anything that's come before. Don't underestimate the good luck of a Le Bel!
no subject
Thank you, mon ami! When my good fortune returns, I'll give you the best reward! There's so much more commoner food that I can show you once I don't have to worry about the awful dark cloud looming over my head.
[That probably isn't a good reward, but Tamaki can't think of anything better than sharing the joys of commoner food with a friend. Even if that's what got him into this mess in the first place.]
no subject
But despite that, he doesn't complain quite as much as he could if he were really upset. He does squirm and bluster with complaint, mostly because he needs the air to answer.]
You--let go of me, you fool, or we will never break this curse! It's your incomprehensible obsession with peasant food that will be our undoing if you crush me to death in your arms before I can free us!
