[The fact that they had to have councelling wasn't just disturbing, it was insulting. Here he had gone above and beyond to help Tsuzuki out of that horrible situation Muraki had put him in. If anything, he should have been given a raise, not this. It was enough to make him furious, if he hadn't already been so worn out from the ordeal.]

What?

... Are we still going to be partners after this?

I mean. [He shifts and takes a step closer, not sure what to do with his hands.]

I understand if you didn't mean what you said. I don't blame you if you want to go with someone else instead.

[That is what finally makes Hisoka turn and stare at Tsuzuki, his green eyes cold. It seems that it's not enough that he has to suffer through the indignities that their job is forcing on them, now Tsuzuki wants to spoil the only good thing that happened? He's not sure whether he's more hurt or more livid at this point.]

You idiot.

[Tsuzuki's gnawing guilt doesn't go amiss, softening some of his anger. His stupid partner is trying to shield him again. Shielding him in the stupidest way possible, but he can feel that the intention is good. He clenches his fists.]

Of course we're still partners.

[There's wetness in his eyes at that. He's still particularly fragile despite the brave face he's been adopting for his visitors. He settles down at the edge of Hisoka's bed then, hoping desperately that he won't be sent away.]

Thank you. For everything.

[Although Hisoka understands Tsuzuki's inner turmoil, it's nevertheless a forced vulnerability that puts his teeth on edge. He doesn't want to feel Tsuzuki's fragility as his own when he's this angry and raw himself.]

[He frowns, taking his partner's hand defiantly. Tsuzuki is one of those people that feels better from physical contact. He hopes this will do the trick.]

Stop saying that.

[It sounds too much like a goodbye. He makes purposeful eye contact.]

I won't let them take you away.

[He freezes, blinking. Hisoka's touching him. Voluntarily. Just like he did in the fire. Relief washes over him, and the tears spill while he clutches his partner's hand.]

You're so good -- too good-- I..

[And then he's leaning forward to kiss Hisoka's cheek, swiftly and impulsively.]

[That is too much and too soon for Hisoka, who was already upset because of their situation. He stiffens when he is kissed, and the gentler feelings he has towards his partner becomes clouded by his anxiety and embarrassment.]

What are you doing?

[It doesn't even occur to him that he's still holding onto Tsuzuki's hand. The flood of relief is too nice to let go of, just yet. A little guiltily, he squeezes his hand.]

I'm sorry!

[He settles back, cheeks darkening. Through the connection at their hands, Hisoka can probably sense his shame, but also how good it was. It would be nice if they could kiss more often. Tsuzuki hasn't been able to do it for decades now.]

I wasn't thinking.

[He can sense it, but he isn't sure what to think about it. Right now he's too close to Tsuzuki to be able to analyze his own feelings on the manner. Hisoka listens to the way Tsuzuki's emotions ebb and flow between shame and pleasure, wondering which side he's responsible for. It distracts him from the anger, although he's not really aware of it happening.]

...Idiot. Someone could have walked in.

[That simply reminds him that they're going to try to tear them apart. The counseling sounds like a excuse. He tugs on Tsuzuki's arm.]

[He responds to the tug by curling in, wrapping Hisoka in both his arms and squeezing gently.]

Then.. Maybe they'll know we have to stay partners.

[Hisoka is paranoid that nurses will show up to tear them away from each other. At least he'd be able to hold onto Tsuzuki if they stay like this, which is the reason he instinctively leans closer.]

Of course they will.

[The alternative is too terrible to consider. He lets his head drop onto Tsuzuki's shoulder, finally feeling present enough to appreciate his partner's need for intimacy.]

We'll make them understand.

Are... You sure we understand?

[He combs his fingers through his partner's fair hair.]

[At least he's not ruffling it. That would have earned him a shove. As it were, Hisoka is letting him get away with it, pretending that he doesn't notice although it's obvious that he does.]

[He doesn't know what else to say. Does Tsuzuki truly believe they should be broken up, or does he simply second-guess their partnership like everything else that he thinks about? He doesn't realize that he ends up staring at his partner without speaking, while Tsuzuki pets his hair.]

[And during the silence, Tsuzuki's thoughts scatter. Hisoka believes so much in him, but why should he? He'd been broken and useless, tried to have them both killed, should be relieved from his position. And yet Hisoka's still there. It doesn't make sense to him, but he's too afraid to push the boy away even if it's in his own best interests.]

Is... everything okay?

[It's like being caught doing something immoral. Hisoka looks away, mostly frustrated with himself. There's no reason why he should feel embarrassed about looking at his partner.]

[Stupid Tsuzuki and his guilt. It pollutes all the good feelings that flows from him, tainting them. Hisoka simply sighs, leaning back. Since he doesn't know how to explain the tainted-feelings-concerns, he grows even more frustrated with himself.]

Why wouldn't it be?

You're staring. Do you sense something?

Yes. You're giving me a headache.

Ah--

I'm sorry. [He releases Hisoka immediately.]

[WAIT NO. That wasn't what he wanted. All he wanted was for Tsuzuki to stop asking questions. He sits up straighter, as if preparing for something he doesn't even know what is.]
