[David had seldom felt less golden. A King deceived, a princess caught on the brink of disgrace - all through his own thoughtlessness. There were days, even now, when he never felt less like he belonged in the big city. Days when he never felt more like a farm boy fresh out of the fields and way out of his depth.

Jack's invitation had been taken up as a brief respite. Not that the clubs and party scene Jack frequented weren't yet another strange new world for David, but they were at least a different one. Different to court with all its politics and machinations, and with a bar well stocked enough to allow him the chance to forget the real world, if only for one night.

So David drank. He drank to take the taste of lies from his mouth. He drank because the women who crowded him and curled their perfectly manicured nails around his arms while they talked made him feel awkward and young.

He drank, maybe a glass too much.

And then the summons came. David let himself be lead into the darkness at the back of the bar to one of the few members of Silas' family with whom he did not currently feel ashamed. Jack. Jack, whose life David once thought it must be fun to have - but who never quite looked like he was having any.

He slid into the bar beside the prince.]

They're missing you, up at the bar.

[Jack's pale eyes watched David as he approached with an almost predatory intensity. It wasn't the first time he'd looked at Shiloh's beloved hero like that. All in all, he was a pretty intense person with the seemingly smooth overlap of the various masks he had to wear in public. The fierce and dedicated professional soldier who would give his life's blood for his country, the devoted and supportive son and brother. And of course the unrepentant skirt-chaser who preferred fast cars, fast women and every possible meaning of the term 'a good time'.

But then there was the other parts of himself that he had to keep hidden far away from the public eye and where had that left him? With a lover laying six feet under and a house filled with tense silence and barely leashed scorn. Jack didn't miss the cold, calculating way his father looked at him from across the breakfast table or the way his mother couldn't even seem to bring herself to glance his way. Now that his horrible, dark secret was out, they saw him for the forsaken, pathetic creature that he was.

Somehow, David didn't however. Even now, he seemed filled with that eternal optimism that Shiloh found so endearing. Never mind the fact that he was just as broken as the rest of them apparently.

At the blond's comment, Jack's lips twisted in a bitter, mirthless little smile. Even the burn of scotch couldn't drive away the ice that seemed to fill him these days.] Somehow I doubt they'll miss me that much. They seemed pretty content with you, David.

[Jack had tried to save his sister, David had come close to ruining her - in the eyes of her father, perhaps he had succeeded. Of the two of them, David wouldn't bet on himself in the contest for heroics just now. He wasn't so golden any more. Silas' eyes had lost their shine when he was reflected in them. And David was tired of feeling like a threat when all he worked for was to support the king.

And his family.]

Of course you're missed. They're all out to see you. [David may have been humouring him - and he was never so good at a smooth lie as Jack was - but it was with good intent. And if all Jack was good for tonight was a dark corner and his own thoughts, David could understand.]

But they'll get by, without either of our company.
