The night before an expedition is always a strangely celebratory affair. Perhaps because they all know that for many of their number, it will be the last happy moment in their lives, the last chance to eat and drink with some comrades who won't ever set foot in the mess hall again, the last chance to even temporarily forget of the horrors they've faced, and the ones that await them the next day.

Levi usually hates loud and rowdy crowds, which is what the night inevitably turns into, even when the ale is strictly rationed and the curfew is an hour earlier to ensure everyone is prepared for the early morning and long ride ahead. But he always ensures that he makes an appearance long enough to be noticed, sitting with his squad and listening to their usual antics.

Erwin is also there - the Survey Corps has always been more communal than the Garrison and especially the Military Police, with their rigid structures and separation of officers. Levi glances at him occasionally from across the room, gray gaze lingering a moment or two before shifting back to Petra relaying the latest news from her father's shop. Before long though, he stands, gives his customary short, eve-of-expedition rousing speech to his gathered soldiers, and then leaves them for the last hour before everyone is expected to be abed, to let them further relax without the presence of the Commander to the very end.

Ten minutes pass before Levi excuses himself, ordering Eld to ensure everyone is in their bunks on time, and then follows in Erwin's direction. It's not so unusual - their rooms are along the same hall. But instead of stopping at his own door, his feet continue until they get to the end. It's also not so unusual for him to visit Erwin at night, and it is still early, technically (although there is never really anything such as 'late' for Levi, who sleeps little and at strange hours as it is).

Still, he waits a moment, listening to confirm no one is around before he slips in without knocking, and closes the door, leaning against it. He turns the lock without looking.

Levi watches Erwin silently from across the room for several moments, quietly apprehensive. This has only become something a little more real in recent weeks, after whatever had been growing between them finally couldn't be contained any longer. But they'd both known, implicitly, that it wasn't something they could go about conducting openly. There was already some speculation about them - there always had been whispers ever since Erwin brought him in from the Underground, and they'd only increased when he'd given Levi a special rank and squad of his own. But that wasn't any reason to add more fuel to that annoying fire, or to do anything to call their judgment into question. Especially Erwin's, even though Levi knows that this new aspect of their relationship hasn't, and will never, change the way Erwin works towards his goals.

It shouldn't, anyway.

But it still feels like new territory, finding appropriate times to be together without extra suspicion. He doesn't know if Erwin will tell him to leave or ask him to stay. So he stays by the door, just in case.

"...if you get them too riled up they'll never get to sleep on time," he chides lightly from across the room.
