I can only speak for myself, but I don't see it as limiting myself. I prefer to focus on one partner, and have them focus on me, in a romantic relationship.

I'm not looking to settle down and get married yet, so if it doesn't work out then we part ways and find another partner. Or maybe partners, who knows?

It is a very good question. I believe most humans are uncomfortable with the thought of competition in their intimate relationships. They seem to invest a great deal of their identity into those relationships, so if such a relationship appears to be threatened, it seems to them very personal.

Many also desire to be unique and exceptional, not to be merely one among many. I believe that for a human to truly embrace open intimate relationships would require a great deal of confidence, or a way of relating that does not define them so much, or both.

Puritanical religious and social structures. As for why that's the case for so many cultures, it's a mix of a lot of factors, including certain religions dominating the history of Earth and popular cultural depictions that teach people that they should see sex as shameful.

So in summation, peer pressure from dead people.

There are a few theories as to why humans keep sex private.

One relates to the concept of "mama's baby, papa's maybe" in prehistoric, tribal times. If women were secretive about the father of their child, then the men of the tribe couldn't be sure it wasn't their child, and would treat them better.

Another aspect is that since human mating takes a relatively long time, doing it in private minimizes distractions and danger. Not to mention sanitation reasons -- we also go to the bathroom in private, but no one would say we're ashamed of going to the bathroom. It's just a part of being alive, but not one we need to share with the public.

If you want to be less generous about human nature, some have also theorized that it's because people don't want others to see their partner in a sexual light. The development of monogamy has a similar dark past according to this theory -- monogamy keeps males from killing children so they can mate with their mothers.

Yes, there's history of some bad actors seeking to control the populace by controlling how they feel about sex, but it's not all just "puritanical religion".

It's worth stating that humans aren't the only species that do this.

So it's not really a matter of embarrassment or shame, but simply social enforcing to keep the private and public separate.
