Also known as the Obi-Wan meme, though hopefully with less premature death.

The Mentorship Meme

I was going to have a picture here but they were all kind of...generic. You know, the older, presumably wiser figure with the naive young student.

According to wikipedia, a mentorship is...

Mentorship is a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. However, true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing ad hoc help. It is about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge.

The person in receipt of mentorship may be referred to as a protégé (male), a protégée (female), an apprentice or, in recent years, a mentee.

And knowledge is power.

  • Make a comment. Your character is now a mentor. Have fun.

  • In your top level comment post a few things your character would be...theoretically...or not...qualified to mentor in. Let's say...three? Three's a good number. Your mileage may vary so if you want to just post one? Go for it, bro, the world is your oyster, go seek your pearl.

But here's my thought. You could have one intangible personal quality such as leadership, bravery, hard work, or debauchery. You could have one practical skill your character actually knows, a specialty that they've spent time working on. And you could have one completely random ass thing that they don't really know that much about but somehow ended up mentoring in because the original mentor got drunk or something.

  • Mentees! Find a mentor! Queue up and request valuable life lessons...maybe? Ask for one, for two, or maybe all three. Start at whatever stage of this mentorship you want. If you have a setting in mind, go for that setting. If you don't, you're meeting in the closest equivalent to Starbucks you have in whatever world your characters come from.

  • And live long and prosper.

[Riding dragons was one thing, riding horses was a completely different thing all together. Of course, his father thought that it'd be a good skill to learn if they were ever going to make peace with the mainland. It wouldn't be any good to approach an alliance with people on dragonback, considering there were still those who were under the impression that dragons were dangerous beasts.

Still, Hiccup couldn't help but feel wrong on the back of a horse. He wriggled to get into the right position, before realizing that his legs were spread too far apart and more accommodated to Toothless's girth. He made a face as he squirmed around trying to get it right.]

[She'd found Hiccup and his dragon companion wandering the Dothraki sea, and although she was wary to take in strangers after what happened with the witch who killed her husband, he had a dragon, too. The world hadn't seen dragons in many, many years, and now there were four trekking across the desert.

Daenerys looks over at Hiccup, who's struggling to stay on his horse. It's important that he learns how if he wants to ride with the Dothraki. Men who can't ride are seen as weak. She can't help but smile. His struggling was sweet, and she had to sympathize a little, regardless of how much of a natural she was when she first rode her silver.]

You must not move so much, Hiccup. You will slip up and fall.

[He looked over at her when she spoke to him and smiled sheepishly, Toothless giving a small snort of amusement somewhere off to the side as he lumbered along beside his rider. Hiccup straightened himself, drawing his knees in closer to the horse's side and making sure his prosthetic was clipped into the stirrup.]

S-sorry. I'm more use to, uh, dragonback than horseback. The girth feels weird.

I can only hope one day my dragons will be as gentle to me when I ride them as Toothless is for you. I find Drogon can be particularly unruly.

[As if he's responding to her, Drogon on her shoulder blasts black smoke from his nose, proving her point.]

Drogon, no.

[Still, she tries to exhibit good form and posture so Hiccup can follow along.]

In time, you too will grow used to horses, I swear to you.
