[ Alhaitham was hardly a bleeding heart, but neither was he cruel. He simply viewed life rationally and put his own needs and desires first. There was little value in trying to save everyone. Trying would be not only futile but emotionally draining and potentially detrimental.

There were times, though, very rarely, when he would do something contrary to his principles. Giving Kaveh a place to live was one such instance, though if asked, he would provide a rational explanation, flimsy as it might be at the end of the day.

He found himself facing another such instance today as he made his way home, a young child in tow.

The kid, an orphan, had tried to steal his current read. Alhaitham could have handed them over to the matra, but it was late, and some combination of curiosity and respect had him hesitate where he otherwise would not. She had a thirst for knowledge and was clearly intelligent. It would be a waste to hand her over to the matra, which would impact her future prospects and deprive the Akademiya of someone talented.

So he took the kid home. He could always bring her to an orphanage, or foster care, tomorrow. ]
