The Darkest Timeline Meme

The Darkest Timeline.

Pick a point in your character's timeline.  What choice did they make? What choice did others make that would have changed their world?  Decide that choice, change it and go from there.  Tag others to join in on the fun.  The darker the new timeline, the better!

[Nicky – good, old Nick. Jay's heart goes out to the man. After all, without him, none of this would be possible. He makes a mental note to phone him himself, perhaps after Daisy retires, and he can stand in the doorway while gazing at her dozing figure as he tells Nick everything is fine. No, everything is perfect. With Daisy's comforting warmth against his side, things have never been better.

At her relaxed drawl, he adopts a more lively tone. One hand steers the car, and the other makes it way over her shoulder. His touch is firm but affectionate, his fingers squeezing in a way (he hopes) she finds reassuring.
]

I wish I could sweep my hand and say it's just around this next corner. That'd make you happy, wouldn't it?

[Were it possible, he would have arranged for that sea-side house to be picked up, brick by brick, rose bush by rose bush, and move ten miles closer – just so he could surprise her. A small part of him aches to know the grand Gatsby lifestyle must be put on hold.]

Sorry to say we're still an hour out. Don't tell me you're tired of my company already!

Never. [She is completely, purely earnest in her answer, nestling close when his hand finds the curve of her shoulder, her nerves somewhat placated, but not too much so as to not accept every bit of affection he can give. She will miss the house, the convenience, and the utter scale and scope of his fantastic celebrations—but she remembers all that she left behind: the scandal and death, and all that she will receive in exchange for sacrificing her luxuries: Gatsby, and a life together. She will never tire of him: romantic, lovely, gentlemanly Gatsby.

She turns her gaze upwards, adoring and full of wonder, and also childishly desperate. She wants to believe that this is what he meant when he had whispered: it will be, that his brilliant imagination will never run out of ideas, and that this will lead them into a better life. This is what she had dreamed of when he was away for those long, terrible years during the war, when she had first been swept off her feet by the charismatic soldier for one night of passion.]

It's perfect, Jay.
