The Darkest Timeline Meme

The Darkest Timeline.

Pick a point in your character's timeline.  What choice did they make? What choice did others make that would have changed their world?  Decide that choice, change it and go from there.  Tag others to join in on the fun.  The darker the new timeline, the better!

[One of the downsides to the city's deterioration was that what control over Arkham Asylum Crane actually had was weaning. An asylum had no use in a city full of lunatics. So, he had started to...expand his business somewhat. After all, a hallucinogenic like his could fetch a pretty price on the black market.

It had started getting annoying that all his customers were going insane. What part of 'buyer beware' didn't they get?

So, he was waiting in an alleyway for his 'client'-an alleyway that he was certain would be deserted. The presence of some average looking little girl threw a bit of a wrench in his plans.
]

I hope you're only passing through, [Crane calmly said, giving Jane a cold look.]

[The young woman looked at him and tilted her head. She knew the man. After all, she'd been a patient in Arkham. Before and after the madness of Jonathan Crane. But Jane (in her more lucid moments) knew her greatest asset was how unmemorable she was.

Her crimes were almost legendary. Faces beaten in, corpses burned, teeth filed away. Everything to destroy evidence that could reveal who the bpdy really belonged to.

The perpetrator, however, was forgettable. At least in her "natural" state.

She shrugged her shoulders, an almost vacant look in her eyes. Like someone who wasn't quite with it. At least not mentally.]

Don't know. Why?

[Almost like a child, with only a vague grasp of the remark without understanding the context the situation provided.]

[Crane didn't recognize the woman. Even if he did, it wouldn't matter that much to him. Arkham had plenty of lunatics, who now were out and about on the streets. He could hardly remember all of their faces.]

To put it mildly, this won't exactly be a safe alleyway to be at in- [a pause, while he checked his watch] five minutes or so.

[He said the words in an idle tone as if casually informing somebody that a road was under construction, or a store would be closing down soon. The unsafe alleyway was just a small inconvenience.] Wouldn't want you over your head.

[There were too many lunatics in Arkham. Before and after. Besides, one frequently noted for good behavior was hardly anyone's priority. Dr. Carver had been fascinated by Jane... and Jane was, perhaps, best known for having killed Carver and masqueraded as her while continuing her shifts with the inmates for three months before vanishing.

But that didn't call attention to what Jane looked like. Only what she was capable of doing. The mimicry she could pull off and the duration of the act.

At present, she looked harmless. A young woman, unarmed and alone, walking alone in Gotham. She shrugged her thin shoulders, peering at him as her posture shifted a little. A subtle adaptation to be more like his, slowly taking in the characteristics of who she was talking to.]

Never is. Gotham.
