[ The whole situation had been sketchy from the start. A young, pretty woman approaching him, claiming to be a friend of a friend, asking if he’d be able to get her something nice… but the neat stack of ration cards would have been convincing enough on their own, and Hope’s distracting charm on top of that had made him fucking stupid.

He’d always had a soft spot for blondes.

Every card had been fake. His good merchandise, wasted. The girl, vanished. A wiser, less proud man would have written it off as an expensive life lesson, but not Joel.

The quarantine zone is full of condemned buildings, shelters, a million different places to hide, but he’s pissed off and embarrassed enough to follow up on Hope. He asks around, passes along a few of those fake ration cards, and gets an address.

The apartment’s empty, but it hasn’t been for long. The remains of a pasta dinner are still on the table, dried out but not yet molding. He finds the empty bottle of champagne, an unmade bed, some fancy lingerie, but nothing to clue him in on where Hope is now, or when (if) she might be back. Joel takes some satisfaction in tearing the place apart anyway.

Tired, annoyed, ready to call it a lost cause, a sound from outside the window grabs Joel’s attention. It takes some effort, but he manages to lift the warped and swollen window up in its frame far enough that he can get his head and shoulders out.

He hears the shutter of her camera before he spots Jessica, and Joel jerks back an inch, expecting the sound to be anything but what it is. A spike of adrenaline heightens his frustration. ]
