002 ROUGHING IT | Okay there's camping and then there's stranding yourself out in the woods with nothing but a backpack, a piece of flint, and a compass. Or maybe it wasn't you're idea and you're in need of rescuing.
003 CAMPFIRE FOOD | There's nothing like food cooked over a campfire. Or maybe you're content with just stabbing a hotdog with a stick and trying not to get it too burnt?
004 FIRESIDE TALES | Something about being in the woods at night demands spooky stories told by the fire. And maybe you can wrangle someone else into helping you scare the crap out of everyone!
005 GREAT OUTDOORS | Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the wonder of being outside where light pollution is minimal, the forest sounds replace the noise of the city, and you can see the stars. Or maybe you just want to complain about all these bugs.
006 HIKING TRAILS | On foot, on horseback, or on mountain bike, these are the best way to see what there is to see. Just make sure you stay on the path.
007 PLANT IDENTIFICATION | No, those berries are totally safe to eat... right? And... hold on... is that poison ivy?
008 THE RICH LIFE | Now this is camping. An RV that costs almost as much as your house, running water, TV, AC... what do you mean that's not really camping?
009 WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS | What was that? Did you just see a fox? Or was that a bear you heard? Or maybe you're looking for something a bit easier to roast like rabbits or fish. Just watch out for snakes.
010 INCLEMENT WEATHER | How are you supposed to set up a tent when it's pouring? Did you bring enough layers for the chill? Or maybe it's just unseasonably hot and you need to go jump in the river before you pass out.
011 THE UNKNOWN | Maybe it was all the scary stories or maybe it's just the unknown sounds that come from the forest at night but you're freaked. Or maybe... Maybe it's a Wendigo.

[ Well guess who also refuses to do anything strenuous on principal... Nobody is getting a tent set up tonight. Ebenholz looked at the pieces of it in the kit and- ]

I have a migraine.

[ He has milk for blood, glass bones, paper skin, an evil ghost in his brain, etc. Good luck with all that, you brave soul. He'll uh, go find firewood? That's what you do right?

...He hasn't been outside of a city since he was 5. ]

( ooc: just to let you know, i haven't personally played through lingering echoes, but i'm familiar with the general plot beats and i believe the doctor wasn't personally involved... feel free to let me know if you think anything about this should be changed!! thank you!! )

[ The Doctor's soft on Ebenholz, in certain ways. It doesn't have anything to do with personal bias. The Doctor's just soft on everyone, particularly patients whose Oripathy manifests as voices and visions, and they never refuse to give Ebenholz shelter when he's requested shelter. Unlike Rhodes Island's other medical personnel, they've never asked him outright about the Witch King, or Graf Urtica, or Kreide. Instead, they ask him about other things, like how he's doing, what he's been eating, and if he knows that it isn't difficult to tell when he's lying.

So if Ebenholz doesn't want to bother with the tent, that's fine. He's always made his boundaries around doing nothing very clear, and the Doctor isn't interested in pushing people to be anything more than they want to be. They just sigh and pull out the poles and pegs they need to set up their tent, crouching so that they can set about doing it themselves. The strategist doesn't quite feel confident about having the necessary arm strength to secure the tent to the ground, but at least they know how to do it in theory... ]

...If you're planning to collect firewood, look for small, dry branches. Dry grasses and pieces of bark will also work for our purposes.

[ It's kind of obvious advice, but Ebenholz is something of a soft nobleman, and the Doctor doubts he's ever had to do anything like this before. Better to assume he knows nothing about the subject than run into any issues later on. ]

But don't stray too far.

[ For a variety of reasons, like the fact that Ebenholz, even with his glass bones and paper skin, is more well-equipped to defend himself than the Doctor — but they'll give him a polite excuse in that regard: ]

You wouldn't want to aggravate your migraine.

[ Not asking about it tends to having the effect of Ebenholz occasionally complaining about it piecemeal. The usually taciturn ex-count can sometimes explode into frenzied monologue. Mostly about Leithanian politics, but sometimes it gets more personal. Some things can't be expressed by music alone. ]

[ Not that he has any. The world outside moving cities is large and wild. Ebenholz wouldn't like to admit he's nervous, but he is. He paces back and forth, collecting small things nearby. He doesn't pick up that much at once, there's a practiced care in how he holds anything to try and not damage his clothing. Eventually he returns to the Doctor's side, fiddling with his fingernails.]

How are you coming along, Doctor? [ Ebenholz leans over the Doctor's shoulder to examine their work. ] Ill admit, My headache remains stagnant as long as I don't look at these instructions. I've seen antique texts less oblique...

[ To their credit, the Doctor seems to have a practiced hand at this. There's a vague rumor on the ship, if Ebenholz has ever heard it, that the Doctor used to head into the wilds by themselves to do research on Originium and how it moves through the earth, the way it moves and breathes like living tissue.

That might just be a rumor, sure, but the normally-somewhat-sleepy tactician has already set up all four tent poles and is now working on fixing the cloth coverings, and they just seem kind of used to this. How strange, that the Doctor who can barely lift a weapon should also be so... outdoorsy. ]

It's coming along. Rest a while if you need to. [ A little jerk of the head. ] There's a tree stump over there you can sit on.

[ There Ebenholz goes again, blathering about his headaches. It's sort of endearing, though. His frenzied monologues are a little fascinating, too. ]

But you can also watch, if you'd like. It might... [ What's a 'dad' thing to say here? ] ...build character.

(I’ve really been in the mood for wilderness shenanigans lately so I’m totally here for this! Feel free to roll for a prompt or I can, or just go for whatever sounds cool. I like writing starters so I can do that, too! I love horror if you’d like to go in that direction — “the unknown” prompt sounds fun.

Jamil goes to a camp in the woods for school at one point; we could run with that or something totally new.)

( there's better, warmer people to greet new faces at the campfire. even amongst his own people, there are far superior options. Rebecca is naturally soothing. Claire has a habit of making everything feel closer to normal, even though the reality is anything but. Leon is aware that his serious, stoic nature is far from comforting, even when he tries. he's not the right guy to relate to people unused to having the very fabric of their reality unraveled in front of them. he's been running on fumes a decade now, he's used to reality doing summersaults and wildly transforming into something more grotesque than he could have ever imagined. the fog is just your average Tuesday, he's used to his life being hard reset into something he never asked for.

still. Claire isn't around to hint in the right direction. the usual suspects of campfire comfort — Denson, Romero, Johannsen — are nowhere to be found. and Leon is fairly sure he's seen this face before, even if he hasn't formally introduced himself. he doesn't think they've been in a trial together yet, because strangely that would make it all easier. fighting for survival does have a tendency to bring strange bedfellows together.

he joins her at the log she's perched on, sitting close enough to make his presence known from a fairly impartial distance. he frowns a moment at the campfire. he doesn't like being too close to the fire, the hypnotic crackle of wood in a never-ending mind-numbing blaze. there's something not quite right about it, just like there's something not quite right about the strange generic offerings in the vending machines at RPD. too easy to get lost in, spiral off into places that are hard to come back from. and even though there's endless time here, Leon doesn't like to waste it.

so he shifts his attention to his company, giving her a momentary once over. it could be taken as checking her out — and technically he is. checking out how rattled she is, if she's still on edge from just returning from a trial, on a different edge waiting for the next. withdrawn, unwilling to talk, shell shocked into silence. now's not the time or the place to check someone out for any other reason. ) Want gum? ( it's a bizarre offering, but that's why Rebecca is the one known for her reassurance. )

[Koujaku is a vain bitch, so I just think the idea of him camping is funny. He probably has some skills though.]
