This meme is very simple, with only a few prompts on its own. But don't let that stop you from letting your imagination run wild, especially if you have a penchant for the tragic. Maybe it's not all bad, though. There could be a silver lining...

[ooc: if you aren't cool with M/M, I totally understand. But if you are, I'm thinking something along the lines of a mortal calvary man who still clings to the old ways loving the War God of his ancestors. Up to you if that love is answered or not.]

[ooc: I don't mind M/M actually. Your idea does sound interesting and I'd like tp play it out. I won't be able to respond quickly though as it's getting late here and I need to go to bed. But I'll be around tomorrow my time.]

He's told Arthur that he doesn't believe. Not in Arthur's one Christian god and certainly not in any other. But he's told Arthur many many things since coming into his service while still barely looking at manhood.

The truth is that Lancelot does believe. He does worship. He whispers his love and faith in a god his warrior peoples once held highly. He mutters his devotionals between cracks of lightning and he sacrifices after every battle that he's made it out alive again.

Not that he doesn't show his love of Cadeyrn in every field he charges across. When his twin swords spill blood, it's not for this land he cares nothing for, not for his Roman masters, whom he imagines turning those swords on more often than not, not even for Arthur. No. His mind boggling feats in combat are his full and complete worship of Cadeyrn. He gives himself in those moments body, mind, soul, to the song of War.

After, when the battles are over and the men mourn their dead and then celebrate another victory, Lancelot slips away. He leaves the wine and women and exultation of living another day to find his own silent corner to give thanks.

Let Arthur kneel to his god in the stables. Lancelot has the conscript's meager barracks and the small shrine he hastily erects to place the best of his rations upon to burn. His prayers in the language of his people, another militant refusal to bow to the Romans who own him. He will not speak to Cadeyrn in Latin. He will never be anything but fully himself for his god.

"My swords sang for you this day. Through me, they felt your mighty hand. I dedicate this victory to you. I dedicate myself again to you." This is the only subgigation he tolerates. He is for his God. Because the truth is that Lancelot loves the god who guided his father's father's father, who rode in the heart of every Sarmatian calvary man, whose emblem he wears as a keepsake from his childhood around his neck. Even if he's never truly seen him or heard him, (there aren't many Sarmatian tales of gods visiting mortals), Lancelot loves him. He doesn't have to see him. He's loved Cadeyrn, truly , deeply, madly, since the day his father put a sword in his hand. He'll love him until the day he dies with that same sword in hand.

"The next time it storms, I will bring you a more fitting sacrifice." Because the Romans won't question a goat going missing in a storm. Probably just wondered off and got eaten by wolves. "Have patience and know I have not forgotten the old ways. I've not forgotten you."
