guess i got my wish, guess i should have known
One day, it ended up changing completely. He had nearly died that day, sending his dead father's car off a cliff. Ever since then, he had found a way to ignore a pain, a longing, he could never understand. He ignored it by going fast, so fast that his heart raced to keep up. He also did whatever the fuck he wanted. It had felt good to tell people to kiss his ass. Felt even better to act like he didn't give a damn about anything, not even himself. Made him feel invincible. At least until there was blood. That mostly just hurt.
His friendship with Bones had curved all of that. Some. Becoming a captain of a fucking starship curved it a little more. But not so much that he stopped taking risks. Or bending protocol. He had become more responsible in a sense. He had allowed himself to care and become attached to his crew, his friends. It was incredible, how content he felt.
And to have Bones there with him through all of it? He honestly didn't know what he would have done without him. He didn't want to think about. A life without his Bones in it wasn't something he could even fathom. For all the grief he gave his CMO, his best friend, he liked to think he always made up for it. That they'd always be together. Even if it was only as friends. Jim would take that if it was all he was allowed to have and not waste it.
Like these peaceful moments off the ship, back in the city they had grown to know so well together. He takes the opportunity to sneak up on Bones from behind, grabbing his shoulders and bumping his body into his back. he tries to put on his best southern drawl (it's not very good) like he had the few times he had dared sneaking up on the doctor during their time at the academy. ]

Sorry to make you wait. Sulu kept handing me my ass at this arcade I "just had to see" and I didn't want to admit defeat to him.
[ He moves towards the front door and holds it open for the other man, ]
He is one smug bastard tonight. It's disgusting.
[ But he was still smiling, having enjoyed his time even if it ended with him getting a healthy serving of "humble pie". He frowns the next moment, though. ]
You haven't been waiting out here the whole time, have you?
