[Enji hates these parties. He hates dressing up in a suit and being subjected to small talk—or expected to give a speech for no good reason. He's not an entertainer or a socialite. The duty of a Hero is to save lives, not to attend social engagements. All the performances, galas, and televised ceremonies fill him with impatience. He could be out working instead of uselessly filling a seat or standing on a stage. He'd prefer to avoid attending these extraneous events, but apparently, his notable absence had been affecting his popularity. He doesn't care about that, but the Powers That Be care too much, and they've been making that fact known recently.

That's why he was given a partner to work with, in spite of preferring to work alone. Hawks's presence at his side was meant to make him seem more "approachable", and maybe it has. Having a partner hasn't been all bad. It's even tolerable, at times. However, Hawks is being especially insufferable tonight. His behavior, paired with the general irritation of having to attend a gala, is proving difficult to bear.

It's not that he minds that Hawks is dating someone. Of course not! It's none of his business. But Hawks doesn't have to be so obvious about it, making a display of himself while Enji is sitting right here. It makes the whole thing frustratingly difficult to ignore. He's growing more annoyed by the minute. Eyes narrowed, jaw clenched, arms crossed; he's trying his best to keep his temperature from rising. Maybe he should leave. He already fulfilled his obligation by putting in an appearance.]

[ it takes an eternity, but somewhere along the line in his string of excellent (terrible) choices, levi apparently makes a mistake. and not a small mistake, like killing the wrong human, or pissing off the reigning being in hell with his wit and charm oh no. levi goes and makes a rather giant mistake that carries with it those things called consequences that he so oft-ignored, and a complete inability to pretend that nothing was happening and everything was fine and--

okay so just because envy was his cardinal sin, that didn't mean that he wanted to be envious of others, alright? that wasn't how this worked. he was the one that inspired envy, fed off of the envy of others and wrought the chaos that came with that power. he wasn't supposed to be snapping the necks of lesser demons because they tried to do what they were told to do by someone else and take out the phoenix before she got too powerful.

for the first little while he tells himself that it is because he is bored. because madsen is the only being on that ball of dirt that is interesting to him and can actually give him the fight he wants.

then he tells himself it is because he is proving a point. the more he protects her, the more the other cardinals take note of it and push. and, well, levi fuckin' hates them anyway, why wouldn't he push back?

eventually, somewhere around him turning a human that smiled at her a little too widely to ash, he has to admit that perhaps the reason why he is doing this isn't because he is proving a point so much as he hates the thought of anyone else touching her. touching what is his.

meaning that when madsen comes home from the outing she had with the now nicely deceased individual, she will find one leviathan draped across her chair. well, his chair. he put it in her living room when his gangly limbs wouldn't fit nice enough in anything else. (she hasn't lit it on fire and that has to mean something, and not just that she knows levi would bring in an even more obnoxious one to replace it).]
