Sometimes all you need is a word to spark off an idea.
How to play -
1. Post a comment with your character's name, canon, and any preferences you may have (no shipping, no smut, etc.)
2. Leave the comment blank or post a word or two in the body. (It may also help if you list scenarios you would like to play.)
3. Reply to other people, either with words you picked out, or words they posted as prompts for a thread.

...if they were willing to talk to him anyway. or, more commonly, if he was in a situation where being seen wasn't going to compromise him. fortunately, for this circumstance, the latter was true. neither his face or his reputation should be known in the area that he was sailing, which meant that he was able to mingle among the other passengers. nothing too disruptive, of course. just some pleasantries here and there. benign conversations that amounted to nothing personal or investment. fluff.
and when the small family with young children that he had been idly chatting to had to excuse themselves as one of their children started to be fussy due to being tired, sabo took to his time finding another person. he wandered some more on the ship before arriving in the galley where he got a drink and sat himself down at the far end of one of the tables. sabo minded his own business saying nothing and just people watched, but when he was about halfway through his drink, he spoke to the person nearest to him. ]
What do you think our odds are for not running into any bad weather? It's a pretty long trip.
no subject
Why, then, has he taken to the seas? It isn't in search of freedom or resignation to his fate, but something much simpler. Curiosity, one might call it. Foolishness wrapped up in a neat little bow. To test the limits of how far he can wander before fate entombs him is something Kaeya has long wanted to test, but it took an act of impulse to board a ship bound for lands he's only heard of in books. How else will he stand a chance at escaping?
Still, he's nervous, dreadfully so, not that an ounce of that fear makes a dent in Kaeya's easy grin. He allays his nerves as he always has, a pint of cheap liquor (less than ideal) in one hand and a pleasant conversation to soothe what alcohol can't.
Sabo's question is met with a smile, pleasant as anything. The cheerful lilt of Kaeya's voice betrays none of the anxiety swirling about his mind.]
The better question is what our odds are of weathering whatever storms may come our way. Are you a strong swimmer, stranger?
no subject
You don't think that the ship will make it?
[ the rather innocent question that he gets in return in place of an answer leaves sabo wondering how best to word it. he couldn't just share with this stranger that he could swim but was no longer able to in exchange for having powers. it's not as though the abilities granted to those who have eaten a devil fruit were taboo to talk about; it's more that it's a question that could potentially set him up.
however, even though the truth of his stalling was due to trying to find the best lie to tell, sabo's eventual response (hopefully) comes across as embarrassed with a self-depreciating laugh following afterwards. the answer was truthful; no one could say that sabo told a a lie. it just lacks a number of important key points. ]
I'd say that I'm a strong swimmer conceptually given how I know the way my arms and legs should move, but in practice I'm more like a hammer. It's kind of embarrassing.
[ not wanting to let that linger too long, sabo takes a sip of his drink and replaces his embarrassment with a smile and a purposefully obvious redirection. ]
How about yourself? Are you looking for company in the poor swimmer's club?
no subject
He really shouldn't be here. Kaeya can't help but feel like this man knows it too, and yet he knows his nerves are to blame for this anxious feeling deep in his gut. Ignore it. Endure it. Everything is fine.]
Conceptually, hm? What an interesting answer!
[And it's not like Kaeya is calling Sabo out! ...But he is, kinda sorta. Curious. What he takes from Sabo's answer is that this "friendship" of theirs will sink along with the ship. After all, you can't teach a hammer how to swim.
All the same, Kaeya's words are prefaced with an amicable chuckle, taking a sip from his glass. If nothing else, he's thankful the liquor on this ship is as strong as it comes.]
Haha! Who knows? [Tit for tat, motherfucker. He can give dubious answers too. Still... he'll throw Sabo a bone.] I've the means to survive a sinking ship. I've done it once or twice in the past, you see... but if you're searching for salvation, you may want to keep looking.

It's the truth; a rather unflattering truth.
[ sabo repeats while laughing at his own misfortune and is far more interested in having that be the last thing that he will have to clarify about that. after all, while sabo's plenty certain that there aren't ears who might be interested in this weakness of his, there shouldn't be any kind of fanfare around it. not to mention, the answer he gets is far more interesting than someone's inability to swim.
this is twice now that sabo's gotten a response that's a bit different than what he had become accustomed to. ]
However, I wonder if it's me who should worry about needing salvation now. What does it say about someone's luck to have experienced a sinking ship twice? [ and before kaeya can have a moment to consider if sabo's saying this as some sort of polite way of insulting him or other passive-aggressive remark, he'll raise his pint up into the air as to toast kaeya. the smile on his face bright and eyes earnest. ] I consider myself lucky to have survived one. Clearly someone favors you.
[ and with that he'll take a drink. kaeya's welcomed to join him or not. it won't matter too much for sabo in the end (but he most likely will, let's be honest with ourselves). ]
no subject
You think so? I wonder! If you ask me, it's simply dumb luck that I remain among the living.
[And he does have to wonder why, but he won't trouble Sabo with his navel gazing. He won't trouble anyone with it. Kaeya is more inclined to drown out those worries with alcohol, but with an awareness that this man isn't as dull as the other men on this boat, he's pacing himself. No need to run the risk of Sabo calling him out for drinking like it's going out of style.]
But I'm speaking purely in metaphor. You've experienced the real thing, hm...? [Kaeya meets his toast with an effortless smile, clinking their glasses together.] What a harrowing experience!
no subject
[ and sabo doesn't make a remark about how it had been a metaphor and simply makes a mental note of it. he does consider whether or not he should entertain kaeya with more details about his "harrowing" experience, but the answer is easy enough. it would be a shame if the conversation was cut short due to sabo's more typical reservations. ]
As for my experience, fortunately I don't remember too much of what happened. I was very young when it occurred so I only have memories of things here and there.
[ ...some of which was the truth at one point in sabo's life. ]
no subject
[Is Kaeya ribbing him? Yes, and he's ribbing him just a little harder than he would most, but this is a man he's unlikely to see again. He can afford to press when the risk of consequence is so minimal, tipping back in his seat to rudely kick his feet up onto the table, one leg crossed over the other. Kaeya would never do such a thing back home, but it's worth seeing what buttons he can push while he's been afforded the opportunity to do just that.]
You must remember some of the details. Why bring it up if there isn't an equally interesting story tied to the experience?
no subject
I wouldn't consider it an interesting story myself but—
[ "traumatic" is a word that could fit in the space that sabo leaves, but he doesn't end up saying it. instead he takes the opportunity to use the hesitation to make the final decision. lie or tell the truth. ]
Some of the memories that I have are of exploding ship planks going up in flames, the smell of smoke around me, and a desire to see someone again.
[ is this what kaeya wanted? sabo makes sure to not sound too dramatic or make a big deal of what he ended up sharing. the last thing that he wanted was to start souring the mood that they were creating. most of all, it wasn't as though these memories were overly sharing anything too important to him.
well, perhaps the last one but that could remain being a vague detail. ]
no subject
Oh dear... What a traumatic experience. Perhaps it's for the best that you don't recount the finer details.
[Unless he does, but Kaeya's heard enough. The way Sabo has chosen to answer says more than the answer itself, which is exactly what Kaeya was hoping for.]
Still, you hold yourself quite well for a man who has endured such tragedy... rather, you haven't reached the point of drinking like a fish to quell your woes. How many glasses deep are you, hm? I could go for another myself.
[He's not saying he'd like to pry more info out of Sabo with alcohol, buuut he also isn't saying he wouldn't? Color Kaeya curious. There are worse people to catch the attention of, probably.]
no subject
[ the latter claim is nothing but an outrageous lie. his partner would have plenty of words and examples of the exact opposite, but she is not here. (thankfully.) but on the hopes that with the way that sabo so casually and confidently carries himself it might be easy to believe that what he says is the truth.
and before he entertains kaeya's "subtle" invitation to have a(nother) drink (with a possible ulterior motive attached), he'll take a moment to down the rest of it. there was about half of the glass was left; so, nothing impressive for anyone who has some experience drinking. obviously he didn't have to do that but there was also no harm in it either. sabo might not party like a pirate but he still occasionally mingled with them. ]
Three now. [ then with a smirk, he'll add: ] Does this mean that you're offering to pay for the next one?
