Lost in the wilds: Turns out that person who thought they knew how to find the polestar was following a firefly. Now what?
Quest for the Artifact: You're out here looking for some kind of magical item. Ring? Chalice? Rat tail? Whatever. It's just important that you find it, for reasons.
CLERIC! Someone's hurt! Is there a cleric in the house?! A potion? Anything?
The Tavern: It's time to eat, drink, and be merry! Or time to occupy the shadowy table in the corner. Or fight over who has dibs to the shadowy table in the corner.
Quest Board: You've run into someone at the town's Big Board o' Odd Fantasy Jobs to do! Take up something together, maybe? Or just commentate on the jobs on offer?
Werewolf! There, wolf! looks like you're getting a monster encounter whether you wanted one or not.
Your pentagram was crooked: Either a demon was summoned, or it WASN'T summoned and something else turned up instead. Whether it was your fault or not, you've gotta deal with it.
Having a ball: Kick up your heels, maybe kick them off. Adventure time is over, now it's time to get FANCY.
DRAGON. there's a dragon. all the details are up to you.

[Just your average retired adventurer turned barkeep. He knows more than he should about a great many things, but it's usually used for the greater good these days.

And as we all know, something always happens to pull guys like this out of retirement, that's just the way it goes.]

[His mother was a fire genasi, his father was an orc warlord, and here he is, just trying to make his way in the world. He sort of fell into being a ranger, it's generally solitary work, but he doesn't mind it.

He's pale enough to be a sort of seasick green at all times, though in the low light of a tavern, mostly covered up, it's less easy to tell, and his shock of red hair is carefully, skillfully braided back away from his face both to keep it out of his way and to keep his horns hidden. He's definitely half something, but there's a lot of half-somethings around, one more isn't going to gain that much notice.

Unless his reputation has gotten here first...]

[This little dude is definitely some kind of gnome or goblin artificer type. Either he's working out of the back room of a tavern and he'll fix what people bring him if they buy him a drink, or he's got a little workshop somewhere.

He might even be part of an adventuring party, those people always need stuff fixed.]

[He's well-suited to option 9, because he's not actually a demon and is at best a minor concubus, and yet somehow he manages to get summoned by amateurs more often than should really be possible.]

[He's a member of the Companions Guild, which sounds like a euphemism (and in many cases is, Gabreel's got a rate chart for that and may well have an arrangement with a tavern owner to use the place and one of the rooms as a base of operation for a cut of his profits) but is generally just an offshoot/sister Guild to any sort of Thieves Guild, in that you hire a Companion when your heist team/adventuring party is down a member and you need short-term help.

Also useful for people traveling alone who just want someone to talk to/share watch duty on the road between point A and point B.]

[Just your usual wandering bard, earning himself a few coins, a room for the night, or a caravan to travel with. He's good at what he does and that's even without tapping into what his mother gave him by dint of being an actual for-real Siren of the Deeps.

His father was a charming sailor who managed to get out of that situation intact, and Henry's got more than a little of that to him, too.]

[She's a Thief, and a good one, while it's difficult to say how someone with one clearly tiefling parent ended up barely topping out at five foot even, not counting the pouf of curls, she clearly did.

She might be on a job, looking for a job, or looking for a caravan to join for the next leg of her trip, she might just be having a night off, there's lots of possibilities.]
