Zane's shoulders shift and tense and relax, and he cants his head, subtly, to allow the Emperor to continue. He never knew his hunger for touch like this until it awakened. And the obvious power in the Emperor, the way he moves and speaks, leaves Zane oddly comfortable. The Emperor's world is far out of Zane's reach, as is the Emperor's power, and he has no true need to fight it.

So he doesn't.

It is, somehow, a relief of pressure.

"I didn't know air has pressure," he says. It is an encouragement to keep speaking, but mostly it's a way for Zane to expand his understanding of the world around him.

"It does. Air has substance, it's just incredibly thin compared to liquids or solids. Think about it: if there wasn't anything in air, you wouldn't need to breathe."

His fingers slide up into Zane's hair briefly, then withdraw, and he rests his arm on the back of the couch.

"You don't feel it because barring extraordinary circumstances, the pressure is very nearly the same everywhere on the surface of a given planet. The particles in air all always moving a little bit, and they move more from high pressure to low pressure, which keeps them evenly spread out."

Zane is abruptly bereft, and dislikes, suddenly, that he is so deprived. Punishment, perhaps, for not relenting to the Emperor's grip when the suggestion was made?

"They want to stay even," he says. He is listening.

"Precisely.
