Judgement Day has come.  The machines have taken over.  Perhaps they are controlled by an AI.  Perhaps there are flesh fairs in the forest.  Perhaps humanity is slowly being crushed by an errant bit of hardware.  In any case, the machines are in charge now.  Are you man or machine?

[In retrospect, that probably could have probably been handled better.]

[David Harris, callow recruit and all of sixteen years old, is now officially a deserter to the Resistance. And no harmless deserter either - running through the woods, the no man's land between the territories controlled by the Machine Empire and the rebel enclave that so far has managed to hold out against them, he carries with him a piece of technology the Royal House would do anything to get their hands on.]

[And yet, despite what he's done, David doesn't consider himself a traitor. Even though he slipped away from his squad, used his ability to get into the restricted section of the base and then impersonated an officer to bluff his way out with the Escafil Device. As far as he's concerned, David's just taking back what was his to begin with. After all, he was the one who found the Device. And why should he fight and maybe die on someone else's say so? He's not an idiot.]

[Looking over his shoulder as he runs, boots squelching in the mud, David wipes a sheen of sweat from his brow. He'd been training to be a Ranger, like the rest of the squad, but even a fit sixteen-year old can only run for so long.]

[The outpost that Adora's come across is tiny, even by Resistance standards. It was once a root cellar for the destroyed house above. What little wallspace isn't covered in shelves of supplies have clotheslines stretched across as dividers. Whoever lives here doesn't stand a chance if the machines find them.]

[A woman stands near the entrance, dressed in a smudged and soot-stained set of robes. There's a distinct sheen of sweat on her brow. She offers a hand and a crooked little smile in greeting.]

Thank the Light, somebody else. You've the first living thing I've seen in weeks.

*It had been a day ago that Sakuya had finished her job dealing with a particularly stubborn resistance camp. Even her powers of manipulating time had been harried to their limit by the traps and spells of the agents inside. In the end, however, she'd been able to capture the mages of the tower and bring them in for processing.

One of the results now stood in front of Sakuya. Rita Mordio had been the best mage of the group - and so, with her skeleton beginning to be transformed by nanotechnology and her mind vulnerable, it fell to Sakuya, as a sort of "gift" from her masters, to use any means she wished to recalibrate the mage's loyalties - preferably leaving her mind and talents intact.

Right now, of course, her arms and legs were bound, a chain holding her standing. She gazed defiantly at Sakuya.*

So. Here to torture me?
