A staple of every horror movie. The killer is closing in, the seconds are counting down, and all that's left is for you to make a break for it and hope for the best.
If you escape, celebrate while you can. Because when they finally catch you... Well, we'll leave that up to you.
Maybe they'll sink their teeth into you. Maybe they'll drag you back to their basement. Or maybe this is all just one big misunderstanding...
How to Play — Leave a top-level comment with which role you'd like for your character — chaser or chasee. — Reply to others and decide on how you want to play it. Since action memes can be a little tricky, it might help if you choose whether you'd like for the chasee to escape or be captured prior to threading. — Run.
where...
through the house - Your home doesn't feel much like your home anymore. It feels like a maze. So much for your sense of security...
through the woods - The most precarious option. There are plenty of things to trip over if you aren't mindful. Watch out for that twig!
through the city - Passing by building after building, banging on doors and screaming at strangers. Why is no one helping you?
through the graveyard - Don't trip over a headstone if you know what's good for you.
through a dreamscape - Walls are moving, floors are falling away. Nothing about this world makes sense... you must be dreaming.
through a funhouse - Hall of Mirrors? Tunnel of Love? Through the big top?
dealer's choice - Wherever your hammering heart desires!
by...
a killer - They want you dead. You want to stay alive. Clearly, the two of you are at an impasse.
a monster - Werewolf? Vampire? Ghoul? Goblin? Take your pick, and link some images so we can know what we're up against.
a ghost - A little unfair. How are you supposed to run from something you can't see?!
a devil in disguise - They say they want to help, but you know the truth, and you're not taking chances.
a helpful citizen - They genuinely just want to help, believe it or not. Why are you running?!
the unknown - You can't tell what it is you're running from, but you know it isn't good.
dealer's choice - Whatever brand of creep you want!
{{Either role, depending on your perspective. If he's being chased, it's probably because he's here to hunt whatever monster has taken up residence here. If he's chasing, he's either hunting said monstrous being or a human interloper in the closely guarded territory of the Wolf School witchers.}}
[Trees trees trees. So many trees. Mia loves being sent to the middle of the dark woods over and over again. Variety? Who needs it. She sure doesn’t. (No please why do all these places have so many trees everywhere she really hates it.)
But at least this time her surroundings are familiar. She’s been here before - this course, this sandbox. Whatever they want to call it. The canopy of trees overhead makes it even more striking when beams of moonlight manage to seep through to the forest floor. It’s easier to spot the generator floodlights blinking lazily in the distance too.
There’s the mines. The warehouse. Everything so old and rundown. Yeah - she’s been here, done a decent amount of exploring and hiding out. Probably died once. It’s tough to keep track.
She doesn’t like it when she blinks into one of these trials alone. Having a partner (not including the unwelcome one taking up residence inside her body) to start with, regardless of who it is, helps calm her nerves somewhat. But she’s by herself here so the first things she decides upon: head towards the nearest generator, make sure to stick to the shadows and flatten against the skeletal remains of walls of brick and wood scattered across the land. Keep eyes and ears open for any signs of life nearby, anyone she can possibly creep up to.]
Mia would apologize if she could. But she hadn't been feeling well in the days leading up to this and before anyone knew it the annoying pest had managed to pull a fast one on her. Swapped seats. Time for chaos. It gets bored, tries flexing its muscles to see if it still can. She's still not as vigilant as she should be. A work in progress, you see.
Shit happens. It's an easy fix. He's done it numerous times. If he can wrangle her and pummel her backseat driver into submission. Routine!
Just have to find her first. Before she finds him. :3]
[Geeze, stop trying to kill him Mia, that'd be sweet!
Ash is smart enough to press himself against the wall and winch his fingertips around the corner of the mirror. The plan is get the mirror down, squash her to the floor with it, and magic words the real Mia back into the driver's seat, right? Eeasy peasy. And it helps that Deadites never shut up so he can kind of tell where she is.
[The thing about mirrors is they're so easy to play tricks with. Piece of cake. It knows what scares him, the things that send him spiraling. If Ashley thinks he's catching his reflections acting a bit off in his peripherals - he is correct. Besides the girl's preoccupied vessel of a body slinking about in nearest shadows, he isn't alone. And if he isn't careful, he'll be grabbed by himself.]
[Mirrors have never been Ash's lucky suit. He's aware of that. And he's almost annoyed when his giggling reflections stop following his exact gestures. Really? The forces of hell are gonna do this to him again?!]
Oh come on, not this shit...
[He's cut off as rows of Ashes break glass and lunge at him. Fortunately he knows how to run very quickly by now.]
The way the mirrors are positioned and the light reflects off of them make it seem like the room goes on forever. A seemingly infinite amount of pathways and panels and Ashleys and quite possibly Mias as well. But the shadows keep shifting and moving, spooky sounds echoing so loud before tapering off to nothing.
Rinse, repeat.
Then the deafening crash of so many sheets of glass shattering one after another right down the line following him as he attempts to dash out of the way. His mirror twins (siblings? clones? there are so many of them) pounce, but they dissipate nearly as quickly as they appeared. They never touch him, only get close enough to tease. But the shards of glass are real, sharpened edges scraping and cutting from being blown out with such force before withering to the floor.
When he reaches the end of the winding and never-ending passageway, only one twin remains between him and the door marked EXIT up above the frame. Except it doesn't look like him. It's Mia, quiet and somber, eyes lidded and focused downward, looking untouched by Deadite influence but more translucent than a ghost.]
[Oh not EVERY time, Mia. I mean come on, he's not that big of an idiot yet. Someone would call this metaphorical - the many versions of him and her haunting them both
At this point he's so used to getting cut up by this crap he can shake off the glass, letting the minor wounds bleed. There'll be time, later, to care for them. Ash isn't dumb enough to fall for that. But he pauses and tilts his head and stares at this version of Mia. The unreality of her is just fascinating enough to warrant his stare.]
You'd know. Queen of the spooks.
[The fact that he can see right through her is somehow less scary. Means it's probably a projection. Shit, are Deadites evolving Jedi powers now? He keeps enough of a distance, and an eye on his circumstances. As much as he can, anyway.]

[either role. he's used to running from demons... or chasing after suspects. 1920s style detective style with a lovecraftian horror twist. have at him.]
Rude had no idea why the higher-ups wanted this particular artifact but asking questions wasn't in his job description. And so he didn't. For once this was a solo mission, and oddly enough he found himself missing his partner's chatter. Well, no use thinking about that, better to focus on the task at hand. He had gotten a tip that there was someone else after the same artifact and right now Rude was gathering intel and trying to make a plan if it was better to beat them to it, or let them do the hard work and retrieve it and then steal it from them later.
He likes the sound of the second option better. A quick call to Tseng and he had gotten everything ShinRa had on this "Felix" and admittedly it wasn't much. Which was enough to make Rude's skin crawl. He preferred having all the facts. He had tracked down a lead of where the guy should be staying in town and right now Rude was blending in with the locals, rather than in his normal suit, and just observing if the lead was right.
It was worth a lot of money, and Felix honestly didn't give much of a shit of anything else about this job. All he had to do was find and retrieve an alien artifact. Simple, easy. Get it done, get paid. He liked that last part the best. Now he just had to get to that point.
Things were hardly ever that simple in practice. Fortunately, Felix liked the challenge. Unfortunately, he hated being alone not having backup. It was fine. He'd done plenty of jobs on his own. It wouldn't even take that long. Probably.
The hang up came earlier in the job at least. Some asshole reneged on their deal with him and Felix had to put them in their place. It wasted time. He had been going to give the guy a pass for getting him the info he needed, but then the little shit had tried to extort him. Turned out to be that guy's loss. He could have been paid; instead he was dead.
Felix left the building without glancing backward. It's not like it was the first time he'd left a dead man in a room on his way out. It's not like anyone would ever figure it out before he was long gone. He took his intel and walked merrily down the street, a tuneless whistle on his lips.
Rude frowned as he spotted Felix. Something was off and the Turk could not quite place his finger on what. Just some feeling eating at his inside. But Rude had been in this game long enough to learn to listen to that feeling. That feeling had kept him alive more times than he could count. If anything feels off, you pause and you reconsider the options. That was the standard operating procedure on missions like this, where Rude didn't have the backup he was used to.
But on the other hand, Felix was a good lead. So instead of doing what he should be doing he got up, following Felix at a safe distance. At least the whistle made it easy to follow the merc, and there were enough crowds that it was not entirely unreasonable that he was walking in the same direction.
For being a rather large and imposing figure, Rude was good at blending in and going unnoticed when he wanted to. Civilian clothing helped with that. He did love the Turk suit, but it did stand out, and so the only thing he had kept was the sunglasses.
He kept the surveillance up for a few days before he decided to make his next move. By now he was pretty sure Felix was his ticket to the artifact and Rude needed better eyes on him. He has figured out how he wanted to attack this; wait for Felix to get the artifact, then before he can get off world or ideally even leave the city, stop him and take the artifact. But for that, he needed to know exactly when Felix was making his move.
So, one day while Felix is out, Rude grabbed his lockpicks, making short work of the door. Bugging a room was something he had done before and he worked efficiently while also making sure to look over any personal effects Felix had left behind.
[ Have a tall monster lady who makes strange bird noises, a murder of aggressive crows at her beck and call, and supernatural ink not-hands chasing you around. ]
( definitely the chaser, but if you can come up with a good reason for the eldritch shadow monster to run from someone, i am all ears! like, on the one hand, he's too arrogant to choose retreat most of the time, but on the other it would be incredibly funny for him to run away on his short little boy legs, fail, and absolutely eat shit. It's What He Deserves. )
[ Prefer PvE with your character being chased with mine and the pursuer being an NPC (which I don't mind writing). No escort missions (helpless characters) unless previous CR or discussed first, please. ]

Funhouse, and here we go
Which is why he wishes they didn't end up in a freaking hall of mirrors. Especially when Mia's little visitor has gone squirrel chewer.
It's always fun when he has to run for his life at high speed. He ducks behind an elaborate red-rimmed mirror and waits this out.
A bonk on the head plus the usual burial and exorcism should solve this. He thinks. He hopes.]
