Dear Mr. Jonah Magnus,

I shan’t pretend that I am a man of any importance to your work, but testimonies and not least, experiences have come into my possession that I feel I cannot rightly entrust to anyone within the narrow boundaries of my own homeland at current time. In certain fields, Denmark is still hobbling inelegantly behind her greater siblings, although mine be the shame, should anyone hear me utter such traitorous words.

My name is Erik Bertelsen, graduate of Copenhagen University, cand.theol. and currently assisting minister in a small town in Jutland that I shall save you the expectation of knowing, as I, myself, only learned of its existence upon hearing of their relevant job vacancy. At writing moment, I find myself back in Copenhagen, for reasons significant to the matter at hand, on which we shall touch in a second, but I believe that I will do better to enclose my Hølling address, so that you may contact me directly there. If all goes well, I will be returning to Jutland in a day or two.

What has driven me to reach out to you, Mr. Magnus, is the very sensitive knowledge I have discovered that a demon, or so I believe, has taken residence in the church where I work. Perhaps you are now thinking, why would a man of the church seek help for such a problem in the secular world, the church has its own demonologists and exorcists, let the church deal with its own – a logical and correct conclusion that speaks well of your intellect, but the issue here is that I do not believe this is a demon of any Christian nature. That is to say, I do not believe this demon origins with the world order that my God has created and all measures I have personally taken to drive it away, Christian measures, I assure you, have been unsuccessful.

Thus, I am asking respectfully yet desperately for your guidance in this matter, so that no one else might get hurt and I can return to using our House of the Lord as it was so intended. For worship of the Almighty. Undisturbed.

I hope that by the time this reply finds you, the situation you have described has not escalated beyond anything within your capacity to manage. I must say I was surprised to receive such a request from a minister, especially from this far afield, and I do hope that this speaks to your need for a solution rather than any desire to make light of my work from a safe distance.

Although much of my research is theoretical, I have received and studied many instances of supposed entities that do not seem to align with the Christian understanding of such things. With these in mind, I must first ask you: What is the nature of this occupation? I am greatly curious as to the events that have led you to your certainty that it is, in fact, a malevolent entity taking up residence in your church. You refer to no one 'else' being hurt. What has happened?

A detailed account of events at the church leading up to your decision to write to me will greatly help me in aiding you, or, at the very least, offering what knowledge I have. Additionally, I am curious as to how you came to know of my Institute — one of my contacts within Copenhagen University, perhaps?

May this letter find you safe. In anticipation of your reply, I will presently track down what information I can find in relation to Hølling and what I understand thus far of your current problem.

Dear Mr. Magnus,

A mentor of mine, Pastor Gustav Schmidt of Trinitatis Church, takes an interest in what he calls the "Spiritual Matters" and he is well-acquainted with the scholars at Copenhagen University who share his ideas. One of them, upon a discreet mention of my problem, though by no means the full extent of it, brought up your name and I myself could research the rest, finding immediately great comfort in knowing that such an expert existed outside the Church. Making light of your work would not be my objective in any reality, not even one in which I had nothing to lose on doing so. I consider myself a gentleman and humble of nature at that, knowledge is in no shape or form something to be scoffed at, would be my honest answer.

You ask for a detailed account and I have written one such for you, describing the events that led me back to Copenhagen and are now again making my stay in Hølling quite troublesome.

I have worked as an assisting minister in this town for well over half a year now. It was a couple of months, no, I believe, precisely seven weeks after my arrival, that the demon first made itself known to me, though I am afraid that so far, no one else has discovered its true nature. It is visible only to my eyes. How do I know this? I shall explain...

Seven weeks into my stay here, I was asked to lead the sermon for the first time. Pastor Frost who is head minister had fallen ill and I had to very quickly prepare my material for the following Sunday. It was Quinquagesima Sunday, everyone was preparing for Lent. As I was reciting and before asking the parishioners to gather for Communion, a wind was felt through the church and everything turned icy cold. People were visible freezing, though I carried on as if nothing had happened. That is when suddenly the oldest child of a local farmer stood up and started speaking in tongues. Normally, in the environment of a town such as Hølling, I would expect people to react to this with either disbelief or deep reverence, but no one seemed to notice. The boy was looking right at me while he spoke words that only seemed vaguely coherent. I remember catching terms like "rotten orange" and "cane sugar", but other than that it sounded like gibberish. I, naturally, stopped reciting my sermon, but after a minute someone cleared their throat and asked me to carry on. The boy had sat down, seemingly untouched by this event. I carried on, shaken, yet when I carefully asked the church goers about it at coffee afterwards, no one knew to what I was referring. As if meant for my eyes only.

Well, a month passed where nothing more happened, so I managed to calm myself and wave it off as a singular, strange event, though naturally a part of me was wondering if this was a sign from the Lord and what that sign, in that case, might mean. What a Christian and what a minister I would be, if I had not! One Saturday evening, I had been asked to decorate the church room for the following Sunday, as a small girl was getting Christened and I was walking around the altar, decorating with greenery when again, that wind blew through the room, blowing out all the candles and leaving me in pitch darkness, aside from the moonlight outside shining down on the altar. That was when, and you must believe me, the etching of Christ on the altar turned his head and began speaking in tongues, like the boy had done before. Again, "rotten orange" and "sugar cane" but this time also "fire" and "cloudburst". I blinked and in that second, Christ's figure turned his head back in its original place, the candles alit once more and I stood, trembling, with ferns between my hands.

Finally, two Sundays ago, I was to lead sermon again due to Pastor Frost's absence from town for a week's travel. Once more, I took the pulpit and once more, that wind blew through the room. The same boy from the first Sunday stood up, but this time did not speak, rather running down the aisle and throwing open the front doors, before tumbling down the steep flight of stairs leading to them. He screamed and he yelled and not until I - all the way inside the church - heard a loud snap, no one reacted. Only then, his mother came running too, screaming in panic and his father... They found the young boy dead in front of the church, but had no knowledge of how he came to be there. No one had seen, except me. No one had felt the wind. That blasted wind!

After heading the funeral a couple of days later, I began taking measures to rid the church of the evil presence, but nothing of what I knew worked. I was at a loss, so I left town as soon as Pastor Frost was back, returning to Copenhagen to study these matters in depth myself, but I can safely say, now that I have returned, none of my rituals work. And nothing new has happened since.

Though, I fear... I fear it may be tied to me. That is the reason I am desperate for your help, Mr. Magnus.

[ I'm canonblind but after some googling I'm intrigued!! this version of Jonah is early on in his eye-ing but starting to tip further off the deep end, so crossing paths with someone like Jade totally works if you'd like to AU him in! ]
