The opulence of the palace was hard to ignore. Actually, it was starting to give Astrid a little bit of a headache. But a job was a job. And as long as she managed to check the long string of snide remarks threatening to bubble up out of her like a fountain, she was looking forward to a hot meal and a bed without fleas. So she would endure the headache. She'd endured far worse before.

Far, far worse.

Fortunately, the nobility seemed to have no interest or taste when it came to music, so she could play what she wanted. And the more they ignored her, swirling around the room in their perfumes and silks, the more free she felt to begin getting...creative.

At first, she played old standards. And then when she got bored, she started to play them backwards. Just to see if anyone noticed.

No one did.

Finally, hiding a smirk by letting her hair drape along the side of her face, she started to play a Fjerdan child's play song, dressed up in dazzling frills and improvisations so it would pass for impressive. As long as one didn't take into account the fact that it was about mermaids and lanterns. Or that it was Fjerdan.

Zoya Nazyalensky was the queen of the Little Palace. Or at least she liked to think so. She strove to please her teachers as much as she'd striven to please her mother and she was the top of the class. She liked to think that she had a certain amount of sway. Friends. Colleagues. Even lovers, though they never lasted for long. None of them had ever touched her heart. Not in the way he had. General Kirigan. Their leader. The only man who had consistently made her heart beat faster. The one untouchable man in the Little Palace.

And there he was again, in the black kafta that meant he stood apart from the crowd. The party was a boring thing and she had done the rounds and had been planning to leave. But... But she couldn't seem to stop herself from watching him.

Until she realized that his head had suddenly turned her way and he was watching her back.

Her heart twisted in dismay at having been caught in the act, but her back stiffened and her chin lifted. So she'd been caught watching him. He was a good-looking man and she wouldn't be the first person to look. But she refused to be embarrassed at being caught.

So she met his eyes and smiled. Not flirting, just acknowledging that he'd caught her. Even if her heart was pounding in her chest, she wouldn't let anyone make her feel lesser than. Not even him.

The fetes at the Grand Palace were always too-filled with tension, political chicanery, and thinly-veiled insults that inevitably set his teeth to grinding and his head to aching. Yet, protocol demanded he attend, and so he always did, hating every bloody second of it.

However, gatherings at the Little Palace, his dominion, were always lighter, more festive, and relaxed, with a general happy air that all enjoyed, where the food was plentiful (and not poisoned), the music worthy of the revel, and the Grisha all able to be themselves, not the perfect, polished soldiers they were forced to be for the nobility.

And he moved among them with ease, a dark swath in a sea of vibrant, bright colors. It soothed his nerves, calmed his demons. Yes, he belonged here. Though they still gave him a wide berth - and were correct to do so - the Darkling threaded through his Grisha like the shadows that he commanded, acknowledging greetings and giving rote responses when required.

As usual, he ended up taking station near the throng, but never a part of it, nursing hot tea in a wineglass, for he would not inebriate himself in such a public venue. Always observant, dark gaze missing little, it wasn't much of a surprise when he felt the weight of eyes on him, and not the typical fleeting or wary glance. Lifting his lashes, one sharp eyebrow slowly rising, he located his target, across the ballroom and staring directly at him.

Ah, yes. He recognized her. Zoya Nazyalensky. One of his prodigies. Excellent Squaller, keen literaturist, multi-lingual, and optimally suited for a number of duties. And a social climber, if his reports were correct. And considering the smile she was currently offering him, along with that bold gaze, Kirigan had little doubt of the latter. Well, then.

His moods were horribly mercurial, swinging from one to the next in the space of a breath, but she had caught him feeling a bit...playful. Curious. Colored him intrigued. Thus he held her gaze, his own dark eyes not a bit shy, and took a sip from his glass, a little coy. Lowering the goblet, the Darkling pointedly licked his lips, slightly ducked his chin, and canted his head in invitation: Come here.

The General didn't dally. That was the gossip. He didn't take lovers and, if he did, it was a well-guarded secret. His lovers didn't kiss and tell. And maybe that meant he had none and maybe that meant he sent them away or they just didn't talk. But any way you looked at it, it gave her no known path to follow. Did he simply wish to talk? Her own judgement of men said not. But what would it mean if she assumed he didn't and he did? Or the reverse? The one thing she did know was that if she stayed and continued to weigh her options, she would never find out.

So she walked in his direction, smoothly picking up a glass on her way and taking her own sip, keeping her eyes on him. She stopped in front of him, closer than she might otherwise have dared. Close enough that she could feel the heat of her body without making it appear improper. If anything would come from people observing their exchange, it was that she was in the General's confidence, not that she was making eyes at him.

"General," she said, without giving him the deference she might otherwise have given, "you wanted to see me?"

She wasn't his equal, but she also refused to be intimidated by his strength. It was an awesome power and that awe was the thing she had to take pains to hide, not fear. She was impressed by him. But she also had no intention of being walked over.

She imagined for one terrible and terrific moment what it would be like to be held within the power of him instead of simply watching it. To be the sole focus of him for however long the moment lasted. It was a heady thought and she smiled a private smile, maybe a little sad. She wanted to be more than a pawn in someone's game. Wanted to be more than just another soldier. But she'd never found someone who needed her. And she suspected General Kirigan needed nobody.
