( shigure is a filthy smut writer with his dirty little novels, stacks of tightly-bound paper-backs displayed with their glossy luridly-illustrated covers in shop windows, that sometimes she glances through the dark-tinted windows of the car that chauffeurs her around the outside world, categorized under, of all genres, romances. the man doesn't know romance, does not have a single hint of love in him, not since a quiet boy in a damp garden of violet and pale hydrangeas and bare maple tees cradled her in his arms when she wept, and all of once, presented her with a scarlet camellia flower and an oath. a promise that he has forgotten over the years, feigning deafness when she brings up the sore subject or acting as if it is yet another dream she has conjured, out of nothing but lavender slumberless nights and ancient hazed nightmares. shigure is not a romantic, although he sometimes may play the part of the fool — but truly, he is cruel and cunning.

akito overhears him, by what ought to be dismissed as pure happenstance, a mere coincidence, but then why did he choose the telephone so close to her quarters, with its olive-green mechanical body and round rotary dial, as if a ghastly frog, its slick coil of wire around his heavy fingers. fingers still smudged with grey graphite and dark ink, from his newest work, the copy he had brought to her prior to publication — akito had not yet even thumbed through the pages, laid on the low walnut table with chewy, sweet, petal-pink rice cakes and fragrant jasmine tea. he brings her little treats and a mere book, and expects to earn her forgiveness with those trifling gifts.

but then, if he truly wanted her attention, why then the pressing telephone call that had to be placed that very moment, the abrupt departure, the foul words that mean exactly and precisely what she had surmised them to be. but who is he speaking with? some gloomy publicist? a lover?

hang up, she wants to snap. she wants to rise from her sitting position, kneeling stiffly on brittle knees, and cut the telephone wire in two. to yank the wire powering it, still sparking, from its socket. )

that's strange.

( she says, uninvited and loud enough for her hoarse voice to carry, eavesdropping blatantly, but he is the one who had spoken within her listening distance; if he wanted privacy he should have not answered at all. )

that's so amusing. ( but her shoulders do not tremble from laughter. there is no smile upon her thin, dry lips. ) to think you have any kind of command over someone else.
