haunting me

ghost love score —

You can't help who you fall in love with. But what if the person you fall for is no longer a person? Perhaps they were, once; those days have gone. All that's left is a memory. Is that something you can put to rest, or will you keep them with you and away from their final resting place?

  • Comment with your character and preferences. Mention if you'd prefer to play the living, the dead, or either.
  • Reply to others. You can use the RNG or not, if you'd wish. Make up your own additional prompts, scenes, scenarios, and such.

  • Dead Lover — No wonder they have unfinished business with you. You were theirs in life, and they're not about to let you go.
  • Tethered to You — In life, you didn't know each other, but now their ghost is connected to you, and you to them.
  • The Sight — You're the only one who can see them, the only one in the world to them, now.
  • Haunted Home — There's something wrong with your house. Can you reclaim it? Do you want to get rid of your companion?
  • Peace to the Vengeful — All you wanted to do was do a kind deed and help them achieve peace, not become eternally grateful.
  • Remember — Both of you are bound and determined to find out who you were as a living mortal. The knowledge might tear you apart.
  • Different Time, Different Place — This ghost is of a person who's a bit...antiquated compared to you. Careful, they may want to court you. It certainly makes things awkward when they see how you dress.
  • Jealousy — Lights burst, glass cracks, and the whole place goes cold when someone with a pulse smiles at you.
  • Protection — You'll risk your afterlife for the one you love.
  • Confession — If you can communicate vocally, confessions are easy. If you can't talk, that's a whole other kettle of fish.
  • The Challenge of Intimacy — Ghost makes it look so easy. You want to reach out and touch them, but you can't always do that.
  • Manifestation — Your emotions have temporarily given you a physical form.
  • Keeping You Here — The living's affection keeps the dead in the mortal coil.
  • Decay — The longer they stay with you, the more of a violent wraith, disconnected from their past, they become.
  • Passing — You have to let them go, even if they don't want to.
  • Just Like Heaven — You'll work together to find a way to bring you back to life.
  • ANYTHING ELSE?

[Benedict knelt down next to the body and gave it a brief examination. He wasn't all that interested in the physical aspects of the body, however, and soon delved into the next part of his investigation. With the abilities of his Companion, Benedict dove into the core essence of the deceased person--entering the realm of the mind like a living, breathing dream that he could traverse. The memories and emotions of the dead lingered for a while and with a bit of exploration he could find almost anything among them.

Even, sometimes, a ghost.

The more troubled the mind, however, the more likely there were to be demons roaming the dreamscapes. Fortunately, Benedict knew how to deal with such creatures. He'd done this before. He knew how to fight, how to move around the bizarre landscapes, how to solve the mysteries of the mind. But each was different. And sometimes the unexpected happened.

Like meeting a ghost that didn't quite...seem like a projection of a memory. It was almost more like he was talking to the person, trapped in their own mind, dreaming until they woke instead of being dead. Bizarre. But then he'd entered another realm, not one really meant for humans to consciously enter, of dreams and whims and demonic creatures from darker realms.

He'd figure it out.]

Well, this is new. [He said carefully as he peered at the image of the dead person--ironically named, he thought, as Greed--and wondered why this one seemed so different.] Saying I don't believe in ghosts seems a bit hypocritical of me so I'll go with the flow.

Why are you here? Do you know where you are?

[Two important questions, he thought, and maybe good ones to figure out if this 'ghost' knew about it's own demise or not. Maybe it was something else lingering... maybe it was a new type of Reflection demon.]

[He didn't remember the final seconds leading up to it, but he did remember the shot. How it rang in his ears; the way it felt like the air all around him had suddenly turned to glass and shattered. Someone (someone decidedly stupid) thought that the correct course of action to settle their debts was to shoot him when his back was turned. When he had no means of protecting himself, leaving it wide open for that single, seemingly sweet moment.]

[It was a cowardly move: a passion of desperation. And once it was over (once this was over), well.]

[Avarice wasn't exactly known to be a kind collections man, was it?]

[Still, he had been shot. Least the body he technically owned now had been shot. And with it, what little was left of his host's damned soul was gone, disappearing like shrapnel in the trenches. Greed groaned, his neck all but flopping under the pressure of his hand. In the purgatory of an empty vessel, the void was nothing but a humming black. Him (the true him anyway) pushed up against everything with a dull kind of pressure; the feel of it similar to a flood mounting on the backside of a door.]

[Eventually, that force would give way. Eventually, the gates would burst. But for now, the dam held. Holding, waiting, until nature finally gave way.]

[So when someone new showed up - to say he was surprised would be a great understatement.]

[The Sin's expression faltered stupidly on his face; the look on his borrowed host, almost unphased. It was a young one that he stole - long haired and boyish to a point. He could easily be mistaken for a college student or someone fresh on the worker's block. But when he spoke, it was all too clear that the pieces didn't quite fit.]

Ah-? [Greed peeled one of his eyes open.] I'm sorry, who are you, exactly? [He dropped his arm, letting it violently snap at his side.] Well, that would be pretty dumb, wouldn't it? There's no such thing as no such thing, after all - [He started, only to cut off halfway through. Something painful seemed to rip through him as sharp as a current. His teeth clenched, his muscles twitched and shuddered. The (in)between was never a pleasant experience. Because while a host could normally be mended up just fine, this one - well, their time was up. He had spent all that it had and gambled away what little remained. And at the end of the day, there was only so much, so little, mortals could give.]

[A sudden ricochet erupted out of him, making his spine dance and wriggle as erratically as a worm on a hook. For a split flash, his image doubled over: in one spot, the young man and in the other, someone different. A man a bit older, his sharp smile and towering demeanor static(ing) and whining like a computer glitch on reboot.]

Sorry - [Greed rolled his shoulders and pocketed his hands, allowing his back to settle as if the event had been nothing but a minor muscle spasm.] - this one doesn't have much time left. As for the other thing - [Numbly, he tested his lower lip with his teeth.] - I can take a guess. You found this one outside, right?

[The Sin tapped his foot against a floor that didn't really exist, testing it.] Now, though, that's an interesting trick. [He clicked his tongue and a flicker of red fizzled off inside his cheek.] Y'know, it's pretty rare for a human to see me like this. Gotta say, you're pretty impressive, friend.

[Another hiccup gripped him and as he turned, his shoulders rattled away; their shape turned jagged and sharp like needles or rocks.] So, let me ask you again - [He pointed to Benedict from his hip, his fingers and thumb cocked like a revolver.] - who are you, chief? And just how did you end up here?

[Well that was...disturbing. Benedict was starting to get the picture that this being was not the original occupant of this body, was not human at all. So he wondered if a demon had taken possession. It seemed to haunt the mind, but did it do more than simply feast off the emotions of its host? It was not quite like other demons Benedict had crossed paths with so far and he did not yet know. His Companion offered little insight.

"It is as you suspect... but it, he, is hard to read."

Which Benedict took to mean the Companion agreed with him but had no further insight to give. So, something from a realm beyond that which even the Companion understood? He got a quiet "possibly" out of his Companion but nothing more. How...bizarre. It was rare that the Companion ever felt unease from another being but not entirely unprecedented. It made Benedict curious, and cautious.

He stayed well back from the apparition as he listened to it prattle along. It confirmed their suspicions and Benedict's eyebrows raised in curious reaction. He relaxed though continued to keep his distance. His hand wasn't near his gun, but it wasn't not near it either.]

I was investigating the decedent when I came here.

[Benedict wasn't certain how much the other being was cognizant of the supernatural. Rather than call attention to the Companion, he pretended to simply be one person rather than two beings: a human hosting an Eldritch Being as a special guest to this realm.]

My name is Benedict. And I'm still curious of the same for you.

[What are you strange being and why are you here?]

[The Sin turned away; his faltered expression vacant and vague. Again, he tested his teeth with the tip of his tongue.] Decedent? Oh, you mean this guy? [Playfully, he yanked at the corner of his collar, making the stiff fabric grow tight at the back of his neck.] Yeah, bit of a waste if you ask me. Not that this one had much left, but killing him - [A hint of something teased in his eyes. A brief flicker of violence, catching like fire to a wick.] - it isn't going to make much of a difference. Not exactly a smart move.

[Greed slapped his foot down and the floor cracked back. A single sound, as empty and haunted as an old, abandoned church.] Benedict, huh. [He repeated, his mouth seemingly tasting the name.] Well, Benedict - seems like you and I should learn to become good friends given the circumstances. First thing's first, though -

[Another spasm climbed up his neck, though it was more subtle than the last. Where his shoulders had been a ricochet, the veins along his throat simply wriggled. They bulged underneath his skin like a nest of uncoiling snakes; each twitch, jarring and sick.] I made a promise. Hope you understand. [While he spoke, his borrowed body slowly began to disintegrate. Piece by piece, fleck by fleck, he fell apart; the shifting of him as smooth and scaling as ash in a breeze.] Besides, I think it's better to be honest with each other, right? No point using this face when we've only just met.

[Another part of him crumbled; an arm turned to dust. Yet, despite it all, there he was, smiling. Smiling and tense - the echo of himself, gradually filling the space. The Sin puckered his lip.] Just hold that thought.

[And with that, the last of him sloshed away. A hand, an arm, his grin: it all collapsed in a billow of ash; the rush of him fuming forward like the backside of a windstorm. All the while, the devil's laughter roared into the emptiness left behind. Soot, sulfur, sweet, raw metal: they flooded in on the whiplash, hard and fast. Like a hole had just been ripped open and all of him, oh all of him, was coming, coming, coming - ]

Ha - ! Sorry, that was rude of me. Things like this tend to get a little bit messy. Can't really be helped. [Greed slurred. His presence was a sheer vibration of sorts. It strummed through the void like a guitar-string's rattle; a hollow sound strumming, plucking, as if it were trying to find itself.]

[When the ash reformed again, it was the shadow, the one of teeth and sharper points, that remained.]

[Greed tested his shoulder as a collar of fur slowly pieced itself together out of the fallout.]
Ah - that always does hurt a bit. [He started as he rolled his head from side to side. One snap seemed to do the trick, and the Sin let out a simmering, snake-purr hiss.] Now, where were we? Right - [He snapped his thumb, making a pair of sunglasses appear between his fingers.]

The name's Greed. It's a pleasure.

[Benedict didn't like the way this man spoke. Smooth and slick like a greased eel, like a sharper ready to play their mark for all their worth. Like he wanted something and was ready to take it whatever the price. Benedict didn't really like being swindled, or controlled, and had rebelled once or thrice in his day to get away from such things.

That was nothing compared to what happened next, however. The detective backed away as he watched the man fade away into a flurry of ash that eventually exploded into a blizzard carried away into the void. He felt rather than saw the Companion shrink in upon him, roils of ink and tentacles condensing into a smaller space as if trying to hide from the expanded entity that now filled the void. A low rumble of displeasure rolled around in his head indicating the Companion's discomfort. The Companion didn't like sharing the space, and Benedict got the vague impression that the Companion didn't like sharing him either.

Benedict lowered his arms as the ash reformed into something resembling a human again. He had reacted out of instinct, raised them slightly in defense, ready to call upon the power that hummed just within reach beneath the surface. The Companion's abilities to shield and aid him in battle. But it didn't appear to be needed any here and now.

Despite this, the Companion remained close to Benedict. Usually the Entity expanded to fill the rooms surrounding Benedict, to reach out and touch everything around It, to drink the emotions and memories left behind and generate an awareness that no mortal being ever could perceive with their limited scope. Now It remained protectively close, possessively so, billowing like a tightly packed thunderstorm near It's host, Benedict, and staring unblinkingly at this other entity with an uneven number of too many eyes.

Greed, the man says and it explains absolutely nothing and everything at the same time. An annoyed pulse follows from the Companion. Benedict isn't quite sure what to make of all this.]

...I reserve judgement for the time being. I have a lot of questions. You gave me a name, but failed to answer my initial question otherwise. And now I just have more to add.

What in the hell are you?

[One of his eyes slowly peeled open; the weight of it, a reptile's cool intrigue. The Sin's jaw tightened and as his lips puckered into a sweet-nothing expression, his teeth idly chased each other - their soft grind savoring and taking in the sight with a cruel kind of relish.]

Oh - ? Now, who might you be? [He purred the words, letting them snap off his tongue like tight piano wire. Because now, oh now, he could see it. That thunder cloud; that tight blackness that seemed to collapse and hug every square inch of Benedict like an amorphous leech. He watched, with pin-pricked attention, how it gripped its host, the way it sunk in and filled the gaps as thick as gas under pressure. And where it had no teeth to bare (least not yet, he reminded himself), its eyes told enough of the story. A silent warning in a sea of unblinking eyes:]

["Don't even think about it," it seemed to say. "This one's mine."]

Sorry, I didn't realize we had more company.[Greed hummed and his fingers spread across his sunglasses. One push, and he shoved them over his eyes.] I'm sure you do have a lot of questions, don't you? Always did like a man who knew exactly what he wanted. Fine, let's get right to it then, hmn? [With a sluggish step forward, the Sin's body lazily slouched, forcing something in his neck to pop just slightly out of place before falling in line again.]

You seem like a smart guy, Benedict. So, I'll skip the details. [While he spoke, he felt the inside of his mouth with his tongue; as if he was reacquainting himself with it after some time apart.] Mortals have a lot of names for me: corruption, abomination, demon, devil, sin. [He slipped his thumbs into his belt loops to drum his nails on his thighs. Rck, rck, rck.] I suppose those are the easiest words to use for me. But I've always been here. Peoples' wants, their needs, their desires - I'm the living embodiment of it.

[Greed paused short of Benedict and his shadow; enough of a distance to be overtly cautious, but close enough to breathe it in. He couldn't help it. His core, his true core (the one that screamed deaf, that surged, scratched, hungered, and craved), demanded it. It compelled his every move, every touch, every want. Whatever Benedict and his unfamiliar companion were, there was an energy there that hooked him. A proverbial drop of blood in the sea and Lord, Heaven, could he not help but track it down.]

[Greed sighed out and a whisper of graying steam teased under his nose, fogging his sunglasses to a sick, milky white.]

Now that I've told you mine, I think it's only fair you do the same, right? [He started, that vicious bite to his words coming right on back.] And don't think I'm leaving you out, friend. I know you aren't Pride. [Lifting his chin, the Sin looked beyond Benedict.]

Unless, of course, my good ol'older brother has finally gained some fucking sense after all these years.
