Roll for initiative
![]() Lucky you. For a while, you get to eschew a normal life and see life past your door; you're going on a quest! It could be for personal reasons, for fun, for profit, or to save the world as you know it. In all likelihood, it's the latter, given the natural order of things, but hopefully it's not. Whatever the case may be, you won't be going it alone, however. Whether it's just you and a partner or a true fellowship, you've got people to back you up. You may not all start out as the best of friends, that's true - still, the fires of potential life or death scenarios or the threat of losing your booty draw you closer together, and a friendship forms. With one member of your party, more than friendship grows between you. But wait, you have to defeat the dark lord, find the oldest wand, fight evil by moonlight, create a giant robot, or any other number of tasks. There's no time for this sort of nonsense! Actually, you may push them away because of the mission or due to past wounds that tie into said mission. Maybe, though, you can steal moments to get closer, let a romance blossom...or more. would you like to do some botwverse for this or an au??? tbh i was thinking maybe zelda can still use some of her hylia powers that's left over to fight monsters with link to clear out camps. snipe with her bow of light.]
no subject
I'd be down for some in universe stuff. Maybe they're off figuring out what work needs to be done to start rebuilding while doing some heroics on the side. Light-mage Zelda sounds great.]
no subject
yeah i like it! zelda would def want to get to work on what she missed in 100 years. i can work on a starter in a little bit but feel free to throw something my way if you have an idea!]
no subject
But yeah that sounds good. I'm actually (supposed to be) working right now so I can't really whip up a starter at the moment so feel free to if you've got something in mind.]
no subject
oh oop! lmao ok np! i'll work on it rn ✨💪]
here you go! change or add anything you'd like ofc
speaking of. the bow of light isn't physically heavy in her hands but, at times, it feels strange there as well. something comes over her when she draws the string back and an arrow of pure energy forms between her fingers, not unlike when Hylia's blessing fills her vessel and banishes the malice.
what's left of it within her, that is. a trickle now compared to the bottomless well of energy it had been when she first unlocked it. Zelda slings the glowing weapon back over her shoulder and pulls out the more familiar Sheikah Slate, taken from Link almost immediately when they were on the road and she was in her boots and pants. she brings up the map.]
You said there were some monster camps along this river, correct? With Calamity Ganon gone for good and no Blood Moon to revive them, the roads should be much safer once you take them out.
[you, she says. unused to including herself in Link's battles as much as she is fighting with him.]
Looks good to me!
[It was almost unexpected how easy that familiarity came back. He still doesn't remember much of the old kingdom except for the few memories that had returned over his journey. But he does remember that feeling.
Somehow though, even after his travels and the battle against Calamity Ganon, it feels like the real work had only just begun. Today's trip is part of that, clearing out monster camps along the roads to make travel between the still-standing towns easier and safer.]
Some smaller ones. Mostly bokoblins and maybe a moblin or two to deal with. [He looks her way at the slip but lets it slide. He's still hesitant about her joining the fight, even if he can't deny the power that bow has in her hands.] It shouldn't be anything I can't handle.
[Maybe it's not too late. Maybe if he rolls with it she'll stay back and let him handle the fighting.]
it was fun asuna was sooo tsun lmao and yes! actually! idk when i can get to it but i'd love to
did Link? probably not the time to think about what sort of things her knight preferred now as opposed to the past. especially when she's not even sure how much of it he remembers. if he wants to remember. Zelda does and the emptiness never went away.
her grip tightens on the slate but she nods. yes, she had watched him take out much more challenging enemies. many a time. multiple Lynels at once, for example. that had been terrifying and incredible both to witness.]
A light exercise for you, I imagine. Such as a brisk walk in the morning. [she tries for levity in their fumbling relationship that she can't put a name to and can't make sense of. nor have they tried. he remembered her and that had to be enough.
a sharp exhale leaves her mouth and she gives the slate a little shake.]
Alright. Moblins are far larger targets so I should aim for those instead of the bokoblins. If I preoccupy them, they will be even easier for you to dispose of because they'll be distracted with finding out who is shooting them. And I'll be sure to stay out of sight, behind rocks like you used to tell me while you ran off to get covered in monster guts.
No rush! The offer is there!
Even if Sidon had laughingly said he'd give Link even odds against any army when it came up.
An opinion it seems Zelda shares too. At her joke he turns to her and... smiles. With a light chuckle even.]
Maybe, but that's still a good plan. [As they come up on a hill he steps ahead of her and holds an arm out to signal her to wait.] The first one should be just past this hill, I'll go and take a look before we move. It should be a small camp but... well, you know what they say about assuming.
[He asked the princess.]
i appreciate it ;u; !!
on the other hand, Zelda stares unapologetically at his smile. that... is new. rather he hadn't smiled nearly as often, as readily, before. which is a shame, really. it's lovely. even his chuckle is--
oooh, this isn't good. she's a stupid princess. think about the matter at hand, Zelda. monster camps! keeping a steady aim. breathe out as you release the arrow. it's not like Link ever got dopey about any of her smiles. (or so she thinks)
and yet, immediately, her lips curve up as she feels a warmth settle in her belly when she's praised. when he praises her. though it drops as quickly when he puts an arm out. obedient but mooooostly trusting in his judgment, she waits behind that arm while gripping her bow more tightly.
what they say about assuming? it's bad to assume until finding out the truth? maybe this is a saying she missed in the castle and was common amongst the barracks.]
No. [too curious now.] What do they say?
[please tell the princess about asses, Link.]
Oof sorry. 14 hour shift at work yesterday cooked my brain.
[Whether he does or doesn't, he doesn't see the point in arguing with the girl who shoved Calamity Ganon's face in the dirt and held it there for a century.
He'd never actually asked what that was like, now that he thinks about it. He'd wondered but never really found the right time to ask. He's had chances but couldn't really bring himself to for fear of bringing back bad memories when she seems so happy.
More than once he'd sat and simply watched her smile at the wind in her hair again, or the sun on her face, or....
Monster camps, Link. Stay focused. You don't see Zelda daydreaming about how he smiles.]
Right. So I'll-- uh. [And it's about then he realizes what he just did and freezes up, looking at Zelda like a deer in the Master Cycle's headlights.] Well, it's... um....
[Oh, what does he do? It's not even close to the rudest thing he's head among travelers and probably not even close to anything he'd heard among the Knights a century ago but. Well, she's a princess for Farore's sake, he's can't just--]
It's nothing. Just an expression. [He hesitates, reaching up to rub at the back of his neck and clears his throat awkwardly. Way more awkwardly than a Hero of Legend probably should.] It's... not really polite though?
[But Impa will KILL HIM.]
dw! make sure u rest and drink water,,,, #TOTK6DAYS
a brow raises an inch at him before she puts her fists at her hips.]
And you think that the princess wouldn't like such language. I'll have you know I can curse. If I wanted to. [she doesn't know any GOOD curses, though. people tended to keep their language pristine around the princess and king. Link can't be blamed for being hesitant. she'll just have to prove it's fine. they can be comfortable around each other, tell each other things. like asking what it was like to make Ganon her bitch for 100 years.
hmm.]
What's the damn expression, Link?
[see!! hah.]
It's definitely been a Major Test of Patience. Can't believe it's been four years since the teaser.
When Zelda plants her fists on her hips and gives him that look he actually leans back an inch or two. Well, okay, it's not like she's going to break like glass because of words but still. He should have kept his mouth shut, and he can't shake the feeling of more than one pairs of eyes glaring at him from the next life.
Where's a Lynel when you need one?]
Uh. [Then she goes ahead and says that and his jaw hangs open for a second. The wind whistles by, rustling the grass. Link stands, staring at Zelda with her hands on her hips and indignant expression on her face as she belts out the most polite-sounding curse he's ever heard.
He's not certain how, but she made that cute.]
Okay. Okay. [A second ticks by before a grin spreads across his face again, followed by another chuckle. Quickly, he holds his hands up and waves them a little in surrender.] Well... the saying goes that when you assume it, uh. It makes an ass of "you" and "me."
[That's clear enough, right?]
ikr?? it's gonna be another major test staying away from social media while i play the game lmao
his silence makes her a bit self-conscious. as it had done once upon a time. what, had she used it wrong? she's sure she didn't.
Zelda only relaxes when he gives in, when he grins, when he chuckles again. and she feels better accomplished that she's managed to get him relax, too. within that once upon a time, they had been friends. they are, still, she thinks. but they had an understanding of one another, so deep and soul bound, that she didn't have with others. so maybe friend isn't the right word, either.
this is what she means by fumbling and unable to make sense of their relationship. all Zelda knows is how SHE feels. it's a lot of feels.]
Ass of you and me... [give her a second.] Oh, I see! It's a play on the word itself! That's not so impolite. It's quite clever actually. I was expecting it to be much worse. So, if we assume it's a small camp we'll be made asses of is what you were saying?
I couldn't get BOTW on release so I'd already seen some playthroughs. This one will be all new
Zelda isn't the only one relieved, now he can at least cross language off his list of things to worry about.
Truthfully, it isn't much less fumbling and uncertain for him. He only have a handful of memories of their time together and half of those are of their apparently rocky start. He knows how he felt in those but now?
Well, he doesn't feel the same crushing burden anymore. Although he still has the same sense of duty, especially toward her. And that's how it started: duty.
But the more time he spends with her the more he enjoys it, duty or not. Whatever his role is in regards to her, he's just happy to be nearby. Now he just has to figure out how to navigate that.
His grin stays in place while she turns the expression over in her mind. Always analyzing everything.]
Sort of. If it's a small camp we're just right, [He shrugs] but yes if it ends up being a bigger camp then we'll be asses.
!!! that's exciting. i drove to like 4 stores before i found my botw copy on release day
but for as long as he wants to remain at her side, she'll selfishly take him. happy he wants to be nearby at all.]
Small camp we're just right, bigger camp we're asses. I think I'd rather not be an ass, then. [Zelda repeats it with another nod. her lips quirk up in a grin of her own that she aims back at him. hearing Link speak was one thing. hearing Link curse?] You're always teaching me something new about subjects I've never considered before. Where does that saying come from?
Only one here but it was three weeks late! So....
Now you're getting the idea. Don't be an ass. [Well, that got comfortable quickly enough.] I'm not really sure. I think I heard it around--
[He stops suddenly, blinking at something over Zelda's shoulder before his eyes go wide and he quickly reaches out, gently taking her arm and urging her to a cluster of boulders off the side of his road. His voice drops, quiet but still urgent all the same.]
Off the road. Quickly. Take cover.
[Because it hasn't noticed them yet, but a Lynel has just wandered far too close to Hateno village for comfort.]
[OOC: Don't sweat it. Otherwise you'll end up like me and only realize you goofed up some html three comments later.]
dang they do be slackin
Link has never grabbed at her for no reason. she chances a look over her shoulder at the last moment before ducking into cover behind one of those rocks. what she sees causes her eyes to go wide, too. a Lynel! this close to town?! why... ?
did this already make them asses? all the comfortable frivolity disappears in an instant. it's just one Lynel. Link could easily dispatch it. but she doesn't WANT to just sit back here and wait for that.
her bow is pulled off her shoulder. she's not a child, anymore, she said. her voice lowers as she levels a serious, determined stare at her knight.]
Okay. What should I do? And do not tell me to only stay in cover. I have to do something, Link.
Nah. It was my fault for being broke.
Just one, he can handle one, but he doesn't have the same estimation of "easy" as Zelda does. They're still dangerous and even as good as he is one slip is all it takes with the beasts.
Still, he doesn't have any choice. He's already reaching back for his sword when Zelda speaks up and he looks back at her, matching that same determined stare with his own. The easygoing levity in his eyes and expression replaced by the sharp, lethal intent that takes over when he's ready for a fight. This is a much bigger fight than he had planned for today and as he looks at her there's something else in his eyes.
Fear?]
Stay in cover. [He quickly holds up a hand to ward off the argument. There's no time for it. He doesn't want to think of what will happen if that thing reaches the village.] If you have a shot, take it but don't let it see you. I'll do my best to keep it busy but if it gets a second it will shoot back at you and it is dangerous from that far away.
I-- [He pauses, clenches his jaw and then his voice goes quieter, softer.] I don't want you to get hurt.
but now we aren't and HAPPY TOTK DAY!!
Link...
[her fingers curl tighter around her bow. there is a sudden, inexplicable urge to reach forward and wrap her arms around him. to hold and protect him. it's so strong she feels Hylia swell in her chest and ring in her ears as it had when a Guardian zeroed its sights on a staggered, exhausted Link who couldn't lift his sword. like she had never spoken at length about her imprisonment with Ganon for 100 years, they had not touched the reality that she's all he has left -- no, that's conceited. she isn't all he has. Zelda has seen first-hand what Link had built for himself. the relationships he fostered with the people.
but they had done much to save the other.
a knight of Hyrule would not want to see his princess hurt, anyway. that's his duty.]
Okay. [Zelda breathes out the word before placing a hand on one of his so that, when he looks up at her, he can see that she's giving him a soft smile. one of understanding.] I trust you. I'll remain in cover as you say. Just... be careful. I know it's one Lynel but the fact remains it's a Lynel, not a Bokoblin or even a Moblin. I suppose this makes us incredible asses, doesn't it?
