YAY we're miserable.
![]() Consider: a world where most everything is the same as it ever was, yet there's one downside: soulmates are real, and you will find yours. How could that ever be terrible, you ask? Why, we forgot to mention the other little snag...touching your soulmate brings you excruciating pain. Everyone else in your life you can touch no problem, except for them. You know you'll find the one when you hurt. How does knowing that the person you're destined to be with is the only person you can't touch? Will you avoid contact with anyone so you'll never know and be the "safer" (yet unfulfilled) for it? If you do find that other half, how will you ever show your affection for each other? Sex has to be out of the question entirely, right? In a life worth living, there's always going to be a little bit of pain. Once it's all said and done, a life with someone is going to make you earn your happiness. r u l e s: one ▍ comment with your character, their info, prefs, etc. |

Happy to do a twist where characters realize they're not Soulmates because there's no pain when they expect it! Or platonic Soulmates.

God he missed California. With her vibrant sunsets and ocean waves that caressed your skin like a lover beckoning you back to bed.
Billy downs another red cup of some liquid that makes his head buzz as he makes his way through the throng of people that were "dancing" to the music.
He takes in the costumes, and glares over at the guy that's been introduced as the King of Hawkins High. What was that bastard's name? Harrington. The blond is about to head to the kitchen when he spots an absolutely unfamiliar face that seems to be coming towards him. What was his costume, a newspaper photographer or something? A pervert with a camera? They were all in high school, so the latter was possible. Abandoning his cup to the mass of people making room for him, Billy instead pulls out a cigarette to light up as he watches this guy that looks hella out of place here in Tina's house.

He doesn't want to be here, and he keeps himself tightly to himself, hands in the pockets of his jacket. Jonathan hasn't put on a costume in a few years now, and if someone wants to decide that he's dressed as someone from a movie or the most mundane costume possible, he'd just let them think that. This place is dull to him even as chaotic as it is, no color to be glimpsed from any of these people that have no connection to him, and no desire to make one. He ends up making his way closer to a corner to be a wallflower instead and stick it out as long as he can while Nancy, he can see from here, is going back for a cup of whatever is in the punch bowl even though he can tell that Steve is less than thrilled about it. But that's none of his business. They could have their fights and leave him out of it.
He's being stared at. He knows he's being stared at. He gets stared at a lot. So now Billy will find himself fixed with a narrow-eyed almost glare, Jonathan's expression pinched and sour.

He pauses when the other guy makes eye contact with him, but it's a challenging look. A sort of 'come mess with me if you dare' sort of vibe he's getting. Billy doesn't fucking like it, doesn't like being challenged like this, even if the other isn't stating it outright.
At least when he goes over, Tommy and Co. aren't following him. Some of the girls whisper excitedly behind hands before turning their gaze elsewhere - they don't want to attract the Byers guy's attention.
"This party isn't meant for wallflowers," he scoffs, flicking ash off of his cigarette before taking another draw from it. Smoke comes out from his nose like a dragon, watching over this weird looking kid. "Looks like you don't even wanna be here. Not even in a fucking costume."
There's one more last pull from the cigarette before the blond throws it down onto the floor and snuffs it out with the toe of his boots. His earring flashes in the light and the looks back at the stranger. "Get a drink, maybe you'll look like you might be having a decent time and loosen up."

Which is most people, honestly.
Jonathan is briefly too busy ignoring the whispered gossiping that follows Billy through the crowd to realize that the guy is coming straight for him, right up until the moment that he's facing the taller boy and trying not to breathe the smoke that drifts out of his mouth.
"What do you care?" he murmurs, nearly quiet enough to be completely lost in the music and chatter around them. His look sours further when the cigarette is dropped right on the floor. He may not like Tina, but that was incredibly uncalled for. He could already see the anger on his mother's face over that kind of bullshit. "If you're gonna do that at least go outside." He shoulders his way past Billy as he says it with the intention of getting out in the air himself.

"I can tell when someone doesn't belong," he notes outloud, making sure to be heard over the din of noise that was music and people surrounding them. And then the guy is pushing past him but damn if Billy isn't intrigued. Why would someone like that be a party like this? That was the kind of kid that got beat up for making a funny expression on his face at the wrong person.
He smirks, turns on heel, and follows after. Once outside, another cigarette gets fished out and lit to have the butt of it crunched between his teeth. "Didn't realize I'd come to a party and piss off housekeeping. Make you feel better now that I'm outside?" A stream of smoke comes from his nose, then mouth as he breathes it out, like a dragon, while he watches the weird kid

Being followed rather than dismissed outright puts him right on edge. He really shouldn't be surprised when someone follows him looking for an easy target. He's smaller than he looks, quiet and unwilling to actually cause problems, and it makes him a prime candidate for those people that want a punching bag for a night.
His mother had once said that it might happen a little less if he tried to smile a little more. He hadn't wanted to say it at the time, but he doesn't have a lot to smile about.
His lips press into a thin line, and in spite of everything in him demanding that he just walk away and not rise to the obvious bait, he turns. "Maybe I feel better that you're not actively messing up someone's house, yeah. Maybe things are different out in California but here it's considered pretty rude to just burn a hole in someone's carpet."

These are the kinds of guys that people like Tommy expected Billy to chew up and spit out. To make them tuck their tail and run in shame.
“I feel like it’s worse to show up to a party you don’t want to be at, hugging that wall like a lifeline.
This time he purposely blows the smoke towards Jonathan. He hears something at the windows and chances a look back. Less people peering at them - they must be getting lost in their cups and in the music to be bothered with the two outside. He sucks in some more of the smoke and blows it upward this time.
“Why the fuck are you here when you don’t want to be? You look like there’s better shit for you to be doing than trying to blend in at a costume party without a fucking costume.”
